Chapter 116 MARK YOU AGAIN
Chapter 116 MARK YOU AGAIN
He asked her three days after they got back to the territory.
No fancy speeches. No huge big scene. Just Ronan, stepping into the dim east corridor at nine at night, sliding up beside her the way he always did when his mind was made up and he couldn't wait another second to say what was on his chest.
Lyra was carrying a warm mug of herbal tea that Nara had practically forced into her hands. The older woman had been tracking her every move since they got back, obsessing over her water intake with total healer focus.
Ronan fell right into step beside her, his massive shoulder brushing against hers. His heat rolled off his skin, turning her blood warm.
She turned her head, catching him staring straight down the dark hallway. He had that tight, focused look he got when he was trying to put heavy feelings into plain words.
"I want to mark you again," he said, his deep voice heavy and low. "Formally. In front of the entire pack."
Lyra paused, glancing at her cup. "You already marked me, Ronan. My neck still throbs from it."
"I know," he said softly, stopping to look at her. "That first time was just for us. Dirty, wild, and private. But this..." He paused, his dark eyes searching hers. "This is different. The pack needs to see it. You deserve to be claimed in front of everyone."
Lyra looked up into his handsome, rough face. She felt the heavy stone walls of the old packhouse humming around them in the quiet night.
"When?" she whispered.
"Tomorrow," he said instantly. "If you'll let me. Or whenever you're ready."
She locked eyes with her Alpha. "Tomorrow."
Nara found out at seven the next morning and went into a total frenzy, barking orders, firing up the stoves, and barking at young wolves to clean the main hall. But the pack didn't even need Nara's shouting to know what was coming. They felt it through the pack bond before anyone said a word aloud. The electric hum of a big Alpha moment swept through the mindlink like hot summer lightning. By eight in the morning, every single wolf had cleared their schedule to be there.
That was Shadowpine. That was what it meant to have a real family again.
Lyra spent most of the morning with Elena in the small sitting room off the corridor. Elena had pushed her departure back three days, insisting she wasn't leaving until she checked the baby again and saw this ceremony through. They sat together, drinking warm tea, talking through the past and the future like two women finally figuring out how to be mother and daughter.
"Your father," Elena murmured softly, staring into her glass.
Lyra looked up.
"If he were here..." Elena swallowed hard, a rare crack appearing in her calm posture. "He would have stood right at the front of that room. He would have had his arms crossed over his chest, biting his lip, trying so hard not to cry while his little girl got claimed by her mate."
Lyra felt a lump form in her throat. "Do I do that?"
"All the time," Elena smiled faintly, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "You look just like him when you try to hide your feelings." Elena reached out, gently patting Lyra's knee. "I'm really glad I'm here, Lyra. I know twenty years of missed time doesn't just disappear. But I'm glad I get to see this."
Lyra stared at her mother, her chest squeezing tight. "I'm glad you're here too."
Elena nodded, quickly wiping her eye and shifting back into practical doctor mode before things got too emotional. "Now, let's talk about that third-trimester pressure on your hips. I'm checking you one more time before the night starts."
Lyra chuckled. "You're going to check me whether I say yes or no, aren't you?"
"Absolutely," Elena smirked.
By dusk, the main hall was packed.
Shadowpine didn't have a fancy altar or a grand stage. The old stone house was built for living, for rough winters, for tight-knit family. But the main hall was huge, dominated by a massive stone fireplace that threw long, golden shadows across the room.
All fourteen pack wolves were gathered inside.
Kade was practically vibrating near the front, trying hard not to grin. Nara stood by the side wall with her arms crossed, biting her lip to keep from sobbing. Brennan stood near the back like an impenetrable brick wall, his heavy hand resting on Cole's shoulder. Zara leaned against the far stone pillar, her body relaxed, watching the scene with quiet approval.
Dara stood close to the crackling fire. When Lyra walked into the room, Dara caught her eye and gave her a deep, meaningful nod that said everything: I'm right here. You deserve every bit of this.
Elena stood near the heavy wooden doors, watching her daughter with pure maternal pride.
Lyra took a deep breath and walked straight toward the center of the room.
Ronan was waiting for her.
He didn't have his scary Alpha mask on. He wasn't wearing his commander face. He just stood there in a simple black shirt that stretched tight over his massive chest, his dark eyes locked entirely on her. He looked raw, vulnerable, and completely hers.
Lyra stopped right in front of him. The entire room went dead quiet, save for the crackle of the wood fire.
"I'm not doing a long speech," Ronan told her, his deep, gravelly voice echoing softly off the stone walls. "I suck at speeches, and you already know every thought in my head anyway."
Lyra smiled, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"What I want to do," Ronan continued, stepping closer until his hot chest was almost touching hers, "is claim you properly in front of the people who matter. Because a love like ours deserves witnesses."
He reached out, his massive, warm hands framing her face, his thumbs gently brushing over her high cheekbones. The sheer heat of his skin made her shiver.
"I carried you onto my border on a freezing December night," he whispered, his eyes burning into hers. "Barefoot. Dress torn to shreds. Broken, but fighting. I picked you up and carried you inside. I didn't even know your name, but every wolf instinct in my body slammed awake. I knew what you were to me the second I touched you."
Lyra held her breath, her chest heaving.
"Everything we've suffered through since that night was just me proving I was right," Ronan growled softly, his eyes darkening with possessive hunger. "And I was right. You are my whole damn world, Lyra. You chose this territory. You chose this pack. You chose me. Not because you were trapped, but because you wanted me."
He leaned down, his hot breath brushing against her lips. "Now I'm going to mark you so every single wolf in this forest knows who you belong to."
"Do it," she whispered.
Ronan didn't hesitate. He pulled her flush against his hard body, wrapping one massive arm around her lower back to support her weight and her swollen belly. His other hand tilted her chin up, exposing the soft, sensitive slope of her neck.
He dipped his head and sunk his teeth straight into her mating mark.
A sharp spike of intense pleasure-pain shot straight down Lyra's spine. She let out a soft, breathy gasp, her fingers digging desperately into his thick shoulders.
The moment his teeth sank into her flesh, their mate bond erupted.
A massive wave of pure, hot golden light surged out from Lyra’s hands, washing over the entire room. It wasn't an attack—it was raw, unadulterated mate magic, loud and proud, announcing to every wolf present that their Luna was officially, permanently claimed.
The link between them slammed shut forever. Bound. Locked. Unbreakable.
Ronan slowly pulled his teeth back, his hot tongue licking over the fresh bite mark to heal the skin. He kept his face buried in her neck, breathing in her sweet scent, his heavy chest rising and falling hard against hers.
Lyra clung to him, her knees weak, totally dazed by the sheer power of the bond settling into a deep, permanent hum.
Around them, the room exploded into wild cheers and howls.
Kade let out a loud, emotional yell. Nara wiped tears from her face, laughing. Dara let out a whistle that echoed off the high ceiling. Even cold, silent Zara gave a firm, respectful nod from the back of the room.
They were a family. She was their Luna.
Later that night, after the hearty food was eaten and the pack had settled into a quiet, cozy night around the fire, Lyra stepped out onto the chilly front porch.
She held a warm mug in her hands, watching her breath mist in the freezing air. She pulled her phone out of her coat pocket and dialed a number she knew by heart.
It rang twice.
"Lyra," Lucifer's deep, smooth voice came through the speaker.
"We did the formal marking tonight," she said quietly, her voice steady. "In front of the whole pack."
Silence stretched over the line for a long, heavy moment as he digested her words.
"Congratulations, Lyra," he said softly.
There was no anger in his tone anymore. No dangerous edge. Just the quiet acceptance of a powerful man who had finally realized where he belonged in her story.
"Thank you, Lucifer," she murmured.
She could hear him taking a slow breath on the other end. "Is she doing alright? The baby?"
"She's kicking like crazy right now," Lyra smiled, rubbing her bump through her coat. "Elena is watching her like a hawk."
"Good," he said quietly. "That's good."
Lyra looked out at the dark pine trees swaying in the night wind. "Come visit next week. For your monthly pack check. Come see us."
There was another brief pause on the line.
"I'll be there," Lucifer promised.
"Okay," she said softly. "Goodnight, Lucifer."
"Goodnight, little bird."
She hung up the phone and stepped back into the warm, glowing house.
Ronan was sitting at the wooden kitchen table, reviewing border maps with Pira. The second the door clicked shut, his dark eyes snapped straight to her. He didn't have to ask who she had been talking to—he read the peace on her face instantly.
He gave her a single, slow nod, opening his heavy arm to invite her over.
Lyra walked straight to him, sliding onto his lap. His massive arm wrapped tight around her waist, pulling her flush against his broad, warm chest. She rested her head against his neck, breathing in his dark, masculine scent.
Her baby gave a hard, sudden kick against Ronan's hip.
Ronan chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound in his chest, resting his big palm over her belly. "She's active tonight."
"She knows she's home," Lyra whispered, closing her eyes as his warm hand gently rubbed her stomach.
Outside, the ancient pine trees stood tall, guarding the land. Inside, the pack slept safe and sound. And in just a few short weeks, their wild, beautiful world was going to welcome one more tiny wolf into the fold.
Everything was right where it was supposed to be.
