Fifty-two
Zach opened his door to a nightmare he hoped he will never see again. Maisie hanging from Cassidy's arms looking like she had just survived a fight with death.
“What happened?” Zach asked as he stepped out of the doorway and allow Cassidy to enter.
“She drowned.” Cassidy said as Zach turned sharply to look at him.
“And what was she doing in the water by this time of the night.” Zach asked because he could sense that Cassidy was keeping something from him.
“It would be better if you don't know.” Cassidy said after being quiet for a while when Zach asked the former question.
“Why would she go near the water at this time of the night, Cass.” Zach asked in a firm tone which meant that he would not be moved from the issue.
Cassidy sighed. He had tried his best. “She must have gotten a message that states that she should meet up with an informant or something because she was at the seaport... I saw Jeffery throwing her in the water.” Cassidy said as the sound of just Maisie's breathing disturbed the silence.
“Are you telling me that Jeffery tried to kill Maisie?” Zach asked in a deadly silent tone.
“You need to calm down.” Cassidy stated...
“I am done being calm. I will kill that bastard.” Zach rages as he stood up and moved towards the door.
“Now, we finally have evidence that Jeffery tried to kill me, don't ruin it.” Maisie said weakly as Zach hurried back to her side.
“Maisie " Zach started.
“Call the police to come and take my statement and Cassidy's. That should be enough to keep Jeffery away from us. Also, try to trace the cell phone where the text came from.”
“What text?” Zach asked.
“The one that made me go to the seaport.” Maisie answered with a sigh.
“Okay.” Zach started making the call, but Cassidy stopped him.
“You cannot bring me into this.”
Zach looked at his friend with confusion. “You are already in it.”
“You don't understand. I cannot get involved with the court"
“Why.” Maisie asked.
“My identity is a secret to people. I cannot bring my troubles to you guys and it will come when my face is splashed all over media as a witness to the attempted murder.”
“You are not making sense, speak plainly," Zach says as Cassidy sighs.
“I am a secret agent for the CIA, I just opened a can of worms on the Mexican cartel, and right now, I am supposed to be lying low. If my face is splashed all over the media, then my family and life would be exposed and in danger.” Cassidy explains.
Zach narrowed his eyes. “Look I know that whatever it is that you are doing is hush wash, but you don't have to go that far, especially since we are going to need your help soon.” Zach said.
“You are not joking, are you?” Maisie asked when she studied Cassidy's face and saw that he was not trying to be funny.
Cassidy sighs “no, I am not. If we do put Jeffery behind bars with my testimony, we will be bringing a bigger enemy into the player's no field.”
“Then what should we do.” Zach said as he passed his hand through his hair in a rough manner, clearly agitated. “We can't just let Jeffery go freeway. He tried to kill my girlfriend for Christ's sake.”
“Calm down. We will report but give them just my side of the story. Cassidy will say that he rescued me but didn't see who threw me into the water. We will just hope that they find a way to trap Jeffery.” Maisie said as Zach took a deep breath.
“So, Jeffery will be free for now, until the police department carries out an investigation.”
“Yes, and we will point them in the right direction to hurry it up.” Cassidy said. “He took your car to dispose of, so that means that he certainly left a trail. We are just going to look for the trail and follow it.
“Okay. I love that plan.” Zach said as he reached for the phone and called the police.
“What about your phone.” Cassidy asked Maisie.
“I dropped it on the ground after I went down. I am not sure that he would remember to take care of my phone.” Maisie said worriedly "Let's just hope that he forgot and when the police come that they will go and investigate the beach immediately after taking your statement.”
“Of course, they will. The name Stephens make the police to jump and do our bidding quickly. There is always the suspicion that the person who tried to kill me last year is the one who is responsible for this so they will do all they can to make the investigation go as quickly and smoothly as possible.” Zach said as he sat down close to Maisie and wrapped a blanket around her.
“still the police will not like to investigate this case since the culprit is also a Stephen or should I not mention Jeffery's name.” Maisie asked.
“Don't," Cassidy said at the same time that Zach said “do"
Zach looked at Cassidy and shook his head in disapproval. “there is no way I will make the process that long. We will mention his name and I will tell them about what I remembered from my coma. It might be discredited but the information will be jotted.”
“I have a feeling that this issue will not go away.” Cassidy warns.
“Please. I was the one whose feelings are always right, not you.” Zach said.
"Still...” Cassidy started
“Drop the issue. We will mention his name, they will search for Maisie's phone. They will see it, and everything will be easier to solve from then on.” Zach growls at Cassidy who grudgingly went along with it.
Later when the police left, and Maisie was asleep Cassidy asked Zach why he took his occupation without many complaints.
Zach told him that he had already suspected Cassidy was a spy. And he knew that Cassidy was always going to live an eventful life and that he was mentally strained and when the whole mess with Jeffery is cleaned up then he will focus more on Cassidy and his choice of work then.
