The Beginning Of Something
The silence between us gaped like an open wound. His eyes didn't leave mine—storm-grey, searching, pushing into the depths of my soul where I'd buried every scar. My chest rose and fell in rapid succession, my breath shaky, my hands quivering against the sheets as though the weight of what I'd just spoken still pressed down upon me.
"He was my husband," I'd said to him, my voice barely above a whisper.
"He betrayed me.".
The words echoed in my own ears, bitter reminders of a fact I had wanted to hide but could no longer hold inside.
He just sat there, motionless, his fist clenched on his knee, as if restraining himself from saying something he wanted to—or perhaps from doing something he wanted to. When he finally spoke, his voice was guarded, careful, the way one would handle a wounded creature.
"Tell me everything."
I blinked, startled. "Everything?"
Yes," he said firmly. "If I am to understand why you wept for him, why his name tarnishes your lips even in sleep… then I need to know it all. Every drop of your pain. Every cut he made. Do not hide yourself from me, Selene. Let me see it.".
My throat tightened. No one had ever asked me that. Not even Ronan, who'd seen me broken and bleeding, who'd guided me when I was too lost to stand. No one had pushed to see the whole of my truth.
I gulped. My body trembled like speaking would fall apart at the seams. But something in his eyes held me there. He wasn't asking because he was curious. He wasn't pushing to find weakness. He was asking because he cared—strangers or not.
So I began.
"Initially… Kael was everything," I whispered, glancing at my hands. "He was light and strength. He was the man every girl dreamt of, the Alpha who carried his people proudly. And I—I loved him. With everything that I was."
My voice shook as I remembered the first nights, the first touches, the vows made under the moon. My chest seared with a bittersweet pain.
"We were married," I continued, "and I believed I'd found my forever. I gave him all of me—my body, my heart, my soul. But slowly… I began to see the shadows."
His eyebrows furrowed, but he remained silent.
"He changed," I whispered. "The man I loved turned into someone I did not recognize. He lied. He deceived. He betrayed not just me, but everything we were supposed to stand for. And when I… when I discovered the truth, it shattered me. He didn't just betray me as a wife, he betrayed me as a woman, as a Luna. He humiliated me. He left me hollow."
Tears seared my eyes, spilling despite my attempt to hold them back. "I gave him everything. And he ruined me in return."
The stranger—this Alpha whose name I still didn't know—stepped nearer, his breath uneven. I saw the way his jaw clenched, the muscle in his cheek bunching with contained fury. But his voice, when it came, was low and smooth.
"You loved him," he said. "And he burned you."
I nodded, unable to speak.
He reached out, paused, then brushed his fingers across mine. His touch was gentle, cautious, almost reverent, as though I would shatter more if he pressed too hard. His fingers made me flinch, not in fright but from the unfamiliar warmth of someone who wasn't Kael, someone who wasn't Ronan. Someone who didn't look at me with expectation or fury, but with quiet understanding.
"I don't pity you," he breathed. "I burn for you."
My eyes went wide, shocked at the intensity in his voice.
"What Kael did," he continued, his voice dropping, "is not weakness in you. It's deviance in him. You provided love, and he provided betrayal. That is his shame, not yours."
A sob ripped from my throat before I could stop it. His hand tightened on mine, keeping me in place. For the first time in so long, I didn't feel the suffocating pressure of judgment crushing me. I felt… seen.
"Why are you telling me this?" I whispered, my voice broken. "Why would you care?"
He exhaled slowly, his gaze never leaving mine. "Because I cannot watch someone drown in the wreckage of another man's sins. Because…" For the first time, his voice faltered, softer now, more vulnerable. "Because I know what it is to lose everything. And I will not stand by and watch you be devastated by what he did to you."
The air shifted between us. My heart pounded with something I couldn't name, a mix of sorrow, gratitude, and the terrifying surge of something dangerously close to hope.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
His hand shifted fully over mine now, firm, protective. His eyes blazed with a vow I hadn't expected.
"I will aid you, Selene," he told her. "Whatever it takes. Whether you desire revenge, or merely peace—I will be at your side. You don't have to struggle alone anymore."
The room tilted again, but not due to sorrow or booze this time. His words struck deep, unraveling something inside of me. I'd spent so long trying to hold myself together, clinging to survival with Ronan at my side, haunted by Kael's ghost. To have someone else—someone who owed me nothing—offer help, it broke me in a different way.
Tears flowed freely now, and I made no attempt to stem them. I leaned forward, my forehead nearly touching his shoulder, and whispered through the sobs, "Why? Why would you endanger yourself for me? You don't even know me."
He lifted his hand, gently brushing a tear from my cheek with his thumb. "Perhaps not. But I see pain when I look at you. And I know you don't have to face it alone."
The sincerity in his voice couldn't be questioned. It scared me, since I'd forgotten the sensation of being believed in, of being trusted without an agenda.
I drew back, searching for his face. "You mean that?"
"I swear it." His eyes gleamed with something fierce, something lethal. "Whoever hurt you… whoever betrayed you… if you want justice, if you want vengeance—I will give it to you."
The promise was like thunder in my ears. A dangerous pledge. A new loyalty. And the beginning of something that could change everything.
But even as his words closed around me like a cloak, there was a shadow in my heart, for I knew Kael. And Kael never gave up what he believed was his.
And if this new Alpha became friends with me, stood with me, then he would become a target as well.
The thought sent a shiver down my spine. I breathed, hardly above a whisper, "Then you've chosen a dangerous path."
His lips formed a small smile, yet his eyes were as hard as steel. "Danger has never frightened me."
I couldn't respond before the buzz of my phone on the nightstand shattered the fragile silence between us. The screen lit up, and I froze, reading the name.
Kael.
My breath caught, my body stiffening, as if the ghost I'd just mentioned had reached out from the shadows to remind me he wasn't a ghost at all, but flesh and blood, and he was waiting.
The Alpha's eyes flicked to the phone, then back to me. His jaw tensed. His grip on my hand tightened.
"Answer it," he snarled, his voice low and commanding. "Let's hear what your traitor has to say."
And in that moment, with the phone buzzing in the quiet, I knew this wasn't my secret to bear anymore.
It was the beginning of something far more dangerous.
