The Gym

The Gym
Sarah's POV

The red button was half an inch from David's finger when all the lights went out.

"Now, Sarah!" Elena whispered in the darkness.

Just as something smashed through the high window, I leaped for David. I could hear the phony FBI agents yelling in confusion as glass rained down everywhere.

"Where are they?" Martinez let out a scream.

David and I both hit the ground hard when I tackled him in the dark. The detonator flew across the damp floor.

"Elena!" I exclaimed.

She said, "I'm here," but her voice sounded odd. feeble.

As the emergency lights came on, I noticed Elena standing close to the shattered window. However, she had a horrible appearance. She was swaying as if she might collapse at any moment, and her skin was nearly transparent.

Reaching for the detonator, David scurried across the floor.

David got there first, but I also lunged for it.

He exclaimed with triumph, "Got it!"

However, I could see the device was cracked when he held it up. When we fell, pool water had gotten inside.

"Is it still functional?" Martinez made a demand.

David hit the button. Nothing took place.

He hit it once more. Nothing has changed.

"It's broken!" Panicked, David said.

Everyone in the room was shocked by what Elena did at that point.

She chuckled.

Elena, who could hardly stand, said, "You idiots," her silver eyes flashing. "Tommy never had a bomb attached to him."

Martinez's face turned pale. "What are you talking about?"

"Martinez, I have the ability to detect explosives. David's heartbeat has nothing to do with a bomb. To frighten Sarah, you made that up.

"However, the video—"

It's not real. Most likely, it was recorded weeks ago.

I was angry and relieved at the same time. "Where exactly is my nephew?"

Elena focused and closed her eyes. "At his school, he's safe. The attack at the elementary school was also a hoax. Martinez employed actors.

David appeared perplexed. "But Martinez said—"

Elena said, "Martinez lied to you too, David." "No bombs are present. No hostages. No attack at elementary school. Everything was set up to cause Sarah to become anxious and make poor decisions.

Martinez drew a gun and aimed it at Elena. "You are a freak of the paranormal. Everything has been ruined by you.

"Have I?" Elena inquired. "Because I believe you're overlooking something crucial."

"What?"

Elena grinned and appeared strong for the first time since she had broken herself. "There are other supernatural beings in this room besides me."

I became aware of David Park's peculiar behavior at that point. His hands were beginning to shake as he gazed at Elena with wide eyes.

"David," said Martinez, "snatch Detective Chen up." We're heading out."

David, however, remained motionless. He continued to gaze at Elena.

"David!" Martinez yelled. "What's wrong with you?"

Elena's smile widened. "David is finally realizing who I am. "Are you not, David?"

David's voice was barely audible. "You're not human."

Excellent. And are you aware of what I do to individuals like you?

David began to move away from Elena. "You murder people."

"You're correct. Additionally, you killed eight innocent people.

Abruptly, David seized me by the neck and pressed a sharp object against my throat. A shattered fragment of window glass.

He yelled at Elena, "Stay back!" "I'll slit her throat!"

The glass was cutting me, and I could feel the blood running down my neck.

"David," Elena said coolly, "let her go, and I'll hasten your demise."

"No! I'm leaving this place." Keeping the glass against my throat, David began pulling me toward the door.

We were being followed by Martinez and her fictitious agents, but David was using me as a shield, so they were unable to get a good look.

I yelled, "Elena," as David pulled me into the corridor. "Avoid following us. You're not strong enough."

Elena, however, was already on the move. She appeared to be barely able to walk, but she was still keeping up with us.

David dragged me toward the exit doors through the gym. "I have my car in the parking lot. Detective, we're going for a ride."

"Where?"

"Somewhere you can't follow your supernatural girlfriend."

We stormed into the parking lot through the doors. David's large black SUV was parked directly in front of the door.

With the shattered glass aimed directly at me, he pushed me into the passenger seat and leaped behind the wheel.

Trying not to panic, I said, "David, this isn't going to work." Elena can follow us around.

"We'll check on that."

David pressed the gas pedal to start the engine. My seatbelt sliced my shoulder as we screamed out of the parking lot.

I saw Elena running out of the building in the rearview mirror. However, she was stumbling and appeared to be about to pass out.

"She can't keep up," David said, grinning maniacally. "She's too weak to chase a car, whether she's supernatural or not."

Now we were flying down the college town's main street. David was speeding through intersections and running red lights like a crazy person.

My phone began to ring. I glanced at the screen. Elena was the one.

"Answer it," David said. "Put it on speaker."

I took the call. "Elena?"

"Are you okay, Sarah?"

"For the time being. However, David is driving as if he intends to murder us both.

Elena sounded worn out. "Where are you taking her, David?"

David took the phone away from me. "Freak, somewhere special. Sarah will be more hurt there than if she died.

"What are you talking about?"

David's wild grin widened even more. "I'm taking her to see Tommy, her nephew. The actual Tommy. Not a phony video.

My blood froze. "I thought you said Tommy was safe at school, Elena."

A long silence fell. "I was mistaken, Sarah. I sense him now. David is being honest.

"Where is he?" I let out a scream.

David chuckled. Detective, Tommy is not at school. He has spent the entire time with my partner. Additionally, my partner has been ordered to kill the child if Elena follows us.

"What partner?"

Susan Cole. Do you recall her? "The person who was meant to be at the library?"

Elena's horrified voice filled the phone. Susan Cole is no longer at the college, Sarah. An hour ago, she departed.

I inquired, "Where did she go?"

Although David was still traveling at a breakneck speed, he was now leaving the city and moving toward the highway.

"She picked Tommy up from school. And she has him now.

I thought I might throw up. "David, where are you taking me?"

About twenty miles away, to an old warehouse. Your nephew and Susan are waiting there. Detective, here's the deal. Elena is free to follow us, but Susan will kill Tommy if she does. Susan kills Tommy in precisely one hour if Elena doesn't arrive.

"It's not a deal. That is simply murder.

David gave a shrug. Yes, but Elena will be destroyed by murder. She'll have to see you decide between your nephew's life and your own."

Elena's voice could be heard over the phone. "Don't listen to him, Sarah. I'll find a different way.

"There isn't another way!" David yelled into the telephone. "Elena, you are a supernatural freak who has spent years hunting down murderers. We're hunting you now. And everyone Sarah cares about is the bait.

After hanging up, David tossed the phone out the window.

We were now traveling over ninety miles per hour on the highway. Other vehicles were swerving to avoid us and honking.

"You're going to kill us both, David."

Perhaps. However, I'll at least bring you along."

I noticed it in the side mirror at that point. We were being followed by another vehicle, which was rapidly catching up.

I muttered, "Elena?"

David cursed as he glanced in his rearview mirror. "How is she doing? She was barely able to walk.

The car that was pursuing us was drawing nearer. Elena was driving, and I could see that her silver eyes were illuminating her entire face.

I realized, "She's not weak anymore." "She regained her strength."

David fully depressed the gas pedal. We reached a hundred miles per hour on our speedometer.

However, Elena's vehicle continued to close the gap between us.

"This is not possible!" David let out a scream.

Elena's car did something that was definitely not possible at that point.

It took off.

Perfectly keeping pace, Elena's car lifted off the highway and was now hovering ten feet above us.

David turned white as he peered up through the sunroof.

He muttered, "What is she?"

Elena's voice suddenly sounded as though it were coming from inside our heads.

"David, I am justice. And I'm on my way to get you."

David violently jerked the steering wheel to the right.

At a hundred miles per hour, we sped off the highway and headed directly for a concrete barrier.
