Chapter 131 The Scottish Flower
Chapter 131 The Scottish Flower
Elizabeth saw Adam change in the following months. He was calmer and happier. Whenever he called, it was to talk about the Scottish woman. He was anxious for contact, but she never answered. When she answered for the first time, she was cold with him. Adam thought about giving up. The girl clearly didn’t want this contact, so Adam wasn’t going to insist.
It wasn’t even lunchtime yet when Elizabeth arrived alone at Adam’s house.
“Elizabeth, what are you doing here?”
She walked through the door smiling, carrying a folder with several papers.
“It’s an emergency. I need this organized for tomorrow or Jonathan will kill me! Can you take a look at this for me?”
“With great pleasure, but I have to scold you... How did you get here?”
Elizabeth shrugged and smiled.
“You can’t drive while pregnant! Jonathan forbade it.”
“Adam, I came by taxi... Jonathan had my car fixed, but he didn’t give me back the keys.”
“Less bad. I’ll look at this for you!”
Adam sat down with her at the table and separated the invoices. Most of them were from baby stores. Charles hadn’t even been born yet and was already expensive.
“Adam, did you call the Scottish woman again?” Elizabeth asked.
“No... Last time she made it clear that she was only talking to me because her father answered. I’m not going to keep running after someone who doesn’t care about me at all.”
“But what if she calls you? Will you treat her well?”
“If she calls me, I’ll set the wedding date...”
Elizabeth laughed at her brother.
“Want to bet? She won’t call. If she does, I’ll marry her!”
“Deal! If she calls you, I’ll be the godmother of your wedding. If she doesn’t call you... Well, I’ll think about what you can ask for.”
“You’ll cook for me for a whole month!” Adam had just finished speaking when his phone rang. “Holy shit! Congratulations, Elizabeth, you won.”
“I can’t believe it... Let me talk to her?”
“Are you crazy! Now stay quiet...”
Adam cleared his throat and answered.
“Hello.” Adam didn’t notice it was a video call and held the phone to his ear. He heard Dayse’s laugh on the other end of the line. “Is it really you, my Scottish flower?”
“Did you recognize my laugh, Adam?”
“Yes, and I read the name on the screen.”
“And you didn’t see it was a video call?”
At that moment, Adam took the phone away from his ear and looked at the screen, seeing Dayse’s face. Elizabeth kept asking for the phone the whole time, even tried to grab it, but Adam didn’t let her.
“Dayse, I’m surprised by your call. I thought you didn’t want to talk to me.”
“Ah, Adam, you had called me on a bad day...”
Elizabeth was restless with curiosity and ended up speaking loudly. Adam had no choice but to pass the phone to his sister.
“Adam, I see you’re not alone. I think it’s better if we talk later. Bye...”
“Dayse, wait!” Adam handed the phone to Elizabeth.
“A redhead... How beautiful!” Elizabeth took the device and stood up, walking near Adam so he remained visible in the background while she spoke. “My name is Elizabeth, I’m Adam’s sister. You are really beautiful.”
“There! You satisfied your curiosity, now let me talk to Dayse,” Adam said impatiently.
“Little brother, the women in your life are talking... Silence, please!”
Dayse laughed and Elizabeth winked at Adam.
“Dayse, tell me about yourself. I have to approve my brothers’ choices,” Elizabeth said.
“Ah! Something about me?... I don’t know, I cook really well...”
“That’s great, he lives on frozen food... I’ll show you his fridge.”
At that moment, Adam took the phone from her hand. Elizabeth burst out laughing at his desperation.
“Dayse, I’m sorry. My sister has no sense,” Adam said, embarrassed.
“I already like her. She seems like a cheerful person.”
Adam smiled at the comment.
“What have you been doing, Dayse?”
“Nothing much. I just take care of the house. At most, I call my sister.”
“You don’t go out? You don’t walk around the city?”
“Adam, go out with who?”
“I see...”
“And you? What have you been doing?”
“Not much. Today I’m sorting out my sister’s bookkeeping. She’s terrible with numbers... Did I tell you I’m going to have a nephew?”
Adam spoke while smiling at Elizabeth in front of him. She loved meeting Dayse and thought she really seemed like a good girl for him to fall in love with.
“No! Is it your sister’s son?” Dayse asked.
“Yes, she’s at the end of her pregnancy and still has time to bother me.”
They stayed silent for a few minutes. Elizabeth gestured for Adam to say something. He smiled and signaled for her to stay quiet.
“I think I’ll hang up. I must be disturbing your bookkeeping.”
“No, Dayse. I’ll always be available for you. I was just admiring you. You’re unique, you know?”
“You’re going to make me shy.”
Elizabeth made faces while listening to the conversation. At that moment, Dave walked through the door.
“My Scottish flower, I’m going to hang up now. We’ll see each other in person soon. See you soon.”
“Bye, Adam.”
Adam hung up and Dave realized who he had been talking to.
“Did you hang up because I arrived, little brother?” Dave said, kissing Elizabeth’s forehead.
“Shut up, Dave. I’m busy here.”
“Elizabeth, did Adam tell you that he closed a deal with a spinster that no one else wanted...?”
“Why didn’t anyone else want her? She’s so beautiful...”
Upon hearing those words, Dave felt like the only one who didn’t really know who the girl he had turned down was.
“Wait, you saw her, Elizabeth? Is the girl really pretty?”
“I just talked to her. Beautiful, redhead, nice... I liked her!”
Dave just shook his head in denial. He found it strange that a girl Dayse’s age was single. He had thrown the trip to the wedding onto his brother to get rid of a problem, but it seemed Adam had done well with the switch.
Even so, Dave mocked Adam. He didn’t think he had any advantage in this deal.
“I left something in the warehouse. Dad wants information. You know this is your thing.”
Adam smiled sideways, organized the papers, and went to the kitchen. He grabbed a can of soda and was getting ready to leave the house when his sister stopped him.
“Adam, I’m here... Don’t go now.”
“Relax, little sister. It’s just work and Dave will take care of you for a few minutes.”
He went out the back door and headed to the warehouse. Elizabeth felt a shiver every time they mentioned that her brother was there. She knew he could be cruel to his enemies.
Elizabeth sat on the sofa and Dave went over to her.
“Don’t be like that. It’s not good for my nephew...” Dave said, hugging her. “Tell me about the Scottish woman. Is she really as beautiful as Adam says?”
“She’s beautiful... Very nice too. She... Never mind, it was just a thought of mine.”
“Tell me...”
“She’s as trapped as I used to be. Whether we like it or not, as soon as I turned 18 I gained my freedom. She’s 30 years old and doesn’t leave the house. She just cooks and cleans. Adam told me she didn’t get married so she could take care of her sister. I kept thinking... and who took care of her?”
