Chapter 81
Iris
"Hey," He said calmly and lowered himself onto the chair beside me.
I scoffed, staring at him in disbelief. Seeing how easy it was for him to throw a greeting and casually sit with me, acting like we were friends after everything he had done was appalling, but I put a lid on my simmering temper and forced out a thin smile.
"What are you doing here, Devin?" My voice was colder than expected but I liked it.
He folded his arms, acting aloof. "I came to pay my last respect to the Alpha. Heard he was buried yesterday," He replied nonchalantly.
"Oh, what changed? I thought you were his errand boy," I teased him.
"I realized how stupid I was to have his back before he died and that's why I didn't waste a second in moving over to the Red Sea pack to rule them. And trust me when I say that my life is quite better over there,"
The way the twins talked about their father was alarming. I was sure he'd be rolling in his grave right now, but I couldn't deny that he deserved it.
"That's good to know, but when I asked what you were doing here, I wanted to know why you came to me. The last time I checked, you wanted me out of your brother's life because I was worthless or have you suddenly lost your memory?" I spat with bitterness echoing loudly in my tone.
His shoulders slumped and he dropped his arms and stared at me. "I came to say that I'm sorry for everything that happened in the past. My actions were childish and motivated by deep resentment for my father, the only mistake I made was transferring my aggression to the wrong people."
I clicked my tongue and cussed under my breath. "Why does everyone think that sorry fixes everything?"
He moved away from the backrest. "What do you mean?"
"I'll explain it to you," I got to my feet. "Y'all think that you can go around hurting and bringing shame to innocent and weak people, after a while you realize that what you did was wrong and then you throw a five-letter word of apology to us like that will erase the years of sadness and agony we had to endure," My voice was rising with each word that left my mouth but it didn't matter.
At least my heart felt lighter and they got to know that I was no longer that weakling they could intimidate.
"But I'm truly sorry, Iris-"
I raised my hand sharply and cocked my head to the side. "I don't want to hear my name from your lips and your apology isn't needed. My life is good without you and don't you ever talk to me again." I dished out a warning.
The calmness I'd earlier experienced had gone into thin air with Devin's visit, coupled with his face that reminded me of his brother who I wanted to be away from so I stormed off.
I had no direction in mind, but anywhere was good as long as it wasn't this pack house.
Tears had gathered in my eyes, but I wasn't willing to let them fall. None of them or any other person who hurt me throughout my entire existence was worth my tears.
And then a crazy idea struck me. I hadn't shifted before and I didn't know how it felt, but I could try. While walking aimlessly after leaving the pack house, I found the opening that led to the woods where Gradel and I had gone for a run.
"Let's go for a run, Irene. What do you think?" I smirked, giddy with excitement.
