Chapter 188 ONE-HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-EIGHT
Chapter 188 ONE-HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-EIGHT
“How long?”
“You've been unconscious for three weeks and approximately three days,” the doctor answered, writing something down on the clipboard he had in his hands. “You're lucky, you know. Most people end up in a coma for a month or more… and some die, but you're alive, that counts for something.”
Three weeks!
She wanted to stand but couldn't, her entire body felt weak. Hearing that there was a probability she wouldn't have survived caused goosebumps to rise on her skin.
Her eyes darted around the room, searching for him but he was nowhere to be found.
“Doctor, where's my hus— where's the Don please? Alessandro Moretti.”
“He left.”
“What?”
“No… don't you worry. You’ve got another special visitor.”
She shouldn't worry? She didn't want anyone else. She needed to see him.
“He… he hasn't been here?”
“He has. In fact, he got you all the flowers you're looking at. He brought one every single day for three weeks. We had to take some out. It wouldn't be good to have the hospital room turned into a stuffy place. He slept in here everyday, and refused to leave even when I asked him to. But, when you woke up last night—half conscious, he was by your side. He only left this morning ma'am, said you wouldn't like to see him when you're awake. So he dropped those off instead.” She looked towards the direction the doctor's gaze shifted to, and just beside her… on the bed, was a large file, a white envelope, and a briefcase on the floor.
“Don't stress yourself too much. Tap the button beside you if you need anything.”
She nodded slowly, and after checking the drip and a few other things, the doctor left. Isabelle managed to sit up straight despite the pain she felt all over. Hands still shaking, she got hold of the file and envelope.
She opened the file first, going through the papers. He signed. She looked at his signature on every single page, and it felt like a knife was in her chest. It hurt so much seeing his signature on every page, as well as knowing he wasn't ever going to come back. He wasn't here.
It was what she wanted after all.
So why did it hurt so bloody much?
Her eyes were stinging now, tears threatening to fall any moment from now. She dropped the file on her thigh and directed her attention to the envelope. Tearing the envelope, a card slipped out and a note followed after. She didn't bother looking at the card the moment she noticed his writing on the note.
“Firecracker, if you're probably reading this then it means you're awake, and that makes me so happy. You know, yesterday when you stirred a bit, my fucking heart almost jumped out of my chest.”
She laughed a little because laughing brought her a little pain in her sides, then she rolled her eyes.
When did he get this dramatic?
She returned back to the note…
“I know you're probably rolling your eyes at that, but it's the truth. I've been so fucking scared, mia cara. So fucking terrified. I was afraid that if I left your sight for a moment you might never come back. So I stayed, I know you would be angry if you find out I stayed, instead of leaving you alone like you asked but I couldn't… I couldn't leave you alone. When the doctor said you would be awake properly today, I fled like a fucking coward. I couldn't bear to see the look on your face when you find out that I couldn't protect you.
You're right.
I'm not worthy of being your husband.
So, I signed the divorce papers. I'm letting you have you life back, on your own terms and conditions.
I killed my father for you, mia cara. He was the one who orchestrated the attack on you in Newyork. I could have been in control… I know that I could have, but I lost it when I realized that you were probably scared and alone that period and it just didn't sit well with me.
He's in a better place, paying for his misdeeds, and I don't feel guilty at all sending him there.
I got you a new phone, so you can start your life anew. I won't bother you, I promise. If you ever need help… I know you don't want to have anything to do with me, so I saved Nicholas and Luciano’s number on your phone. You seem more comfortable with them than the others. Don't worry, they won't tell me you ever called. I made them swear to secrecy because I want you to have your privacy. The card… is for you. For a new house, a new apartment… anywhere you want to be, whatever you want to shop, please, use the card. It's unlimited.
And the cash in the briefcase is for you as well.
Take care, tesoro.”
She clutched the note to her chest as her heart broke into a million little pieces.
She was finally free, but why did she feel like she was suffocating all over?
⛓–⛓–⛓–⛓
“Hey… sssh… it's okay, cry it all out. That way you'll feel all better,” Sophia consoled, as Isabelle held onto her tightly.
“I don’t understand Izzy, you wanted this, didn't you? He gave you what you wanted. He divorced you, why the sudden tears?”
“I know,” she admitted. “I know that's what I want. But why don't I feel so good about it? Why do I feel so horrible. It feels like my life is incomplete. I don't know, Soph… I just don't know.”
Sophia tilted her head up to meet hers, “Look at me. Look at me Izzy. You love him… you still love him, and if you do… if you can't live without him, then get back together. Honestly, I hate seeing you like this. I hate having to see you all broken and shaken up.”
Isabelle gave her head a little shake, “I can't… I can't go back to him. It's complicated, I don't know but it's really complicated.”
“Oh my precious bananas! If this is what love is, I don't think I want to fall in love,” Sophia said, throwing her hands up in the air.
“You're silly.” Isabelle laughed, wiping her cheeks. Pausing for a moment, “You know, I really missed you. I wish… I wish I could have told you where I was, that way you wouldn't have had to worry. I’m so sorry that I didn’t. I’m so sorry that you have to hear everything now.”
“I missed you so freaking much, Izzy. It doesn't matter. You’re here now… safe, and that's what matters to me. You should have seen Alessandro. He was completely out of his mind… totally losing it.”
Isabelle looked away. “Can we not? Can we not talk about him? It's better that way.”
Sophia snuggled up towards her. “Anything you say, ma’am. Your wish is my command.”
They both laughed at that statement, the mood lightening up a bit, but a piece of her still yearned… it still yearned for him.
