Thirty- nine

Maisie didn't go to work on Monday, but she knew that she couldn't push it off much longer, so she went on Tuesday.

And when she saw Cathy, she tried to avoid her.

“Miss Williams.” Cathy called out as Maisie was about to turn back.

Maisie turned and looked at Cathy as she fixed a strained smile on her face. “Yes.”

“I wanted to invite you for a cookout I am having this weekend at my place.” Cathy said with a smile on her face and a glow around her.

Maisie noticed it but she was still stuck on what Cathy said, “why do you want to invite me.” Maisie asked when she could finally get her tongue to unfreeze.

“Because you are Anthony's friend.” Cathy said as if it was the most obvious thing ever.

“Since when do you care for Anthony.” Maisie asked in confusion.

Cathy looked at her weirdly. “you don't know.”

“No. What is going on?” Maisie asked “Anthony proposed to me yesterday. We have been seeing each other for two weeks.” Cathy said.

“Woah, hold up. You and Anthony had been dating for two weeks.” Maisie asked in surprise.

“Well, tomorrow will make it three weeks.” Cathy said with a smile.

“And he asked you to marry him?” Maisie asked still in shock.

“He said I was his forever.” Cathy’s cheeks went red as she said that.

Maisie could totally see Anthony saying something like that to the woman he was getting married to. But Cathy! “you said yes.” Maisie said trying to clarify.

“Of course, I said yes. I really like him. I know that you won't believe me because you think I am a bitch...” Cathy started.

“I don't think I know.” Maisie interrupted.

Cathy swallowed then continued like she was never interrupted. “Or I am not good enough for him, but we like each other, and we have a connection.”

“Having a connection is not enough. You cannot tie yourself down with one person because of the way you feel when you touch.” Maisie said angrily.

Cathy looked at Maisie and noticed the dark circles “what happened to you.”

Maisie shifted away from Cathy. “Nothing. Thank you for the invite. I will try my best to attend.” Maisie gave Cathy a tight smile as she sidestepped her then hurried on.

“You don't even know the venue.” Cathy called after her.

“I will get it from Anthony when I talk to him.” Maisie called back without slowing her pace.
