Chapter 45
Iris
Songs blared from the speaker as Hazel and I made our way into the club. If someone had told me that I'd be here tonight, I would have accused the person of lying, but here I was, ready to party and get drunk.
After witnessing such a heart-wrenching scene, I rushed down to Hazel's house. Thankfully, her parents weren't home so I informed her that I'd changed my mind.
Just like I hoped, she didn't ask any questions even though she kept throwing interrogative glances at me at intervals. We were almost the same size, so it wasn't hard to fit into the slutty body-con dress she'd laid out for me to wear.
I tucked my hair underneath a blonde wig and she helped conceal my face with a smoky makeover. It wasn't enough to hide my identity, but no one would realize I was the one at a glance.
We navigated through the sweaty bodies and stopped at the counter. I took a cursory glance around, surprised at how jammed the club was during this time.
"Have you ever been here before?" I yelled as the song from the speaker overshadowed my voice.
"Yes. Are you surprised? This is how we have fun here," She replied and trained her attention on the cute bartender who was mixing some drinks for the customers beside us.
My skin crawled at the thought of dancing with strangers. Though Gradel had broken my heart into pieces, I didn't see myself being comfortable with someone else and it annoyed me.
He shouldn't wield such control over me when I didn't have the same over him.
A tap on my exposed thigh disrupted my thoughts and brought me back to reality. "What do you want to have?" She questioned.
"Anything you're having," I shrugged.
Taking alcohol was foreign to me because I couldn't afford it when I lived with my sister, and now that my position had been elevated, I didn't just see the need to consume such a bitter and intoxicating drink.
She nodded and spoke to the bartender about our orders. My eyes darted to the side and I saw a man, leering at my chest.
I fixed a deep scowl at him and he looked away while I pushed up the neckline of my dress. For a moment, I regretted wearing the skimpy dress.
My hand went to the necklace which sat between my breasts and I contemplated removing it because of the unwanted attention it brought to me. And then, I stretched the hem of my dress as the exposure of my thighs made me uncomfortable.
"You have to quit acting like a child, Iris. No one knows that it's you," She scolded me and handed over the shot glass to me.
I collected and hesitated for a moment.
"Drink it," She urged me. "It will aid our mission to dance like our life depends on it." She smirked.
I rolled my eyes and doused the glass, frowning at the bitter taste and the burning sensation in my chest. Upon confirming my hatred for alcohol, I decided that I wouldn't take another glass.
At that point, Gradel's warning resonated in my mind. He'd told me that they could take several glasses of alcohol without getting intoxicated because of their retaining ability.
I didn't have wolf so I had to be careful.
"I don't like the taste," I told her.
She was already getting up to her feet. "Your problem, let's dance," She screamed in delight, moving her body fluidly to the beat of the song.
I stayed put on my chair. "No, Hazel, I'd rather stay here and watch you."
She didn't bother responding as she dragged me away from my chair, pulling me to the dance floor. Then she leaned closer and whispered.
"You're the hottest girl in this pack and I'm sure you agreed to come here with me because you wanted to take your mind off things. So do that and allow tomorrow to take care of itself," She raised her glass for an imaginary toast and began to dance wildly.
Since she was unmated, men flocked around her while she ground her ass on their bodies without hesitation. I stared at her in awe, watching how she smoothly entertained anyone that came her way.
After staying on the dance floor for some minutes, I decided that it wasn't for me so I returned to the counter and asked for a shot.
To hell with my former decision. If I couldn't dance like the others, I could at least know what it meant to get drunk and temporarily forget that the man I treasured banged a woman on our bed.
The hairs on my skin rose when I heard an unfamiliar voice behind me.
'Not tonight,' I murmured in irritation then masked my sour expression with the fakest smile I could come up with.
"Good evening, Mr..."
"David," He drawled, winking seductively at me. "You are breathtakingly gorgeous. Has anyone told you that today?" He spoke with a low tone and took Hazel's former position.
"It seems you're the first," I replied and took a sip from my glass.
He chuckled and stretched his hand. "Like I said before, I'm Mr David and I'd like to make your acquaintance if you don't mind."
I wavered for a while before taking his hand, and the uneasiness I'd been feeling since he came increased.
"Of course, I don't mind." I lied.
Maybe I was overreacting. The man was handsome as hell though he didn't match Gradel's hotness and sexy sturdy physique. I nearly slapped my forehead at the comparison.
I had to stop thinking about him. He was the main reason I patronized this club in the first place.
Mr David drew closer to me, his lustful eyes roving all over my body. His body language screamed how much he wanted me, but he didn't make any move which I appreciated.
"It seems you don't like to dance. I can make you enjoy it if you let me," He wriggled his brows and I snorted.
"Dancing isn't my thing, Mr David. I'd prefer we stay here and have a discussion." I said calmly, enjoying the subtle chase.
His hand fell on my thigh which gradually trailed to the hem of my dress. "Why talk when I can make you feel so good that you won't stop thinking about me?" He smiled confidently and then I froze.
His scent had saturated the room and it was just a matter of time before he would...
"Get your filthy hands off her,"
That was the only thing I heard before he was flung away from my sight. I gulped and shrank backward as my eyes were locked on fierce blue eyes that glared at me.
A deafening silence fell on the club as he took my bag from the counter, his nose flared in anger and another feeling I couldn't explain.
He helped me out from my chair, his face unsmiling. "Let's go home," He ordered.
