Chapter 36 The Abyss Stirs
Sienna's pulse raced in her chest as she crushed her body against the cold, sharp rocks and tried to catch her breath. The force had knocked her to the ground, but she couldn't think about the pain since she was too scared and confused. Ryder's shape, which was now a shadow in the dark, was still fresh in her thoughts. His empty apology echoed in her mind like a ghost, taunting her with doubt.
"Ryder..." she said to herself, as a single tear fell down her cheek. But what had happened to him? She had hoped that by following him here and looking for him in this dangerous jungle, she could save him. But now it looked like the darkness had already taken him. And whatever it was that had taken over him, she couldn't combat it with just steel. The ground shook less and less, but Sienna stayed still,
staring at the empty space where Ryder had been. Had the abyss really eaten him whole? For a brief instant that made her heart stop, she thought that the dark hole had transported him to a completely different realm, one where the lines between life and death no longer mattered. "Your Majesty!" Valen's voice cut through the fog in her head, and she woke up. She struggled to get up, but the world twisted around her. Her fingers brushed against the ground, feeling the electricity still crackling beneath the surface, like if the forest itself was alive and eager to eat them all.
"Valen..." she said, her voice hoarse from the fall and the stress of trying to figure things out. "Where is he?" What went wrong? Valen was now kneeling next to her with his hand on her shoulder and breathing fast and shallow. It was evident that the magic had an effect on him, yet he was getting better faster than she was. But the sight in his eyes said more than words could: terror. He was scared. Valen remarked in a low, serious voice, "He's gone."
"That power... it was too much. No man could live through it. "No..." Sienna muttered, shaking her head in disbelief. "No, I won't accept that." But seeing the blackness spreading from the empty space where Ryder had stood made her doubt her own strength. The chasm had gotten bigger, and its borders were black and slippery, like ink spreading over paper. It looked like it could swallow anything in its way. Valen's was anxiety as he said, "We can't stay here."
"This magic will eat everything, including us, if it expands much farther." The soldiers were starting to get up, even though they were still hurt from the blow. They were hurt, some worse than others, but they moved like skilled soldiers. But their eyes, which were wide with fear and mistrust, revealed a different narrative. They realized what they were up against now. This wasn't just a fight. This was more worse than any opponent they had ever faced. Sienna looked around, and her eyes fell on the void again. It was empty now. There was no trace of Ryder.
It was just a huge, unnatural darkness that appeared to eat up all the light around it. "Ryder..." Sienna said again, her voice breaking. Valen gently put a hand on Sienna's shoulder and stated, "He's not there anymore." "We have to go." Now. Before this place eats us all up. Sienna turned away and looked down at the ground below her. She was already making up her mind, and her thoughts were racing with Ryder, the symbol on his hand, and the dark entity that had abducted him. The journey she had taken to find him and figure out what had happened to him had brought them to this point.
She had to keep going. But where would they go? They couldn't fight the enchantment that was here. It had to be halted before it got worse. But to stop it, Sienna would have to face something much worse than she had ever thought possible. A strength that couldn't be reasoned with, a force that would eat all in its path without compassion. Valen shook his head and moved closer.
"We have no choice. If you keep on this way, it will simply do more damage. You have to let go. Sienna's hands turned into fists as the weight of his words hit home. But she still couldn't let go. Not when Ryder was still out there, lost in this darkness. She had to know what had happened to him. To do that, she had to face whatever was at the center of this place. She took a deep breath, straightened her spine, and looked Valen in the eye with a look of steel determination. "I won't leave him," she said.
"We go even further. Deep into the woods. I need to learn what is drawing him in. Valen opened his mouth to complain, but she stopped him with just one look. He understood that once Sienna made up her mind, there was no going back. "Get ready," Sienna said in a strong voice. "We go ahead." The soldiers looked at each other warily, but they didn't fight. The only thing left to do was follow orders. As they went farther into the woods, the trees seemed to press in on them. Their gnarled branches made a canopy so thick that it blocked out the last bits of light.
The air got colder and the dark energy got heavier, as if they were heading into the middle of a nightmare that had been forgotten. The deeper they went, the more Sienna could feel it: a pull, an unseen force pulling her onward. Ryder was there, just out of her reach, like he was still alive but lost in the nothingness of the abyss. But what had he taken? And could she get him back? The road got smaller as the shadows got darker. The dark enchantment of the woodland was meant to confound and mislead anyone who ventured to enter. It changed the way people thought, changed their will, and changed reality itself.
Sienna, on the other hand, wasn't scared. Not yet. She noticed a faint glow ahead, like the final breath of a dying star. She knew this was the forest's heart. The place where the power that had abducted Ryder came from. She also understood that she would have to face whatever was inside if she wanted to save him. The soldiers were suddenly unsure, and you could tell they were scared. But Sienna kept going, taking them into the unknown, ready to meet the darkness head-on. There was no way to go back. Ryder was there. And the entity that had taken him was also waiting. The dim light got brighter, lighting the path ahead. Sienna sped up, her heart racing in her chest.
She didn't know what was going to happen, but she wouldn't turn away. Not right now. Never. She could hear things, voices, and soft murmurs in the breeze as the light got stronger. Were they genuine, or did the forest's strange magic make them up? She had no idea. But one thing was for sure: they were calling her. Calling her to come closer, deeper into the darkness. The brightness reached its highest point, and then everything stopped. The woods were quiet. It was impossible to stand the tension in the air. And Sienna, who was poised at the brink of the unknown, felt the weight of the moment settle over her like a shroud of fate. Everything would depend on what she did next.
