Chapter Nineteen: Betrayal
Chapter Nineteen : Betrayal
Elena’s POV
The DeLuca estate felt like a prison. Every room, every hallway, reminded me of Lorenzo. His kisses burned in my mind. I wanted him. I didn’t trust him. My heart was torn, and I couldn’t escape it. The Moretti threat made everything worse. My name written in blood on their warehouse wall haunted me. Giuliana was behind it. She wanted me gone. I felt her shadow everywhere.
I stayed in my room all morning. I couldn’t face the art studio. Painting used to calm me, but now it felt pointless. My hands shook when I thought of Lorenzo’s touch, his lips, his promise to protect me. I wanted to believe him, but Giuliana’s betrayal and his secrets held me back. I was stuck, caught between desire and fear.
A knock at my door made my heart jump. “Who is it?” I asked.
“It’s Sophia,” she said, her voice soft.
I opened the door. Sophia stood there, her face pale. Her eyes were wide with worry. “Elena, something’s wrong,” she said.
My stomach dropped. “What happened?”
She stepped inside, closing the door. “One of Lorenzo’s men is missing,” she said. “Luca. He didn’t come back from a job last night.”
I frowned. “Missing? What does that mean?”
She lowered her voice. “They think the Morettis took him. It’s a message. They’re not stopping.”
Fear gripped me. I remembered the blood on the wall. My name. Now this. “Does Lorenzo know?” I asked.
She nodded. “He’s in his office. He’s angry. Scared, too, I think.”
I sat on the bed, my hands shaking. “Why is this happening? Because of me?”
Sophia sat beside me. “It’s not your fault, Elena. The Morettis want power. You’re just… part of their plan.”
I looked away, my throat tight. “Giuliana’s plan,” I said. “She hates me.”
Sophia touched my arm. “Lorenzo won’t let her hurt you. He’s doing everything he can.”
I pulled away. “I don’t know if I can believe that. Not after everything.”
She sighed. “He cares about you. I see it. Even if you don’t.”
I didn’t answer. Her words made my chest ache. I wanted to trust Lorenzo, but the memory of his kiss mixed with my fear of Giuliana. It was too much. “I need to talk to him,” I said, standing.
Sophia frowned. “Are you sure?”
I nodded. “I can’t hide anymore.”
I found Lorenzo in his office. He stood by the window, staring outside. His shoulders were tense, his hands in fists. Marco and Antonio were there, talking in low voices. They stopped when I walked in.
Lorenzo turned. His eyes met mine, dark and stormy. “Elena,” he said. “What are you doing here?”
I crossed my arms. “Sophia told me about Luca. Why didn’t you?”
He sighed, rubbing his face. “I didn’t want to scare you.”
I laughed, sharp. “Scare me? My name was written in blood, Lorenzo. I’m already scared.”
He stepped toward me, his face tight. “I’m handling it. We’re looking for Luca.”
I shook my head. “That’s not enough. The Morettis are coming for me. For us. And you’re still keeping secrets.”
Marco cleared his throat. “Boss, maybe she should know.”
Lorenzo glared at him. “Stay out of this, Marco.”
“No,” I said, stepping closer. “Tell me. What’s going on?”
Lorenzo hesitated, then spoke. “The Morettis didn’t just take Luca. They left something. A note.”
My heart raced. “What did it say?”
He looked at me, his eyes heavy. “It said, ‘Give us the girl, or Luca dies.’”
The room spun. I grabbed the desk to steady myself. “Me?” I whispered. “They want me?”
Lorenzo’s jaw clenched. “They’re not getting you. I won’t let them.”
I stared at him, fear and anger mixing. “Why me? What do they want?”
He stepped closer, his voice low. “They think you’re my weakness. They think taking you will break me.”
His words hit me hard. I saw something in his eyes—fear, but also something deeper. It made my chest tight. I wanted to scream, to run, but his gaze held me. “Am I?” I asked, my voice shaking. “Your weakness?”
He didn’t answer right away. His hand reached out, brushing my arm. His touch was warm, electric. I didn’t pull away. “You’re not weak,” he said. “But you’re… everything.”
My breath caught. The air between us was heavy, charged. I felt the pull again, that dangerous want. His fingers lingered on my arm, soft but firm. My skin burned. I hated how much I wanted him closer.
“Lorenzo,” I said, my voice weak. “Don’t.”
He stepped closer, his body inches from mine. His eyes were dark, full of need. “I can’t help it,” he said. “I see you, and I forget everything else.”
My heart pounded. I felt his heat, his strength. My body leaned toward him, betraying me. His hand moved to my face, cupping my cheek. His thumb brushed my lip, slow, gentle. I shivered, my eyes closing. “We can’t,” I whispered.
“Then stop me,” he said, his voice rough. He leaned in, his lips brushing mine. It wasn’t a kiss, not yet—just a touch, a promise. My hands found his chest, gripping his shirt. I wanted to push him away. I wanted to pull him closer.
I didn’t stop him. His lips pressed against mine, soft at first, then deeper. The kiss was slow, burning. His hands slid to my waist, pulling me against him. I felt his heart beating, fast like mine. My arms wrapped around his neck, my fingers in his hair. The world faded—Giuliana, the Morettis, the note. It was just us, just this.
His lips moved to my neck, warm and soft. I gasped, my body trembling. “Lorenzo,” I said, my voice shaky. His hands tightened on my hips, pressing me closer. I felt his want, his need. It matched mine. For a moment, I forgot everything else.
Then the note flashed in my mind. Give us the girl. I pulled back, breathless. “No,” I said, stepping away. “We can’t do this.”
Lorenzo’s eyes were dark, his breath heavy. “Elena,” he said, reaching for me.
I shook my head, tears burning. “They want me, Lorenzo. Because of you. And you… you make me feel things I don’t want to feel.”
He looked hurt, his hands falling. “I’m trying to protect you,” he said. “I’d die before I let them touch you.”
His words broke something in me. I wanted to believe him. I wanted to fall into his arms. But fear stopped me. “I don’t know how to trust you,” I said. “Not after Giuliana. Not with this.”
He nodded, slow. “I’ll prove it,” he said. “I won’t stop until you’re safe.”
He left, the door closing behind him. I sank into a chair, my body shaking. The kiss lingered, making my heart ache. I wanted him so much, but I was scared. Scared of him, of the Morettis, of myself.
That afternoon, a new threat came. I was in the garden, trying to clear my head. The roses were bright, but they didn’t calm me. Marco found me, his face grim. “Elena, you need to come inside,” he said.
I frowned. “Why?”
He glanced around, nervous. “We found something. In the estate.”
My heart stopped. “What?”
“A package,” he said. “It was left at the gate. It’s… bad.”
I followed him inside, my stomach tight. Lorenzo was in the foyer, holding a small box. His face was pale, his eyes angry. Antonio and another man stood nearby, tense.
“What is it?” I asked, my voice shaking.
Lorenzo looked at me. “Don’t,” he said, but I stepped forward.
“Show me,” I said.
He hesitated, then opened the box. Inside was a necklace—my necklace. The one my mother gave me before she died. It was stained with red, like blood. A note was tucked beside it. I grabbed it, my hands shaking.
It read: We know where you are. Give up, or she pays.
I dropped the note, my knees weak. “How did they get this?” I whispered. “It was in my room.”
Lorenzo’s jaw clenched. “They got inside,” he said. “Someone let them in.”
I stared at him, fear turning to anger. “Inside? You said this place was safe!”
He stepped toward me, his voice low. “It was. Someone betrayed us.”
“Who?” I asked, my voice rising. “One of your men? Or is it Giuliana again?”
His eyes darkened. “I don’t know yet. But I’ll find out.”
I shook my head, tears falling. “This is your world, Lorenzo. Your enemies. And I’m the one they want.”
He grabbed my shoulders, his touch firm. “I won’t let them hurt you,” he said. “I swear it.”
His hands were warm, steady. I wanted to lean into him, to feel safe. But the necklace, the note—they screamed danger. I pulled away. “Your promises don’t mean anything,” I said. “Not when they’re in my room.”
He looked like I’d slapped him. “Elena, I—”
“No,” I said, stepping back. “Fix this, Lorenzo. Or I’m gone.”
I walked away, my heart pounding. His touch lingered, mixing with my fear. I wanted him. I needed him. But I couldn’t stay if his world was going to destroy me.
That night, I stayed in my room. The necklace sat on my dresser, a reminder of the threat. I couldn’t sleep. Every noise made me jump. The Morettis were close—too close. And someone inside the estate was helping them. I didn’t know who to trust.
There was a knock at my door. My heart raced. “Who is it?” I called.
“It’s me,” Lorenzo said.
I opened the door. He stood there, his shirt loose, his eyes tired but fierce. “I need to talk to you,” he said.
I let him in, my body tense. “What now?” I asked.
He closed the door, stepping close. “We found something,” he said. “A camera. In the hallway near your room.”
My blood ran cold. “A camera? They’re watching me?”
He nodded. “We think it’s the Morettis. Someone planted it.”
I felt sick. “Who? Who’s doing this?”
“We don’t know yet,” he said. “But I’m locking down the estate. No one gets in or out.”
I stared at him, fear and anger mixing. “That’s not enough,” I said. “They got my necklace. They’re in my room, Lorenzo.”
He stepped closer, his hands reaching for mine. “I know,” he said. “I’m sorry. I’ll fix it.”
His touch was warm, grounding. I wanted to pull away, but I didn’t. His eyes were soft, full of worry. “I can’t lose you,” he said, his voice low.
My heart skipped. The air was heavy again, like before. He lifted his hand, brushing my hair back. His fingers lingered, soft on my cheek. “Elena,” he said, his voice rough. “I need you to know… you’re not just a duty to me.”
I closed my eyes, his words sinking in. I felt the pull, stronger now. His hand slid to my neck, pulling me closer. His lips brushed my forehead, soft, warm. My body trembled. I wanted to kiss him again, to forget everything. But the camera, the necklace, the note—they held me back.
“I can’t,” I said, stepping away. “Not now. Not with this.”
He nodded, his eyes pained. “I’ll wait,” he said. “I’ll keep you safe.”
He left, and I locked the door. My body ached for him. My heart wanted him. But my mind screamed danger. The Morettis were watching. Someone was betraying us. And Lorenzo—he was my strength and my weakness. I didn’t know how to survive this.
