Chapter 42 The Hunter’s Decision
The courtyard still feels hollow where Ardan vanished —
like the air hasn’t decided whether to collapse or scream.
Anil stands frozen.
Lucien breathes hard through his teeth.
Cael kneels on the ground, chest heaving, wings trembling in raw fear and exhaustion.
The hunter remains in the center of the courtyard, unmoving.
Cold.
Impartial.
Unbroken by everything that just happened.
A voice with no emotion cuts through the silence:
“CLASSIFICATION: COMPLETE.”
Lucien snarls. “You think you can classify us after that? After you let him—”
The hunter raises a hand.
Lucien’s voice cuts out mid-syllable.
Anil gasps and steps forward. “Stop—”
The hunter doesn’t even look at her.
He looks at Cael.
“HYBRID UNIT: PROBATIONARY.”
Cael shakily gets to his feet, Anil supporting him.
“Probationary?” he whispers. “What does that mean?”
The hunter answers:
“EVOLUTION INCOMPLETE.
STRUCTURE UNSTABLE.
TERMINATION PREMATURE.”
Lucien finds his voice again and snaps, “You’re saying he’s too unfinished to kill?”
The hunter’s face doesn’t change.
“CONFIRMED.”
Cael’s wings twitch violently.
Anil squeezes his hand. “You’re safe,” she whispers.
But Cael doesn’t look relieved.
“Not safe,” he murmurs. “Just postponed.”
The hunter shifts his attention to Lucien.
“FALLEN UNIT: NON-THREAT.”
Lucien bristles. “Excuse me?”
The hunter doesn’t clarify.
He looks at Anil next.
And everything inside Cael goes still.
Anil holds her chin high.
She knows better than to show fear.
The hunter steps toward her.
Lucien moves instantly, wings flaring to block him.
But the hunter gestures—
—and Lucien is swept aside like smoke.
Anil stands exposed.
Cael tries to run to her, but the hunter freezes him with a single thought.
“Anil!” Cael chokes out.
The hunter circles her.
Slowly.
Methodically.
Studying the air around her,
the anchor in her chest,
the residue of countless reincarnations woven into her soul.
Then—
“ANOMALY: PRIMORDIAL.”
Anil’s blood goes cold. “What does that mean?”
Cael’s eyes widen. “Not that. Anything but that.”
Lucien pushes himself up. “Hello? Translation?”
Cael whispers:
“She isn’t an anomaly because of the anchor.
She’s an anomaly because of her soul.”
The hunter continues:
“CYCLE DEVIATION DETECTED.”
A shiver breaks across Anil’s spine. “Devi—deviation?”
Cael’s breathing quickens. “It means you slipped the cycle. You stopped repeating the past. You broke your fate.”
Lucien grins. “Good for her.”
The hunter does not agree.
“CORRECTION REQUIRED.”
Anil freezes.
Cael lunges forward, screaming, “NO!”
The hunter holds him midair, choking.
Lucien’s wings blaze with shadow and flame. “Touch her and I will tear your head—”
The hunter ignores both of them.
He raises one hand toward Anil.
A soft hum fills the courtyard—
the sound of fate rewriting itself above her head.
Cael thrashes in the air, gasping for breath.
“DON’T TOUCH HER!”
Anil steps back, terrified.
“What are you doing?” she whispers.
The hunter answers:
“RETURNING YOU TO DESIGN.”
Cael’s voice breaks.
“No… no, please—don’t take her choice…”
But the hunter begins to reach for her—
And suddenly —
abruptly —
violently —
the entire courtyard shakes.
Not from the hunter.
From the east wing.
A scream erupts from the shadows—
raw, cracked, terrible.
Ardan.
An explosion of corrupted grace tears up the hallway, blowing out windows, ripping banners, shaking the stone beneath their feet.
Lucien stiffens. “Oh hell NO—he’s breaking completely—”
The hunter lowers his hand.
Stops the correction.
Turns.
He faces the east wing, calculating, analyzing, processing in silence.
Cael gasps in air, dropping to the ground.
Anil runs to him, holding him tightly.
“Cael—are you alright?”
He nods weakly.
But his eyes are fixed on the hallway.
“Ardan…”
Another scream shreds through the school —
this one deeper, not human, not angelic.
Lucien whispers, “He’s changing.”
Cael whispers back, “He’s falling.”
The hunter steps toward the hallway.
His voice echoes like a sentence being passed:
“THREAT LEVEL: ESCALATING.”
Anil stands in front of Cael protectively. “Wait—where are you going?”
The hunter answers without looking back:
“ANOMALY PRIORITY SHIFTED.”
Cael’s eyes widen. “Shifted? Shifted to WHO—”
The hunter stops at the courtyard’s exit.
Turns his head slightly.
“ARDAN.”
Lucien exhales. “Good. Go clean up your mess.”
Cael whispers, “No… you don’t understand. If the hunter classifies him—”
Anil finishes, voice shaking:
“—as a threat…”
Cael nods.
“He won’t try to correct Ardan.”
He looks at Anil.
Eyes full of dread.
“He’ll try to erase him.”
The hunter vanishes into the east wing.
Silence falls.
Except for one thing:
The sound of Ardan’s grace breaking.
Over.
And over.
And over.
Anil whispers:
“Cael… what do we do?”
Cael’s hybrid markings flicker like dying starlight.
He meets her eyes.
And whispers the truth neither of them want to accept:
“We have to save him.”
