Chapter 44 The Hunter’s Ultimatum
The east wing is shaking.
Not from footsteps.
Not from power.
But from Ardan’s collapse.
He kneels in the center of the hall, head bowed, wings fractured into jagged light and darkness.
Every breath he takes cracks through the air like a fault line breaking open.
The hunter stands above him—
motionless, cold, and impossibly still—
as if the world rearranges itself around his judgment.
Lucien keeps Anil behind him, wings lifted like a shield.
Cael steadies himself beside her, every hybrid marking flickering in alarm.
The hunter finally speaks.
“INTERVENTION: MANDATORY.”
Cael swallows.
“Intervention for who?”
The hunter’s head tilts.
“FALLEN UNIT: ARDAN.”
Ardan’s shoulders tense.
A soft laugh escapes him.
Not joyful.
Not sane.
“So you’ll finish what heaven started?”
Cael steps forward—instinctively—hands trembling.
“Don’t hurt him. Please. He’s not gone yet.”
Ardan lifts his head.
His eyes glow with fractured gold and pitch-dark shadow.
“Cael…” he whispers. “Stop pretending I can be saved. You only say that because she would want it.”
Anil steps forward before Cael can respond.
“Ardan,” she whispers, voice breaking. “I don’t want you dead. I want you free.”
“Free?”
He laughs again, bitter.
“I was only ever free in the moments I loved you… and even then it wasn’t mine.”
Lucien mutters, “Oh, here we go—romantic tragedy monologue number forty-two.”
Ardan’s gaze snaps to him.
The hallway warps again—lockers groaning, lights exploding.
“Shut up.”
Cael grabs Lucien’s wrist. “Stop provoking him!”
The hunter ignores all of it.
He raises one hand toward Ardan.
“EXECUTION PROTOCOL: PENDING.”
Anil gasps and moves forward—
but Cael grabs her hand desperately.
“No! If you touch him now, he’ll anchor to you and attack.”
“But if we don’t do something—”
“Anil,” Cael whispers, voice cracking, “he’s not choosing anymore. He’s collapsing.”
The hunter continues:
“OPTION ONE: TERMINATION.”
Anil shakes her head violently.
“No—no, please—there has to be another option—”
The hunter turns his gaze on her.
Freeze-cold.
Calculating.
Then:
“OPTION TWO: CONTAINMENT.”
Lucien’s eyes widen.
“Oh hell, that sounds worse.”
Cael whispers, “Containment means imprisoning his soul—isolating him in stasis. It’s… it’s like erasing time.”
Anil looks horrified.
“You mean locking him away forever?”
“Yes,” Cael whispers. “Or until heaven decides what to do with him.”
Ardan smiles.
Broken.
Wild.
Beautiful in a tragic, terrifying way.
“So I’m either killed… or frozen.
Like a monster.”
The hunter does not argue.
Anil steps forward, tears filling her eyes.
“No. You are NOT a monster—”
Ardan looks at her.
Really looks.
And the tragedy in his expression becomes undeniable.
“You didn’t choose me,” he whispers.
“But I will always choose you.”
His wings flare—
wild light and shadow ripping down the hall.
Lucien pushes Anil behind him again.
“Back—”
But Ardan’s voice cuts through everything:
“Let her choose now.”
The lights die.
The hallway plunges into darkness.
Only Ardan’s glow remains—
broken, flickering, bleeding with grief.
He extends a shaking hand toward Anil.
“Come to me,” he whispers.
“Just once. Just this once.
Let me have one moment where I’m not the one losing you.”
Cael steps between them instantly.
“No.”
Ardan’s voice cracks.
“Move, Cael.”
“I won’t.”
Ardan’s wings tremble with rage.
“You stole her,” he whispers, “and then you dare tell me I can’t even speak to her?”
Cael stands firm, though his body trembles.
“You’re hurting her.”
“I’m hurting?” Ardan laughs, voice breaking into something hysterical.
“I lost everything. I shattered for her. I fell for her. I DIED for her.”
Anil whispers, “Ardan—stop—”
He turns to her.
“Let me have you,” he whispers.
“Tonight. Now. One moment. One touch. One choice.”
Lucien snarls. “She doesn’t want you.”
Ardan’s eyes snap with pure fury.
“NO—she doesn’t want the version of me you made her believe in.”
He steps forward.
The ground cracks.
Glass shatters.
His voice is a blade drawn from his own heart.
“She loved me in every life except this one.”
Cael whispers, “Because this time she was free.”
That stops Ardan like a strike.
He goes still.
So still the glow around him flickers.
“Free,” he repeats.
Soft.
Deadly.
The hunter speaks again.
“FINALIZATION REQUIRED.”
Ardan doesn’t look at him.
He looks only at Anil.
And whispers:
“Choose.”
Anil covers her mouth, crying.
“I care about you,” she whispers. “I always have. But not like this—not anymore—not in this life.”
Ardan flinches—
as if stabbed.
His wings shudder.
Fracture.
Cael reaches out a hand.
“Ardan—”
Ardan steps back.
His glow sharpens into something cold.
“Then let them bury me,” he whispers.
“Because I won’t submit.”
He turns to the hunter.
Broken.
Defiant.
Resigned.
“Do it.”
The hunter raises his hand.
Light gathers—
Anil screams, “WAIT—PLEASE—”
But the hunter freezes.
Not from mercy.
But from calculation.
One final line appears, cold and irreversible:
“ALTERNATIVE PATH DETECTED.”
Cael stiffens. “Alternative… what?”
Lucien’s wings tense.
Anil’s heart pounds.
And the hunter speaks:
“ALLOW THE FALL.”
All three gasp.
“No,” Cael whispers. “That’s—”
Lucien curses. “They’ll let him turn into whatever monster he becomes—”
Anil whispers:
“Why?”
The hunter answers:
“SURVIVAL VALUE UNKNOWN.
EVOLUTION POTENTIAL: HIGH.
INTERVENTION SUSPENDED.”
And then he fades.
Gone.
Leaving Ardan kneeling on the ground—
Broken.
Unpunished.
Uncontrolled.
And free to fall as far as he wants.
As far as he needs.
Anil whispers, trembling:
“…oh god.”
Cael takes her hand tightly.
Lucien steps close behind them.
Because all three understand—
This wasn’t mercy.
It was a sentence.
Ardan lifts his head.
And smiles through tears.
A terrible, beautiful smile.
“I’m not dead,” he whispers.
“I’m becoming.”
