Chapter 33 Secrets Beneath the Surface
It felt heavy, its weight didn't only symbolizing the kingdom she had inherited, but the burdens and mysteries that came along with it. Her reflection stared back at her, but she wasn’t seeing her own face. It was Ryder’s. The shadows of his past, his pain, and the darkness that clung to him all whispered in the back of her mind. How could she possibly save him when she barely understood the curse he bore?
There was a knock at the door, breaking her reverie. She turned swiftly, her pulse quickening. Her mind was too clouded to think clearly, but there was no time to think. Whoever was on the other side of that door had come to deliver something, and Sienna had a sinking feeling that it wasn’t good news.
“Enter,” she called out,
The door creaked open, and Sir Valen stepped into the room, his expression somber. Behind him, two soldiers waited with uneasy expressions, as if they too knew as well what was good for the kingdom.
“Your Majesty,” Sir Valen began, his voice quiet but urgent, “I’ve just received word from the eastern border. The Dark One’s followers have been seen. They’re moving closer.”
Sienna’s heart clenched, her chest tightening as the reality of the situation settled in. She had been hoping for more time, time to search for Ryder, to understand the curse that had twisted him, but it seemed that hope was slipping through her fingers.
“Tell me everything,” she said, her voice more forceful than she had intended. She had to stay composed. The kingdom needed her strength, her resolve.
Valen hesitated for a moment before continuing. “The reports are unclear, but we believe they’ve already infiltrated some of the border towns. There are signs of dark magic at work, strange occurrences, people vanishing in the night, the land itself growing cold and barren.” He paused, glancing over his shoulder at the soldiers. “The whispers are growing louder, Your Majesty. They believe the Dark One is near.”
Sienna’s mind raced. The Dark One’s return was no longer a distant threat, no longer a legend. It was real, and it was happening right now. She could feel the weight of it pressing down on her, suffocating the air from the room.
“What are we doing to stop them?” she asked, her voice tight with resolve.
“We’re fortifying the borders,” Valen replied. “But it’s only a matter of time before they break through. The magic they wield is ancient, and we do not know its full extent. We need to prepare for war, Your Majesty.”
Sienna’s hand clenched into a fist at her side. War. The very word seemed foreign, something she has never truly imagined she would have to experience. The kingdom had always been peaceful, a place of harmony, where prosperity reigned. But that peace was slipping away right infront of her
“We cannot let them reach the capital,” she said, her voice resolute. “I will not stand idly by while the kingdom crumbles under their influence.”
“We’re already making preparations to evacuate the city, just in case,” Valen continued. “But there’s something else… something that I think you need to know.” He hesitated again, as if choosing his next words carefully.
Sienna felt a knot form in her stomach. “What is it?”
Valen glanced at the soldiers once more, his gaze sharp. “We’ve received word that Ryder has been seen. Not far from here, on the outskirts of the capital.”
The name sent a shock through her, like a lightning strike to her chest. “Where? What do you mean, he has been seen?”
“Reports are not stable, but we believe he’s been hiding in the shadows, watching. He’s not yet approached anyone directly, but his presence is undeniable. The question is, why has he returned now? And what does he want?”
Sienna’s mind went blank. Ryder, the man she had once loved, the man who had vanished from her life without explanation, was now lurking in the shadows of the kingdom. But for what purpose? Was he trying to give them warning ? Or was he a part of the chaos that was brewing?
“I have to find him,” Sienna said firmly, determination rising within her. “We need to speak with him. I need answers. We cannot afford to wait any longer.”
Valen’s face tightened with concern. “Your Majesty, I know you really need to find Ryder, but we can't allow you to go. The Dark One’s forces are closing in, and you are the last line of defense. You are the most important person to us”
“I know,” Sienna replied, her voice quiet but sad. “But I also know that if Ryder is truly back, if he is connected to the prophecy, then he holds the answers we need. I can’t do this alone. I can’t save the kingdom without him.”
Valen’s eyes flickered with something, concern, perhaps, or fear. But he nodded, slowly, in agreement. “Then we will search for him, Your Majesty. But you must promise me one thing.”
“What?” she asked, her brow furrowing.
“You must promise me that you will not let your emotions cloud your judgment,” Valen said, his voice grave. “Ryder is a part of this, but he is not the only part. The Dark One’s influence is growing stronger every day. You cannot let your past with him blind you to the greater threat.”
Sienna’s chest tightened. She knew Valen was right. The pull of the past was strong, the memories she shared with Ryder too vivid, too real to be forgotten. But she had a kingdom to save, and she can't let her feeling override her
“I promise,” she said, her voice steady.
Valen gave a sharp nod. “Then we begin the search immediately. I will send word to the scouts. We will find him.”
Sienna nodded, her heart is heavy with what is laying ahead. She need to find Ryder. She had to understand what had happened to him, and why he had returned now, when the kingdom was on the brink of destruction. But as she turned to leave the room, she felt a strange range, as if the shadows themselves were watching her, waiting for her to make her move. Something was wrong she said. The air was thick with an impending storm. And Sienna knew that the battle for her kingdom, and her soul, was just beginning.
