Chapter 101 POWER AND PROXIMITY

Chapter 101 POWER AND PROXIMITY
Elena changed the session without announcing it.
She simply arrived at the eastern yard at the usual time and set herself up differently... not at the northern edge where she usually stood, but in the center. She had nothing in her hands. No notebook. No notes. That meant whatever she was planning was something she had been thinking about long enough that it had become something she simply knew.
Lyra came out and read the setup at once.
“Different today,” she said.
“Different today,” Elena confirmed.
“How different?”
Elena looked at her. “I want both of them present.”
Lyra went still.
“Ronan in the corner,” Elena said. “Same as usual. But I want Lucifer at the wall.”
“You’ve been running sessions with just the anchor. Why change it now?”
“Because the third layer isn’t going to open in a controlled environment with optimal conditions. It’s going to open when Caius arrives and the stakes are real and the emotional landscape is exactly as complicated as your life currently is.” She held Lyra’s gaze. “I want to know what happens when everything is in the room at once. The anchor and the complication and the full weight of where you actually are.”
Lyra looked at the eastern yard.
“And if it goes wrong?”
“It won’t go wrong. It might be harder. It might require more from you. But the anchor holds, your control has been solid for two weeks, and you’ve been at ninety percent with increasing stability.” She paused. “I need to know if the proximity complicates the power or if you can hold through it.”
Lyra thought about the corridor that morning. The note still in her pocket. Ronan’s hand on her back at breakfast. The complicated geometry of a building that had started to feel like hers in spite of everything.
“I can hold through it,” she said.
“Show me.”
She went to find them separately.
Ronan first, in the map room with the border intelligence. He looked up when she came in. She said, “Elena wants you in the corner this morning. Different session,” and he closed the folder and stood without asking for details.
That was Ronan.
Lucifer was harder.
She found him at the water station at the end of his own morning session. She stopped a few feet away and said, “Elena wants you at the wall for my session this morning,” and watched his face go through something careful.
“The wall,” he said.
“Same position as before. When the surge happened.”
“She wants both of us there.” Not a question. He understood the shape of it faster than she had explained it.
“Yes.”
He looked at her for a moment.
“Is that what you want?”
She appreciated that he asked.
“It’s what the training requires. Whether it’s what I want is a separate question.”
He held her gaze.
“I’ll be at the wall.”
They assembled without ceremony.
Ronan took the corner... the same corner that had become his over weeks of sessions, the particular spot where his presence was most useful, where she could find him without looking. Elena stood in the center. Lyra took her position.
Lucifer stood at the wall.
She felt the yard differently with all of them in it.
Not worse. Just different. Denser somehow, the air holding more than its usual weight.
She did the inventory. Baby: active this morning, the rolling movement that meant she was present and paying attention. Power: warm and immediate, sitting right at the surface the way it lived now that she had stopped restricting it. Second layer: accessible, not yet open. Anchor: in the corner, exactly where it should be.
At the wall: Lucifer. Present in the way he had been learning to be present... the not-needing version, the one she had watched him practice in the courtyard and at the desk and through every small honest thing he had been doing for weeks.
She could feel all of it at once.
This was Elena’s point.
This was the actual condition of her life.
“Ready,” Elena said.
“Yes.”
She dropped in.
The first layer came immediately.
The warmth, the gold settling into her hands with the automatic ease that had replaced the effort of the early months. She held it. Pressed past it.
Second layer.
The web came up. Bonds everywhere... the Bloodmoon pack bonds running through the building, the curse remnants in the wolves who had been affected before she broke Shadowpine’s, the particular texture of each wolf in proximity. The mate bond blazing from her chest toward Ronan’s corner, gold and certain and more present than anything else in the web.
And at the wall...
Not a bond. Not the fraying thread. That was gone, severed cleanly, the southward pull absent the way it had been absent since dawn on the eastern perimeter.
But something.
She did not have a word for it in the second layer’s vocabulary. Not a bond. Not nothing either. The particular quality of a person who mattered in your history standing close enough to register in the web, leaving a mark the way things left marks when they had been significant, regardless of whether they were still connected.
She held both layers.
Elena started the interference.
The particular pressure she created, the disruption that came without physical contact, pressing at the edges of the power from the outside. Lyra held through it. She let the disruption happen. She did not react, did not push back. She simply maintained the hold through the interference the way Elena had trained her to.
Three minutes.
Four.
Elena increased the pressure.
Lyra felt the power want to surge... the particular impulse of something that did not like being pressed at from the outside. She held it. Found the anchor in the corner, steady and present, not needing anything from her, simply there.
She held.
Then Elena did something new.
She said, quietly, from the center of the yard, “Lucifer. Move toward the wall. Closer.”
Lyra felt him move.
Three steps closer to the yard from his position at the wall. She felt it through the second layer immediately, the quality of his presence shifting, becoming more present, more immediate. The mark he left in the web becoming slightly more distinct.
The power flickered.
Not a surge. A hesitation. The particular response of something taking in new input.
She breathed.
Found the anchor.
The blazing gold of the mate bond, the particular warmth of Ronan not needing anything, simply being completely there.
She held through the flicker.
The power steadied.
She pressed toward the threshold.
The door to the third layer, vast and ancient, the place she had been approaching deliberately for weeks. She pressed toward it with the full complicated reality of the yard present... Elena’s interference, Lucifer’s closer presence leaving its mark, the anchor blazing from the corner, Rena active and attentive the way she always was during sessions.
She pressed.
Ninety-one.
Ninety-two.
Elena said, from somewhere that felt very far away, “Hold it there.”
She held.
The threshold pressed back at her. The size of what was behind it made itself known the way it always did... enormous, ancient, more than one person’s body was designed to contain, and yet contained by her specifically because that was what she was.
She held it for ninety seconds.
Came back.
Clean. On her feet. Both layers releasing in sequence, the web fading, the warmth settling back to its resting state.
The yard was ordinary around her.
She looked at Elena.
Elena was looking at her with the expression she used when the data had come in and it was better than she had budgeted for.
“Ninety-three,” Elena said. “While being actively disrupted and with a second significant presence in the yard.”
Lyra breathed.
Looked at Ronan.
He was still in the corner. Still present with the quality she had oriented toward twice in the session... the not-needing kind, the completely-there kind. He looked at her with the steady warmth of someone who had done the thing required of him and was glad it had been enough.
She looked at the wall.
Lucifer.
He had moved back to his original position at some point during the session. She had not tracked when. He stood with his hand on the stone wall beside him, not gripping the way he had during the surge, something different this time. Simply resting. His palm flat against the stone in the way of someone who needed to feel something solid and present.
He was looking at her.
She looked back.
“What did it feel like from there?”
He held her gaze.
“Like standing next to something that had always been true about you. Finally being allowed to be true.”
The yard was very quiet.
Elena made a note in her notebook. The scratch of the pen was loud in the silence.
Ronan came out of the corner.
He stopped beside Lyra.
She felt the warmth of him, the particular close warmth, and she did not step into it or reach for his hand. She simply felt it there, present and certain.
The two of them and Lucifer looking at each other across the yard.
Elena said, without looking up from her notebook, “Three more days.”
Both men looked at Lyra.
She looked back at both of them.
Felt the baby move, the deliberate kind, the I’m-here kind.
Felt the power at ninety-three sitting in her veins like something that had been waiting its whole life to be this open.
Felt the complicated geography of the yard, all of them in it, all of them real.
Three more days.
She was going to be ready.
