###The Wolf’s Mask###
(Adelina's POV)
Mira spoke first. “We should attack before they do. Strike at the border posts, cut off supplies.”
Brin shook her head. “We don’t have the numbers. The Council’s Guard could crush us before we reached Silver Keep.”
I raised a hand. “Enough. We won’t win this with brute strength.”
All eyes turned to me.
“We win this by forcing Sylvia into the light. The Blood Summit will be her stage. Let her believe she’s writing my death. I’ll make sure the world sees who truly wears the wolf’s mask.”
A murmur spread through the gathered rogues. Hope, disbelief, defiance it was all there.
Caleb stepped forward. “If you’re going to do this, you’ll need to pass the border alive. I can get you there, but it won’t be easy. Once you step into Silver Keep, you’ll be bound by the Council’s laws again. Even the Matron blood won’t shield you forever.”
I nodded. “Then we make the time I have count.”
Dax tried to stand, wincing with the effort. “I’ll go with you.”
I looked at him really looked. The once-arrogant Alpha heir now trembling from the poison his mother had fed him. Yet still he tried to rise.
“No,” I said softly. “You’ve done enough bleeding for her. Rest.”
He shook his head weakly. “You don’t understand. If she sees me with you, it’ll break her illusion. She’s been using me as proof of loyalty of her control. If I walk beside you, even for a moment, her empire cracks.”
Caleb put a hand on his shoulder. “You can barely stand.”
“I’ll crawl if I have to,” Dax hissed.
The sheer stubbornness of him made something twist painfully inside me.
Mira leaned in. “Adelina, if he’s willing—”
“I said no,” I cut her off. “If he dies on that road, she wins again.”
Dax’s eyes met mine, wounded and fierce. “And if you die without me, who wins then?”
The silence that followed was sharp enough to cut air.
I turned away before he could see the answer in my face.
That night, as the last fires burned low, I found Caleb standing alone at the ridge, staring at the stars.
“You should rest,” I said quietly.
He didn’t turn. “Can’t.”
I joined him, watching the faint shimmer of the river below. “You’ve risked everything coming here.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
He hesitated, then said, “Because I’m tired of watching wolves destroy each other in the name of purity. Because I believe in what you’re building even if you don’t yet.”
I looked at him then, really looked. The scar running along his jaw, the tired set of his shoulders, the quiet strength that had always been there, hidden beneath diplomacy.
“Be careful what you believe in,” I murmured. “It might burn with me.”
His eyes softened. “Then I’ll burn beside it.”
For a heartbeat, the air between us was heavy with something unspoken something that didn’t belong to war or politics, but to old pain and fragile hope.
Then the wind shifted.
A raven’s cry echoed from the trees, sharp and urgent. Mira appeared moments later, breathless.
“Alpha,” she said, “you need to see this.”
We followed her back to the clearing. There, in the center, lay another parchment this one pinned to the ground with a silver knife.
The seal was darker this time, the wax nearly black.
I picked it up and read.
> To the pretender Adelina Vale,
You may run to the ends of the earth, but you cannot escape the judgment of the Council.
The Blood Summit convenes in two nights. Attend if you dare.
Come alone.
High Matron Sylvia of Silver Keep.
Beneath the signature was a faint smear of blood. Dax’s blood.
My fingers curled around the parchment. “She’s daring me to come.”
Caleb exhaled. “She wants a public execution.”
“No,” I said slowly. “She wants a spectacle.”
Mira frowned. “What’s the difference?”
I lifted my gaze toward the rising moon. “One ends in death. The other ends in revelation.”
The moonlight gleamed against my skin, cold and resolute.
“She wants the world watching,” I whispered. “Then let them watch.”
Sylvia’s war decree officially brands Adelina as a traitor.
Caleb reveals the Blood Summit and offers a dangerous plan.
Dax insists on joining her, deepening emotional stakes.
Ends with Sylvia’s blood-signed invitation a trap and a test of power.
