Chapter 29 The Secret Door
Sienna’s heart thudded against her chest as her vision slowly returned. She felt herself lying on the cold stone floor, her body is weak. It took a moment before she managed to force her eyelids open, the dim light of her chamber casting everything in a ghostly hue. She blinked several times, trying to focus. Everything felt... wrong.
But she wasn’t alone.
It was a voice she didn’t recognize but also couldn’t forget. No, not now, she thought.
She swallowed, her voice weak but defiant. "Who are you?"
The figure’s face remained hidden in the shadows, but the cold, the aura was sure. “You know who I am.”
Suddenly, there was a sharp intake of breath, and Ryder’s voice cut through the tension. “Sienna?” He pushed past the figure, concern written across his face, but he quickly shifted when he saw the stranger looming above her. “What the hell is this?”
The figure stepped back slightly, allowing Ryder to approach. His eyes flickered toward Sienna, and she felt a rush of relief wash over her at the sight of him. But that didn’t stop the rising sense of dread that lingered.
“Who are you?” Ryder asked again, his voice lowering in warning.
The figure stepped forward, his voice no longer a mere whisper. “A messenger. And I’m here to warn you both.”
Sienna tried to sit up, struggling against the pain that shot through her limbs. "Warn us about what?" she demanded, her voice coming out hoarse and ragged.
The figure’s lips curled slightly into something between a smirk and a sneer. “You think the Council is the only force working against you? You haven’t seen the true danger yet.”
Ryder narrowed his eyes. “What are you talking about?”
Before the stranger could respond, Sienna's vision swirled again, and she felt the power surge within her, stronger than before, as if something was calling to her from deep within her chest. She needed to think, needed to act, but her body felt like a prison.
The stranger, sensing the shift in her energy, glanced over his shoulder and nodded to Ryder. “You need to leave. Now. Both of you.”
Ryder shot a glance at Sienna, his face full of confusion and concern, but there was nothing he could do. The stranger’s words were sharp, final.
“Not until I know what’s going on,” Ryder snapped, moving protectively in front of Sienna.
The stranger raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a sinister smile. “Very well, then. You’ll regret that decision.”
Ryder rushed forward, grabbing her arm, but the stranger’s power flung him back with brutal force. He hit the ground hard, gasping for air.
“Stay back,” the stranger warned, his voice like ice. “This isn’t your fight.”
Sienna’s head swam. The energy within her was uncontrollable, surging and crashing against her like waves. The whispers of the First Queen echoed louder than ever before, urging her to accept the power, to make of use it.
It’s only a matter of time, the voice cooed in her mind. Surrender. Let me guide you.
Sienna clenched her teeth. She fought to keep the darkness at bay, but it was like trying to hold back the tide with her bare hands. Her body burned with the energy that crackled through her veins. She didn’t want this. She didn’t want to become a tool of destruction.
But the stranger was pushing her, urging her to succumb. She could feel it in every fiber of her being, he knew what she was capable of. And he wanted her to unleash it.
“You don’t want to do this,” Ryder said, struggling to get back on his feet.
But the figure merely watched them both, unmoved. “I’m not here to give you a choice. I’m here to show you what lies beneath.”
Ryder’s confusion deepened. “What are you talking about? What do you know about her? About us?”
The figure stepped closer to Sienna, his voice cold and commanding. “Everything. You’re not the first, you know. Not even close. You’re just another pawn in a much larger game.”
Sienna’s heart thudded. What game? What was he talking about?
The stranger seemed to notice her shift in attention, his eyes narrowing with a knowing glint. “You feel it, don’t you? The pull. The need to control it. But the truth is, you don’t control anything, not yet. The hunger will consume you, and when it does, nothing will stop it.”
Ryder took a step forward, his voice tense. “You’ve said enough. Now, tell us who you are, or I’ll, ”
“Don’t threaten me,” the stranger interjected smoothly, his gaze unwavering. “You’re out of your depth, warrior.”
The room seemed to grow colder with every word.Sienna felt the weight of the energy building inside her, the hunger pressing at the edges of her mind. But then, something else shifted, A presence stirred within the depths of the room.Sienna’s breath caught in her throat. “What... What is that?”
The stranger’s eyes flickered to the far wall of the chamber, where something seemed to pulse with an otherworldly light. Slowly, as if giving them both a chance to comprehend the significance, he spoke.
“A door is opening.”
And with those words, the stone wall at the far end of the room trembled.
Sienna felt a cold draft through the room, the temperature high. She looked at the wall, her heart beat as a hidden panel slowly shifted, A heavy silence fell over the chamber as the sound of grinding stone echoed through the stillness.
The figure stepped back, his eyes locked onto the now-visible door. “There. That’s the way.”
“What’s in there?” Ryder demanded, still recovering from the force of the stranger’s earlier attack.
The stranger gave no response, only gesturing toward the door.
Sienna took a hesitant step forward. Her heart beat in her chest, the hunger gnawing at her insides. Whatever lay behind that door, she knew it was no accident. She could feel the weight of its significance.
The figure turned, his lips curling into a tight smile. “You’ll find your answers there.”
Without another word, he vanished into the shadows, leaving Ryder and Sienna alone once more.
Ryder glanced at Sienna, concern etched on his face.“Are you okay?”
But Sienna’s gaze was fixed on the door. But something, something deep inside her, urged her forward. Her hand reached out slowly, The moment she touched it, a jolt of power shot through her,
She pulled her hand back, her breath shallow. “I have to go in,” she whispered.
Ryder hesitated, his eyes still wary, but there was no stopping her now. She couldn’t ignore the pull. She couldn’t fight the hunger inside her any longer.
The door swung open, and the darkness beyond seemed to call her name.
