The FBI
Sarah's POV
Chief Morrison was reaching for his desk drawer when the fire alarm began to blare.
When he produced a gun, I leaped behind the chair. Everything appeared to be from a horror film because of the red emergency lights.
"Sarah," Chief Morrison said in that icy, no longer his voice. "You ought not to have inquired about your middle name."
"Because you're unaware of it!"
"Because it's irrelevant."
He aimed the firearm at me. "It's important that you accompany me to meet with The Organization."
The door was locked when I scurried to it. The fire alarm continued to blare, but nobody was responding. The entire police station seemed deserted.
"Where is everyone?" I shouted over the cacophony.
"Be careful. For the time being." Chief Morrison flashed that dreadful, ravenous grin. "But if you don't cooperate, they won't stay safe."
My hands began to shine silver. "You're not Chief Morrison, are you?"
"I am whoever I must be."
similar to Susan Cole. similar to the phony Agent Martinez. People's bodies could be taken over by the Organization.
It was Chief Morrison who fired.
I flung myself aside, and the bullet struck the wall where my head had been. His gun flew across the room as silver light exploded from my hands.
"Impressive," he uttered, unsurprised. "The Organization will be eager to learn more about you."
The fire alarm went off. There was silence.
Too silent.
"Sarah Chen!" From the corridor came a woman's voice. "This is FBI Agent Maria Santos! Are you inside?
Chief Morrison's eyes widened. "That isn't feasible. Santos isn't expected to arrive just yet.
"Yet?" I gazed at him. "You anticipated her arrival?"
Inward, the door exploded. Gun in hand, a short-haired black woman wearing an FBI jacket rushed in.
She commanded, "Avoid Detective Chen!"
Chief Morrison's hands went up. "Santos, Agent. You're ahead of schedule.
"And you are no longer Chief Morrison." Santos continued to aim her gun at him. "Get behind me, Sarah."
I remained motionless. "How can I be certain that you are an FBI agent?"
Santos looked at the phony Chief Morrison, then back at me. "Because I am aware that Elena Voss has spent months assisting you in solving cases that seem insurmountable."
My blood became icy. "How did you find out about Elena?"
"Because you two have been appearing in my files for the past five years that I've been investigating supernatural crimes."
Chief Morrison chuckled. "You don't know what you're getting into, Santos."
"I am sufficiently knowledgeable." Santos produced handcuffs. "I am aware that police officers have been taken over by The Organization. I am aware that they have been pursuing Elena. Additionally, I am aware that they desire Sarah.
"For the ritual," I replied.
Santos gave a nod. "To pilfer your skills. However, they committed one error.
"What?"
"They believed that Elena was the only supernatural being assisting law enforcement."
For a brief moment, Santos's eyes glowed gold.
My jaw dropped. "You're also not human."
"Half human. Elena was like my mom. My dad worked for the FBI. Santos grinned. "I've spent my entire life hunting The Organization."
Chief Morrison sprang for his dropped firearm.
Santos was quicker. Morrison froze like a statue as golden light blasted from her hand.
"Paralysis spell," Santos clarified. "We need to talk right now, but he'll be fine in an hour."
She faced me. "How much do you know about who you've become, Sarah?"
"I got some of Elena's power. I can now use silver light and see supernatural things.
"That's only the beginning." Santos approached Morrison's computer. "You can also spot patterns that regular people overlook, detect deception, and track supernatural killers across state lines."
"I can do that?"
"You've been carrying it out. Your case solve rate increased by 300% over the past six months as a result.
Santos began to type on the computer. The screen displayed files. images of crime scenes from various states.
"I have been keeping up with your cases, Sarah. The Hunter case, Marcus Rivera, and the college murderers. In just six months, you've apprehended more supernatural criminals than most agents do in a decade.
I gazed at the documents. "You think it's luck?"
"I assumed it was just luck. Until I discovered Elena was assisting you. Santos gave me a serious look. "Where is Elena now?"
"She's weak. Her teammates were poisoned by the Organization. She lost most of her strength.
"They desired that. to keep you apart. to make you the sole individual with superhuman skills capable of cooperating with law enforcement."
"Why?"
Santos displayed a map with red dots on it. This one had twice as many dots as the one Chief Morrison had shown me.
"Sarah, because they're constructing something. Not merely an army. a supernatural police force under their command.
I was ill. "They want people like me to replace all the cops?"
"People are loyal to you, but they also like you. People who are able to hunt supernatural creatures during the day, when the majority of them are at their most vulnerable.
"That's awful."
"It gets worse." Santos typed something else. A brand-new file appeared. "They have been using police officers who have been abducted for experiments. attempting to give them superhuman skills through artificial means.
Photos of police officers with wires fastened to their heads while strapped to tables were displayed in the file.
"Are those...?"
"Your family was among the twelve officers who vanished. Indeed.
My hands became more radiant. "Are they alive?"
"A few of them. those who made it through the trials." Santos's voice became very quiet. "They're not the same people anymore, Sarah."
"What do you mean?"
"Most people are driven insane by the artificial supernatural abilities. They turn violent and erratic. They are weapons used by the Organization.
I reflected on Detective Martinez's peculiar behavior following her possession. How she was unable to recall the events.
"I have a question for you, Agent Santos."
"What?"
"How can I tell if you're genuinely attempting to assist me? How can I be certain that this isn't another trap?
Santos gave me a long look. Then she took an unexpected action.
She rolled up her left sleeve and removed her FBI jacket.
Elena's silver symbol appeared as a scar on her arm.
"Because three years ago in Denver, Elena saved my life." I was being hunted by a vampire who had killed six people. Elena found it and put an end to it.
"Elena battled a vampire?"
"Elena battles against anything that endangers defenseless people. This includes FBI agents who are in over their heads and are half-human.
Santos rolled her sleeve back down. "Elena didn't give you power at random, Sarah. She has been getting you ready.
"For what?"
"To replace her. to take on the role of someone who, when she is unable to, hunts down supernatural killers."
I gave a headshake. "I'm not prepared for that."
"You have no other option. You are the only one who can stop The Organization since Elena is weak and they are becoming more powerful."
Santos approached Chief Morrison, who was frozen. "But you don't have to do it alone."
"What do you mean?"
In other words, I'm formally asking to collaborate with you on supernatural crimes. Local police and the FBI are cooperating.
"Is that even legal?"
"It is right now. For cases involving the paranormal, I am able to enlist local law enforcement. Santos gave me a document that looked official. "You are a unique FBI consultant because of this. You continue to work as a detective, but you also collaborate with me.
The paper was read by me. It appeared genuine, but everything else had as well.
"I must ask, Agent Santos. What is my middle name?
She grinned. "Grace. Chen, Sarah Grace. Your great-grandmother immigrated from China in 1952, and your parents named you after her.
I felt a wave of relief. She knew me, really.
"So what happens now?"
"Now we find The Organization and save your family." Santos made his way to the door. "But we have to find Elena first."
"Why?"
"Because my sources just told me." It wasn't only Elena's teammates who were weakened by the Organization.
"What do you mean?"
When Santos turned around, a worried expression filled her face.
"They took Elena twenty minutes ago, Sarah."
Everything stopped for me.
"That isn't feasible. Elena is too powerful.
"Not when she's weak because she no longer feels connected to her team. Not when she's attempting to keep the remaining members safe."
I had trouble breathing. "Where did they take her?"
"We must ascertain that. Quickly. Santos looked at her timepiece. "Because they intend to use Elena in the ritual tonight, based on my sources."
"What ritual?"
I met Santos's golden eyes.
"The one in which they murder Elena in order to give you all of her remaining authority. They then murder you in order to give their leader everything.
A text message buzzed on my phone.
My hands trembled as I gazed at it.
"We have Elena, Detective Chen. If you want to see her alive, go to the old Riverside Cemetery at midnight. Agent Santos should be brought. We also have plans for her. "The Organization"
I presented the message to Santos.
"It's a trap," she declared.
"I understand. However, we must leave anyhow.
"We might not return if we go there, Sarah."
"Elena dies if we don't go. The Organization then triumphs.
For a while, Santos was silent. She then gave a nod.
"All right. However, we won't enter unprepared. She took her phone out. "I'm requesting backup."
"More FBI agents?"
"It's better. I'm summoning all the supernatural beings who owe Elena a favor.
"How many is that?"
Santos grinned, but it wasn't a joyful one.
"Elena has been saving lives for more than a century, Sarah. She has many friends.
"Will it be enough?"
"We will soon find out. Because this message tells us that we have six hours to save Elena and prevent The Organization from carrying out their ritual."
I glanced at Chief Morrison, who was frozen, and then at the FBI badge that Santos had handed me.
"I need to tell you something about Elena's power, Agent Santos."
"What?"
"We established a lasting relationship after she shared it with me. I am able to sense her pain.
"That's excellent. You can find her.
I gave a headshake. "That isn't the issue. Th
e issue is that Elena isn't simply weak at the moment.
"What do you mean?"
As Elena's suffering permeated our relationship, my hands began to glow brighter.
She's dying, after all. Additionally, I could pass away if Elena passes away before midnight.
