A Promise Of Love

A Promise Of Love
Chapter 23

A Promise Of Love

The flames had burned low, its dying embers casting weak shadows slithering along the broken floor of the cabin. Outside the woods were quiet, too quiet, as if the trees themselves stood waiting, holding their breath, to listen to what was to be spoken. I sat at the edge of the downed wall, knees drawn up tight against my chest, staring into the shadows. My brain spun with betrayal, fear, and exhaustion.

That's when Adrian's voice cut into the silence.

"Selene," he breathed, almost gently, as if he was careful not to break something. His eyes burned into mine, their golden light bubbling with something I had not seen before. Not just resolve. Not just anger. But hunger.

I swallowed, harder than I needed to, and dared to meet his eyes. "What is it?

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he moved closer, his movements measured, until he was only a breath from me. Pine and steel lingered on him, pungent and smoky. He just looked at me for a moment, as if scanning my soul for the courage to speak it.

Then he spoke it.

"If I fight Kael—if I fight him and win—will you give me your heart?"

The words did not sound like a person would say them at first. My chest tightened like the air had been stolen from my lungs. I blinked, staring at him, praying he would retract, that he would tell me it was a thought wrapped in desperation. But his eyes did not waver. He meant it.

My mouth fell open, but nothing came out. The fire hissed quietly in the quiet, teasing the storm brewing within me.

"Adrian…" I got out after a moment, my dry throat.

He crouched down in front of me, leaning forward so that we were nose to nose, his expression firm, but not closed. "I've had these words bottled up long enough," he admitted. "Watching you struggle, watching you break, watching you carry a burden no one should have to carry alone—it's killing me. And I can't keep quiet anymore."

My heart thudded painfully against my chest. He wasn't speaking like an Alpha anymore. He was speaking as a man. A man who had seen my wounds, my grief, my anger, and yet. wanted me.

You don't understand," I explained to him, my head shaking. My voice quaked, but it was sharp with fear. "Kael isn't like other individuals. He isn't tough, he's ruthless. He doesn't play by rules. He takes and takes until there is nothing left. If you go to him, Adrian, you'll." My voice cracked. ".you'll die."

Adrian's jaw closed, but his eyes flared. "Then let me die trying.".

I gazed at him, appalled. "Don't ever say that!"

"I must," he said, his tone harsh but pained. "Because I need you to understand what this means to me. I'm not asking for your heart for power, or pride, or right of blood. I'm asking because every fiber of me—every breath, every bone, every desire—tells me that you are mine. And if Kael believes that he can stand between us, then I'll tear him apart with my own hands."

The harshness of his words cut into me like a blade. Part of me wanted to believe him, to succumb to the tenderness and safety he offered. Another part, however, recoiled from him, frightened of hope, frightened of loss.

"You don't know what you're asking," I breathed. My knees were trembling, and I gripped them to hide it. "If you lose, Adrian… if Kael takes you from me, it will be my death. And I can't—I can't live losing someone else I…" I stopped speaking. I couldn't even manage the words.

His face smoothed, and for the first time in my life, I saw a glimpse of the Alpha beneath the armor, the man beneath the title. He reached out, tracing his fingers softly across mine. The touch was unsure, almost hesitant, yet it seared in my chest.

"For goodness' sake, Selene," he panted, "I won't break your heart. I won't let Kael take me from you. I'll obey your father in heaven, and I'll obey you on earth. But you have to trust me. You have to believe in me, even if it frightens the life out of you."

There was fire in my eyes, but I wouldn't let them shed. His words oppressed all the walls I had built inside me, at the danger of their fall.

I wanted to scream at him. Wanted to explain to him that he was crazy, idiotic, that this was lunacy. But the thing was, his words had already carved themselves into me, and part of me wanted to be believed. Wanted to hope.

"Adrian…" I trembled and broke, and shook my head. "I can't give you my heart like it's a prize to be won in some fight. It isn't that simple.".

His hand squeezed tighter around mine, his eyes blazing with determination. "Then let me make it simple. If I die, you owe me nothing. But if I succeed… Selene, give me your heart. Give me a chance to heal what Kael shattered."

The silence filled, heavy and hot. My chest shook like the air itself weighed a ton. I opened my lips to reply—

—but before words could come out of me, the woods outside were stirred by a noise.

A howl. Low and mournful and unmistakable.

My blood froze.

Adrian's head whipped toward the broken wall, his eyes narrowing, his entire body drawn tight as a strung bow about to fire. The noise came back, closer now, drifting through the trees with cold deliberation.

It was not the scream of a rogue. It was a call. A warning.

Kael's shadow was nearer than we imagined.

And then, in a sudden flash, the promise Adrian had just made—this wild vow, this asking for my heart—seemed like the first line of a war that neither of us could evade.
