Chapter 118.
Chapter 118.
118\. Rachael.
I retired at the corner, crying like a baby while Lyanna held on to me. I was inconsolable, remembering how my uncle had died, with his head severed off. He was just an outsider, a human who decided to take me in of his own free will. He could have left me alone or sold me for some money to spare him the trouble.
He didn't deserve to die like that. My mother and father didn't deserve to die too, for having me.
"Sirius Dark was exiled from the pack after we found out he was selling confidential information to our enemies. How much of that is true?" Nathan demanded.
Edgar's eyes rolled to his sons, his gaze intense and pleading. "That is true, but the main reason he was exiled was his growing extremism," he said, his voice laced with a mix of sadness and warning. "I thought Sirius was a person I could control, but he grew wild and threatened to take what was mine." The words painted a picture of a complex and tumultuous relationship between Edgar and Sirius, one that had ultimately ended in exile.
Edgar's eyes seemed to cloud over, as if memories of Sirius's betrayal still lingered. "That's why he trained in the dark arts and got stronger," he croaked, his voice barely above a whisper. The machines surrounding him seemed to beep more urgently, as if echoing the sense of danger that Sirius posed.
Despite his frailty, Edgar's grip on his sons' hands was surprisingly strong. He raised his hands up, and Nathan and Ethan held them, their faces set with determination. "Promise me you will take him down," Edgar urged, his eyes burning with intensity. "He can't have the Goddess' vessel, he is too radical, too extreme." The words were a plea, a desperate attempt to ensure that his legacy was protected.
Edgar's voice cracked, but his conviction remained unwavering. He knew that Sirius was a threat, a threat that would stop at nothing to achieve his goals. And he knew that his sons were the only ones who could stop him. "Promise me," Edgar repeated, his eyes locked on his sons'. Nathan and Ethan exchanged a glance, their faces set with determination. They knew what they had to do, and they were ready to do it.
"It's alright. It's all good, we will get to the end of this." Lyanna held my face. "Wipe your tears, it's okay." She comforted me.
I sobbed a few more times and went up to Edgar. His eyes were full of life, as he peered at me.
"Mrs. Quincy, do I have a final verdict before I go?" Edgar asked, his voice weak but filled with a deep longing. "Can I ask for your forgiveness?" His eyes locked onto mine, filled with a sense of remorse and regret. He knew that he had made mistakes, that he had hurt people he cared about, and he wanted to make amends.
I looked at him, my heart filled with a mix of emotions. I could see the pain and the regret in his eyes, and I knew that he was genuinely sorry for what he had done. "I—don't have anything against you, I understand what happened," I said, my voice soft and gentle. "I forgive you." The words seemed to bring a sense of relief to Edgar's face, a sense of peace that he had not felt in a long time.
"You have treated me well since I came here, you never tried to harm me in any way," I continued, my voice filled with gratitude. "I hope you are at peace, knowing that you helped me, Lord Edgar." Edgar smiled, a sad but contented smile. He was glad that I had forgiven him, glad that he could leave this world with a clear conscience.
And then, his expression turned serious, his eyes locked onto mine with a deep intensity. "Look after my son," he said, his voice filled with a sense of urgency. "And when I say my son, I mean Ethan. I know what you have been doing when you are alone together."
I felt a flush rise to my cheeks as I closed my eyes, my heart racing with emotion. "So you knew?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. My cheeks felt flushed as tears rolled down, tears of sadness and joy mixed together.
Edgar's smile grew wider, a knowing smile that seemed to say he had been waiting for this moment for a long time. He nodded, his eyes filled with a deep warmth and affection. "I've known for a while now," he said, his voice filled with a sense of contentment. "I'm glad to see you two together."
He looked up at the ceiling and groaned, his eyes squinting in pain as his body began to weaken further. "Please, bring your hands, let me touch them," he whispered, his voice barely audible. His eyes pleaded with me, filled with a deep longing and affection. I couldn't resist his request, and I reached out to hold his arms, feeling the frailty of his skin and the weakness of his muscles.
Lord Edgar sighed, a deep and ragged sound, as he wrapped his fingers around mine. He held on tightly, his grip surprisingly strong despite his fragile state. I could feel his pulse racing beneath my skin, and I knew that he was clinging to life with every last bit of strength.
As I looked into his eyes, I knew what was going to happen next. I knew that this was the end, that Lord Edgar's time was running out. But I couldn't accept it. I couldn't bear the thought of losing him, of saying goodbye to the man who had become like a father to me. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes as I felt a wave of grief wash over me.
Lord Edgar's eyes locked onto mine, and I could see the love and affection in them. He seemed to know that I was struggling to come to terms with what was happening, and he squeezed my hands gently. "It's okay," he whispered, his voice barely audible. But it wasn't okay. Nothing about this was okay.
I felt a sob rise up in my throat as I gazed at him, memorising every detail of his face, every line and crease. I wanted to hold onto this moment, to freeze time and keep him with me. I had started to see him as a father figure not long ago.
"No, it's not okay." My voice broke. Ethan held my shoulder and clenched his jaws. Only his red eyes conveyed emotions on his emotionless face.
"It's okay, Rachael. It's okay." He sounded distant. A tear rolled down Nathan's eyes, but he clenched his teeth.
"I love you, Father, Ethan and I will always love you." Nathan clenched his teeth.
"Everything is in good hands, Father. I will make sure that your name isn't soiled. I will rule like the way you taught me," Ethan assured.
Edgar smiled. "I know. I will always love you, my sons. Never break away, you are my pride and I'm proud of you."
