One hundred & Five
One hundred & Five
The ballroom had emptied. Only the low hum of the night and the soft patter of rain against the tall windows stayed behind. Elena sat on the edge of the bed, still in the gown she’d worn when Dante had walked back into their lives. The silk stuck to her like a memory she couldn’t shake.
Dante stood by the window, his shirt half undone and his sleeves rolled up. Shadows cut across his face, making him look harder, colder not the man who’d kissed his wife a few hours ago, but a man who had come back from something worse than death to take back what was his.
“Im going to break them piece by piece,” he said, quiet and steady, watching the city below. “They would wish for death but it won't come easily.”
Elena pushed herself up. Her voice was calm but firm. “Good remind them who you are.”
He turned, a small, dangerous smile lifting one corner of his mouth. “Say it,” he prompted.
She lifted her chin. “You’re Dante Virello, my husband. They made the mistake of touching what’s yours.”
The smile grew, colder. He crossed the room and cupped her face, pressing a short kiss to her forehead. “You’re different now, my love. You used to shake when people said my name. Now you wear it like armor.”
She returned his look. “You made me this way. And I don't regret being this way.”
He gave a soft, rough laugh. “Then we finish what they started.…together.”
She nodded, careful and sure. “We do it smartly. Victor, Sofia, and Luciano they’ll panic. When they panic, they slip up. Every mistake they make will cost them blood.”
Dante’s hand moved to her waist. His voice dropped, low and hungry. “I want Victor to be last. I want him to watch everything he built rot. I’ll take his allies, his money, his power. And when he’s broken….”
Elena finished for him, almost a whisper, “You take his life.”
His smile went darker. “Exactly.”
They stood close as thunder rolled across the sky. Outside and inside, the storm matched them: rage, desire, and a hot need for revenge, all mixed into something dangerous. For the first time since he’d come back, Dante let himself smile. This time, they would make the world burn for them both.
Thunder shook the old windows of the De Luca mansion. Victor Langston stood before the fireplace, a news replay looping on the TV. Dante’s speech. His face on the screen. Elena at his side. Then…names flashed: Matthew and Isabella Ravanelli.
Victor’s hand crushed his glass until it shattered.
“Turn that off!” he barked.
Luciano paced like an animal in a cage. Sofia lounged on the couch, swirling her wine, her face cool but uneasy.
Victor turned on them, his eyes hard. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”
Sofia rolled her eyes. “Calm down, Victor. So he’s alive. So what? He’s only a man. We can make sure he dies this time.”
Victor slammed his palm on the table. “A man with the Ravanelli name and with Elena at his side! Do you know what that means?”
Luciano stopped, confused. “Ravanelli?”
Sofia’s voice sharpened. “Why were they called her parents? I know she wasn’t your daughter … what does that mean?”
Victor’s face went pale, but not from guilt. The color left because he’d opened a wound he kept hidden. He stared at them, the fire lighting his hard lines.
“Because she is a Ravanelli.”
Sofia’s glass slipped from her fingers and smashed on the floor. “What?”
Luciano’s jaw worked. “You better start talking.”
Victor turned to the flames, his shadow long and cold. “Twenty-six years ago, Matthew Ravanelli embarrassed me. He refused to partner with me, laughed at me, said I’d never be more than his shadow. I promised I would take everything he loved.…his fortune, his power… his child.”
Luciano’s face went white. “You stole her?”
Victor did not blink. “More like held on to her. She was a baby. No one would miss her if I said she was gone. I took her, and I made her into a Langston. I built my name and my empire around her, using what I stole.”
Sofia stared like he’d become a different person. “You kidnapped Elena?”
Victor’s voice was flat. “I gave her a life. I raised her as mine. And through her, I rose. I was there for Matthew when he searched desperately for her, with that I was able to build the right connections to get to where I am today.”
Luciano moved like a man about to strike. “You’ve lost your mind. You think this can stay hidden? Dante won’t let you live after this.”
Victor’s anger showed in the tremor of his words. “I’ll deal with Dante.”
Luciano laughed, bitter and short. “Deal with him? He crawled back from the grave, Victor. He watched everything burn and came back smiling. You think you can handle a ghost?”
Victor’s voice went darker. “I did what I had to do. I built everything with fear and careful hands. I will not let some returned ghost take it from me.”
Sofa’s usual smugness was gone; fear softened her features. “What if Dante already knows? What if that’s why he brought the Ravanellis out tonight?”
Victor said nothing. His silence said more than words.
Luciano swore under his breath and stepped back. “You’ve dragged us all into ruin. Dante isn’t just looking for revenge. He wants to destroy.”
The room fell heavy with that thought. Rain beat on the windows. For the first time in years, Victor Langston... a man who had built his life with secrets and cruelty looked like a man who might lose everything.
Sofia tried to push the heaviness away with a laugh that trembled. “Then we strike first.”
Victor turned on her, hard and fast. “You touch him, and he’ll level this city. Don't try anything stupid.”
Sofia’s smile cracked into something sharp. “Then let him try. If I can’t kill Dante Virello… I’ll burn down everything he loves.”
