Chapter 143 : Unruly Light
Chapter 143 : Unruly Light
ELIAS’ POV
I stood in the middle of our private sitting room with our son cradled against my chest. The baby had just finished feeding and now stared up at me with wide, trusting eyes. Kai sat nearby sharpening a blade, the steady scrape of stone on steel filling the quiet space. Everything felt normal until it did not.
A sudden surge rushed through my veins like liquid fire. The white wolf inside me roared to the surface without warning. Bright light flared from my skin. I gasped and stumbled backward. The baby let out a sharp cry as power crackled around us. I fought to push it down, but the energy pushed back harder. My arms trembled. For one terrifying second I felt the urge to shift right there, to release the massive wolf form that could crush furniture and endanger everything in the room.
I turned quickly and placed our son in the cradle, hands shaking so badly I nearly dropped him. Light continued to pulse from my palms. Kai dropped the blade and crossed the room in two strides.
“Elias, what is happening?” he asked.
I clenched my fists and backed away from the cradle. The light intensified. A chair near the window lifted off the floor and slammed against the wall. Wood cracked. I stared at it, horrified. “I do not know. It comes on its own. Stay back.”
The power spiked again. I dropped to my knees and pressed my hands to the floor. Energy poured out of me in waves. The rug beneath my palms singed. Smoke rose in thin curls. I growled through gritted teeth, trying to force the white wolf back into its place. My vision sharpened to unnatural clarity. I saw every thread in the fabric, every speck of dust in the air.
Kai knelt a few feet away but did not touch me. “Breathe through it. You have done this before.”
I shook my head. Sweat ran down my face. “This feels different and stronger. What if I hurt him?” My gaze flicked to the cradle. The baby fussed louder now. The sound tore at me.
The surge finally ebbed. The light faded from my hands. I sat back on my heels, chest heaving. The room smelled of burned fabric. A large scorch mark stained the floor where my palms had rested. I looked at Kai, throat tight. “That was not me. Not fully. Something took over.”
Kai helped me stand. His grip stayed firm on my arms. “You controlled it. He is safe.”
I pulled away and walked to the cradle. Our son had settled again, but his small face remained red from crying. I reached out, then stopped. My hands still felt too warm. “What if next time I cannot stop it? What if the power lashes out while I hold him?”
Kai moved behind me and rested a hand on my shoulder. “We will find a way to steady it. The ancient blood in you grows with every day. It needs training, not fear.”
I wanted to believe him. Instead I stepped back and paced the room. Another small burst hit me without warning. This time no light showed, but strength flooded my muscles. I grabbed the edge of the heavy wooden table with one hand and flipped it over easily. Dishes that had been set for a meal crashed to the floor. The noise echoed loudly. I stared at the overturned table, stunned.
“I did not mean to do that,” I whispered.
Kai looked from the table to me. “You were pacing and then you moved faster than I could track.”
I ran my fingers through my hair. My heart raced. “I do not remember deciding to touch it. One moment I walked, the next the table flew. This power wants out. It pushes against my skin constantly now.”
A knock sounded at the door. One of the maids called through the wood, voice hesitant. “Is everything alright? We heard a crash.”
Kai answered quickly. “A minor accident. Leave it for now.” He waited until her footsteps retreated before he turned back to me. “We cannot hide this forever. The pack will notice if things keep breaking.”
I righted the table with ease, muscles still humming with leftover power. Shame burned in my chest. I had always carried the white wolf with pride. Now it felt like a wild animal chained inside me, ready to break free and destroy what I loved most.
Later, while Kai stepped into the bathing room to wash his hands, another wave struck. I stood near the window gazing outside when the power exploded outward. Light burst from my entire body. The glass panes rattled violently. One cracked straight down the middle. I tried to pull the energy back, but it fought me. My hands glowed so brightly I had to squint. The white wolf howled inside my mind, demanding release.
I dropped to the floor and curled inward, arms wrapped around my knees. “Stop,” I hissed through clenched teeth. “You will not harm them.”
Kai rushed back into the room. Water dripped from his hands. He crouched beside me without hesitation this time and placed both palms on my shoulders. “Elias, look at me. Focus on my voice.”
I lifted my head. The light reflected in his eyes. “I saw myself hurting you in my mind just now. The wolf did not care. It wanted to run free through the halls. What if it takes over completely?”
The surge faded slowly. I uncurled and sat with my back against the wall. Exhaustion weighed on me. Kai sat beside me, shoulder pressed to mine.
“Tell me what you feel,” he said quietly.
I rubbed my face with both hands. “It builds like pressure in my chest. Then it bursts out. I lose seconds or minutes. I do things without choosing them. When it passes I stand in the mess and cannot remember the exact moment it started. I am scared, Kai. Scared I will wake up one day and find I have wounded our son or you. The white wolf has always been part of me, but now it feels like something separate. Something dangerous.”
Kai stayed silent for a long moment. He reached over and took my hand, threading our fingers together. “You carried our child. You fought through recovery and then rode out to save my sister while still healing. That power saved lives. It protected us. We will teach it control the same way we teach our son to walk. One step at a time.”
I squeezed his hand. “What if control never comes? What if I become the threat inside our own walls?”
He turned to face me fully. “Then we face it together. You are not alone with this. I see the fear in you, but I also see the man who refuses to let it win. The same man who kicked down a door and fought two enemies while barely recovered. We train. We find elders who know about ancient lines. We keep the baby safe in the meantime.”
I leaned my head against his shoulder. The contact helped settle the restless energy inside me. “I flipped the table without thinking. I nearly cracked the window. These small things scare me more than any battle because they happen here, where our son sleeps.”
Kai wrapped an arm around me. “We will reinforce the room if we must. We create space for you to release the power safely outside the walls. But you do not hide it from me. No more pretending everything stays fine until something breaks.”
I nodded against him. Another small flicker of light danced across my knuckles, but this time I breathed through it and the light dimmed. Not gone, but quieter.
“I do not want to be the reason our family falls apart,” I said.
Kai pressed a kiss to the top of my head. “You are the reason we stay together. The power is part of you, and we will master it. I promise you that.”
