Chapter 24 Redemption's Price
Chapter 24 Redemption's Price
Brandon's POV
I watch from the FBI command center as Ellis and Isla emerge from the collapsed construction site, covered in dust and adrenaline and the terrible knowledge that they've won and lost simultaneously.
I've been in protective custody for two weeks now, in a room with beige walls and fluorescent lights, waiting for the trial, waiting for my chance to testify, waiting for redemption that might never come.
Detective Patterson enters with documents and a grim expression.
"Lloyd's dead," she tells me. "Heart attack in custody."
I process this slowly. The man who threatened my mother, who coerced me into betrayal, who destroyed my life—he's simply gone. There's no justice in that. There's no closure.
"What happens now?" I ask.
"Now we prepare your testimony," Lara says. "We make sure Burks goes down. We build a case so airtight that even the shadow committee's lawyers can't dismantle it."
"And Fuller?" I ask.
"Still missing," Lara admits. "But we'll find him. Eventually."
I want to believe her. I want to believe that justice will prevail, that the truth will set everyone free, that my betrayal will be forgiven because I eventually did the right thing.
But I've learned that the world doesn't work on wants and hopes. It works on power and leverage and the terrible compromises we make to survive.
A federal agent enters and whispers something to Lara. Her expression darkens.
"The trial date has been moved up," she tells me. "Three weeks. Which means we need you court-ready in fourteen days."
Three weeks to prepare a case against a federal judge. Three weeks to present evidence that powerful people don't want presented. Three weeks to stand in a courtroom and testify against the system I helped perpetuate.
I think about my mother, safe in protective custody, unaware of the depths of my betrayal. I think about Isla, who's chosen to forgive me even though I haven't truly earned that forgiveness. I think about Ellis, who risked everything to stop people I helped empower.
"I'm ready," I say.
Because redemption isn't about being comfortable. It's about doing the right thing even when it costs you everything.
Even when the game is still rigged against you.
