Reminisce

The sun had begun to dip below the horizon, casting a soft glow over the balcony where Victoria and Sophie sat side by side, a quiet evening breeze brushing through their hair. The past few years had been a whirlwind of change, growth, and, sometimes, heartbreak—but in this moment, the two women found solace in each other’s company, reflecting on the journey that had brought them to this point.

Sophie took a deep breath, staring out at the city lights below. “It’s crazy, isn’t it? How much has changed in such a short time.”

Victoria nodded, her fingers idly tracing the rim of her wine glass. “I never thought we’d end up here, Sophie. I don’t know where I thought I’d be, but it wasn’t this.”

“Yeah,” Sophie said with a laugh, her voice tinged with nostalgia. “I remember when you first told me about Ethan’s father, and all that drama with Zander. I thought, ‘How is she going to get through all of this?’”

Victoria chuckled, the memory of those chaotic days bringing a bittersweet smile to her face. “I wasn’t sure either. It felt like everything was falling apart. But, somehow, it didn’t. It’s hard to believe now, but I found my way.”

Sophie turned to her, her expression softening. “You’ve always been strong, though. I mean, look at you now. You’ve got your career, your family… Zander, Ethan—you’ve built something beautiful.”

Victoria’s eyes lingered on the horizon, her thoughts drifting to Zander and Ethan. She could still remember the ache she felt before she truly believed in the possibility of their happiness.

There had been so many doubts, so many nights spent wondering if she was doing the right thing. But, as she looked at the life she had now—her successful art career, her thriving relationship with Zander, and the joyful moments she shared with Ethan—it felt like every hardship had been worth it.

“Yeah,” Victoria whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “I didn’t think I’d ever get here. But I’m grateful for everything I’ve been through to get to this point.”

Sophie smiled gently, a knowing look in her eyes. “You’ve always had that strength. Even when you didn’t see it in yourself, I did.”

Victoria turned to her friend, her heart swelling with appreciation. “You’ve been there through it all, Sophie. Through the mess, the mistakes, the moments when I didn’t think I could keep going. I couldn’t have done this without you.”

Sophie reached over, squeezing Victoria’s hand gently. “And you wouldn’t have done it without Zander, either. You two are perfect together. I can see how happy he makes you, and how much Ethan looks up to him.”

Victoria’s eyes softened as she thought of Zander. The man who had stood by her side through everything. “He’s been more than I could have hoped for. And I see how much Ethan loves him. It’s more than just the words. It’s in the way he looks at him, like Zander is his whole world.”

Sophie smiled warmly. “It’s incredible to see how far Zander has come, too. He was so different back then. I’m glad he found his way to you.”

“I’m glad, too,” Victoria agreed, her voice quiet. “But I think the biggest change has been in me. I didn’t realize how much I needed to grow—to let go of the past, to accept things as they are, and to let myself be happy. Zander’s taught me that. And Ethan… Ethan’s been my constant reminder that love can heal, that family is something we create, not just something we’re born into.”

Sophie let out a soft sigh, her expression thoughtful. “I think we all have our own version of healing. We’ve all been through different kinds of struggles, but we come out of it stronger in the end. I see it in you. I see it in me, too.”

Victoria gave Sophie a soft smile. “You’ve come a long way, too. I know it hasn’t been easy with everything going on with Aaron, but you’re doing it. You’re building your own happiness.”

Sophie looked down for a moment, her fingers fiddling with the edge of her glass. “Yeah, it’s been complicated. But I think, for the first time, I’m figuring out what I really want. I’m starting to believe that I deserve something real, something lasting.”

Victoria’s heart warmed at the sincerity in her friend’s voice. “You do, Sophie. You deserve all the happiness in the world.”

Sophie’s lips quirked upward. “And you’ve got it. You’ve got everything you’ve wanted.”

Victoria shook her head. “I don’t think I could have planned this life if I tried. But it’s better than I ever imagined. I’ve got a family, a future… a home.”

“You’ve earned it,” Sophie said, her voice full of pride.

A comfortable silence passed between them as they sat together, each lost in their own thoughts. The city lights shimmered in the distance, the sound of the breeze brushing through the trees outside filling the space around them.

It was a peaceful moment, one that reminded Victoria of how far she had come. And how, despite all the bumps and twists along the way, she had found exactly what she needed—love, support, and the kind of happiness that comes from truly understanding who you are and what you want.

Finally, Sophie broke the silence with a grin. “Well, if I’m going to be a bridesmaid at your wedding, I’d better get started on planning my outfit.”

Victoria laughed, her heart light. “I think we’ve still got a bit of time before we get to that. But, sure, you’re on the list.”

Sophie rolled her eyes playfully. “Of course, I’m on the list. I’m your best friend, after all.”

“You’ve always been,” Victoria replied softly, her voice filled with gratitude. “And you always will be.”

As the two women sat together in the quiet, reflecting on everything they had experienced, Victoria knew one thing for sure: no matter where life took them, they had each other. And that was enough.

Sophie grinned and gave Victoria’s hand a squeeze. “So, now that we’ve established I’m on the list, let’s talk about the actual wedding plans. Any thoughts yet?”

Victoria chuckled. “Well, it’s all still in the early stages. But I know I want something simple, intimate. I don’t need a huge, extravagant ceremony. Just close family, and a few of our closest friends.”

Sophie leaned back, tilting her head thoughtfully. “I think that sounds perfect. And I’m sure Ethan will love being part of it.”

Victoria’s smile softened at the thought of her son. “He’s already talking about how he’s going to be the ‘bestest’ ring bearer ever.” She laughed lightly. “It’s cute, though. He’s so excited about it.”

“I bet Zander will be just as excited as Ethan,” Sophie remarked. “He really does adore that kid, doesn’t he?”

Victoria’s gaze softened as she thought about Zander and Ethan. “He does. Zander is the best thing that’s ever happened to both of us. I can see it in the way he looks at Ethan, how much he cares. I’m so grateful for him.”

Sophie’s expression shifted slightly, a soft smile crossing her face. “You’ve really built a beautiful family, Vic. I’m so happy for you.”

Victoria met her friend’s eyes, the depth of her emotion clear. “Thank you, Sophie. That means a lot. You’ve been by my side through everything. I don’t know where I’d be without you.”

Sophie nodded, her voice sincere. “We’ve been through a lot together, and I’m not going anywhere. We’ve got this.”

Victoria felt a rush of gratitude for her friend, the weight of everything she had overcome becoming lighter in her presence. “You know, I used to think happiness was something that happened to other people. But now… now I know it’s something you can create, something you build with the people you love.”

Sophie smiled warmly. “You’ve always had that inside you, Vic. You just needed to believe it.”

Victoria nodded slowly, her heart full. “Maybe. But I think I finally do.”

They both sat in comfortable silence for a few moments, watching the stars appear in the sky, the quiet of the evening wrapping around them like a soft blanket. The world felt still, peaceful, as if it, too, was reflecting the journey they had both taken.

Finally, Sophie broke the silence with a playful nudge. “So, any idea on the venue? I know you don’t want anything too extravagant, but I bet Zander would want to go all out. You’ve got a tough decision ahead of you.”

Victoria laughed softly, shaking her head. “Zander would probably want to rent a private island if it were up to him.” She sighed dramatically. “But I want something simple. Maybe we’ll find somewhere cozy and beautiful. Somewhere where we can just focus on what really matters.”

Sophie raised her eyebrows. “A private island might not be such a bad idea, though.”

Victoria gave her a knowing look. “You’re impossible.”

Sophie laughed, the sound light and carefree. “I know. But I’m your impossible best friend, so it’s my job.”

Victoria’s smile deepened as she looked at Sophie, feeling the warmth of her friendship fill her heart. No matter what, no matter how things unfolded in the coming months, she knew one thing would remain constant: the bond she shared with Sophie, and the unwavering support they had always offered each other.

“Thank you,” Victoria whispered again. “For everything.”

Sophie nodded, her voice full of affection. “Always, Vic. You don’t even need to ask.”

Victoria leaned back in her chair, letting the quiet wash over her. Her life had transformed in ways she had never imagined, and with each passing day, it became clearer that the love she had built with Zander, and the life they were now creating, was exactly what she had always needed. But even more than that, she had her son, and she had Sophie—her best friend, her sister in everything that mattered.

And for the first time in a long while, she felt completely at peace.

The soft glow of the setting sun lingered as Sophie and Victoria continued their quiet conversation, the evening breeze brushing against their skin, carrying with it a sense of peace and contentment. The city skyline glittered below them, and yet the most important light in the room came from their shared connection, the quiet understanding they held for one another.

Just as they were beginning to settle into the warmth of the moment, Victoria’s phone buzzed, breaking the serenity. She glanced at the screen and saw the name of her lawyer—Zander’s ex-wife’s lawyer. With a sharp intake of breath, she swiped to answer, and Sophie noticed the immediate change in Victoria’s demeanor.

“Victoria, we have the papers. The divorce is finalized. Daniel and Victoria are legally separated now. The documents were delivered to their new place today,” the lawyer said, their tone matter-of-fact.

The words hit Victoria harder than she expected, and for a moment, she sat still, absorbing the weight of the confirmation. Sophie, ever the perceptive friend, noticed the shift and gently placed a hand on Victoria’s arm, her gaze steady and warm.

Victoria’s voice was quiet but firm when she replied, “Thank you. Please send me the copy when you can.”

As the call ended, Victoria let out a long breath, feeling both a sense of relief and sadness. It was official now—the chapter of her life with Daniel had truly closed. There was no turning back now, no more waiting for things to magically fix themselves. She had let go, and while there was freedom in that, it was also filled with the loss of a dream she had once held close.

Sophie, sensing the depth of the moment, stayed silent for a few beats before speaking. “Are you okay?”

Victoria turned her head slowly, the sadness in her eyes mirroring the weight of the moment. “It’s real now,” she whispered. “I guess I thought maybe we’d find a way to fix it, but now I see we can’t. I don’t know how I feel.”

Sophie nodded, her voice gentle. “It’s okay to feel that way. You’ve been through a lot, and this is a big change. But you’ve also come a long way, Vic. You’ve built a new life, a better one, with Zander and Ethan.”

Victoria blinked back the tears that had suddenly welled in her eyes. She had loved Daniel once, and though it had ended in pain, she knew she wasn’t the same woman who had entered that marriage. That woman had been lost, uncertain, and afraid of what the future might hold. But the woman sitting on the balcony now—this woman had grown. She had fought for herself, for her son, and for her happiness.

“I’m ready for the next chapter,” Victoria said, the words tasting like both a promise and a challenge.

Sophie smiled, the pride in her eyes clear. “I know you are. And I’m right here with you, every step of the way.”

Victoria looked out at the horizon, feeling a strange sense of calm settle in her chest. The night had fallen, and though the divorce papers had been delivered, something inside her had shifted. She didn’t know what the future would bring, but she knew she was no longer afraid of it. The life she was building with Zander, the love they shared, and the family they were creating—that was what mattered. That was where her heart was now.

“We’ll take it one day at a time,” Victoria murmured, her voice resolute. “And whatever comes, we’ll handle it. Together.”

Sophie’s hand squeezed hers, a silent promise in the gesture. “Together.”

And in that moment, as the city lights twinkled around them, Victoria finally felt a peace she hadn’t known for years. The journey ahead wouldn’t always be easy, but she was no longer walking it alone.
