LILY’S POV
“What are we going to name him?” Leo asks, thrusting into me.
“Him?”
“or her. What will the name be?” he heaves and smiles into my eyes.
“Oh Leo.” I moan as he hits the spot. I am too pleasured to think of a name for the baby so I enjoy the coitus until it ends; until He comes in me.
I wait but after Leo gets off me, he drifts into a deep sleep, making him unresponsive to my soft tugs at his arm for us to talk about the bun in my oven.
I decide to call it a night.
The morning comes with a lot of promises. I wake up and see Leonardo smiling down at me.
“Is something the matter?” I ask him.
“Were you serious last night?”
“Yes, I was serious.”
“I am going to be a father.” His smile shrinks, his eyes wetting.
“Yes.” I open my arms to receive him in a hug.
“Come. We are going to get married on the beach tomorrow.” He pulls me up and kisses me. I pull out of the kiss and stare at his face; I don’t think I have stared into his face before when he has been this emotional damage. His eyes are soaked, his beards hide goosebumps underneath it, and his smile is genuine. He looks like a little boy who lost his toy and just got given it by his teacher.
“How are we going to …”
“Quick. There is no time to waste.” He pulls me up from the bed, “We are going to go shopping today.”
“Okay.” I hug him tightly and rush to get ready for the day.
“Where are we going?” Luna asks as we rush into the car.
“To the boutique.”
“Oh, where is the boutique located.” Bella asks.
“Where we will get the clothes.” Leo replies as he takes the car seat.
We get into the car and speed off. The ride is jolly with questions from Luna and Bella about our destination, until we arrive at a bridal services store.
“You are staying in the car. It is bad luck to see the bride’s clothes before the wedding day.”
“Okay love. Will you find your way home?” Leo asks.
“Yes. I can. Luna comes with me.” I say as I pull Luna out of the car to follow me. She has to help me out in picking out the perfect wedding gown for tomorrow.
“Fine. Bell comes with me.” Leo says, causing Bella to run out of the backseat to ride shot gun.
“Okay. Suit yourself.”
“I see what you did there. I most definitely will.”
I walk into the shop with Luna and the shopping begins. We walk through the rows of the boutique looking for the perfect white wedding gown.
I see a lot but Luna does not approve of them.
“That is a lovely gown is it not?” I ask as we stare at a white wedding gown made like a jumpsuit.
“While white dresses have always been iconic wedding symbols in many countries, brides that like to buck tradition are now considering dresses of all colors. Today we’re going to be looking out for black wedding dresses, and how you are going to slay it on your wedding day.” Luna schools.
“Okay. You’re the boss.” I say, urging Luna on to lead the way.
“That one!” she screams almost immediately. Startling me.
“What one?” I ask, looking around confused and not seeing what she points at.
“The black gown in the glass.”
“Wow!” I exclaim in a whisper as I stare at the beauty. The black gown has black flowers adorning the downside of it. The gown is beautiful but not flashy. It is simple, yet elegant.
“You are taking it.” Luna says as she walks towards the dress and grab it to get a feel.
The attendant in the shop comes, “I see that you have chosen our prized possession.
“Yes Ma’am we are taking it.” Luna says authoritatively.
“Are you the one getting married miss?” The attendant jokes at Luna.
“I am the one.” I say.
“Wow. A beautiful dress for a beautiful lady. That will be a thousand euros.”
“Deal.” Luna cuts in sharply, “Come on Lily. Let’s get to check out and let them get it packaged.”
I just walk around the store obeying orders from Luna and smiling at her resolve to help out with choosing a wedding dress.
“Okay.”
When we are done with shopping. I hail a cab that conveys Luna and me to the house.
Opening the door to my house, I see a letter on the floor. I quickly pick it up and hide it away before Luna sees it.
“Just because you are getting married that does not mean that you get to act weird.” Luna says as she walks in behind me.
“Thank you for the help today.” I don't know the perfect response to give her so I stroke her hair and walk her into the house.
I hurriedly get to my room and set the gown aside. I whip out the letter and panic before I decide to open it.
‘Is this another enemy of mine come to haunt me?’
‘Should I tell Leo about this?’
‘What if the letter is not addressed to me?’
I cannot think of any enemies at the moment that would want to do me any harm or send a threatening letter to me. The ones I received in Italy were the handwork of Leo’s jealous uncle who tried to kill me to get to Leo. Now that he is dead, there is no way that he would have done it.
Another person that could have sent this to me is my father, but he is dead now. All enemies dead and the rest do not know where I am hidden so who could it be?
I think I am just being paranoid for no reason; I have not even checked what the letter says yet.
I unfold the letter and read: Meet me at the Beach by 7:00PM. Come alone. Miss. Anderson.
I thought everything is over with Derek gone. I thought I could finally live with Leonardo, the girls and my unborn child in peace. Why does it have to be me? Can't they send it to another person who hasn't suffered enough?
Who could have sent this? The letter does not seem hostile but it frightens me. I am frightened but I see no need to let Leonardo know about this.
I look at the time and it is just noon; seven hours to go. I begin a mental countdown.
Leo returns home with Bella some minutes after five and the noise begins. Leo has returned with a lot of goodies for the girls and I.
We all dance and pay around the large house; happy like we have no worry in the world. Everyone in the house is happy, except me. Not that I am not happy, I just have something to worry about.
“So what will the wedding be like?” Luna asks Leonardo.
“Oh. Something little. Something beautiful. Just the four of us at the beach.”
“Sounds pretty.” Bella says.
7:00
“I need to get a little fresh air. I will be right back with you guys.” I excuse myself before I leave the house and head to the beach.
I know Leonardo will know something is up but I am not ready to tell him yet. I'll just have to see what this is all about.
‘How will I even know the person I am supposed to meet when I get to the beach?’ I think to myself as I walk through the scanty beach.
This is the same way I felt when I first arrived in Italy; lost, yet certain that something life-changing is about to happen.
“You’re early.” A voice calls out from behind me. Something about the voice makes me freeze and lose the ability to talk immediately. The familiarity of the voice is too great to pass away.
“Laura?” I whisper. Tears already welling up in my eyes. I turn around slowly and gently; careful to not ruin the moment. Oh how I have missed her.
“Laura?” I want to run and hug her tightly. Hold her so close to me. I walk hurriedly towards her.
“Not one more step.” She holds her hand up at me and moves back.
Is she appalled by me?
“Laura. What..?”
“Before you come any closer please answer these questions honestly.”
“Okay.”
"Do you kill people now?"
"What? Laura noooo, it's not like that..."
“Did you kill your mother?”
“It is not like …”
“Did you kill her?”
“I was trying to protect her from my father.”
"What do you mean protect her from your father? Is she protected now that she is no morep
"Can you please just hear me out first before you judge me?"
"I'm not judging you. I want to understand all of this. I want to know why you left without saying a proper goodbye."
"Okay. First of all I had no choice than to run when I found out my life was in danger."
"Why couldn't you tell me atleast? I could have figured out a way to help you by then."
"Laura it wasn't that easy, I was young, naive and scared. I didn't have a proper family like yours. My Dad was always beating up my mother and abusing me emotionally. My only escape was school and you. I know I never opened up to you but you really helped me a lot during those awful times. I was actually saving money to move out of Tudor when once I clock eighteen but I guess things got worse. My mother was a drunkard and drug addict but she cared for me and I couldn't report my father to the police because I wanted to protect my Mom. I knew very well that he would blame her for everything especially with her condition, so I took in everything, the hurt, fear and pain all alone. It wasn't that easy Laura and then there was this particular morning when I became tired of running away, I became tired of being a coward and watching my Dad humiliate my Mom. So I watched him beat her and I couldn't leave for school, I felt it was the right time to do what I should have done earlier. So I took a knife from the kitchen, of course I didn't know how to handle that but my intentions wasn't to end him. I just wanted him to feel what my Mom has been feeling for years but I don't know how he did it but when I opened my eyes, it was my mother's corpse and not his and that's the day all my troubles began. I had to run away from him, I had to leave Tudor city because I was afraid of what my father would do to me."
“He was not your father.” She says sternly.
“What do you mean?”
“It does not matter right now."
"How can you say it doesn't matter? Even though he is gone, atleast I deserve to know the truth, it could be related to how he treated my Mom and I."
"Fine. Are you really sure you're ready to hear this?"
"Try me."
"Your father isn't your real father, rather his Dad is."
"Wait! What you're saying is that my father's Dad is my real father."
"Yes that's what I'm trying to explain to you."
"How is that even possible?"
"I know it sounds like bullshit."
"It is bullshit."
"Your father hates you because you remind him of his first love Aileen, your biological mother."
"So what you're trying to say is that my biological mother, who happened to be my father's girlfriend, had an affair with his Dad?"
"Yes and that's why transfer all the agression on you because you resemble his Dad."
"How did you find out all of this?"
"Lily I really care about you so I didn't just sit down there and hope you would come back, I had to do something."
"It sounds like a fairytale."
"Yes I can imagine."
"What about my real mother?"
"She died after giving birth to you."
"Shet! My family tree is a long one and I don't think I want to dwell on it now. You're right, I should just move on and forget about everything."
Next question; Are you a mafia gang member now?”
“What no! Laura why are you…”
“Last question.”
A silence to appease the tension.
“Shoot.”
“Why didn’t you ever call?”
‘Why didn’t I ever call?’ I think to myself. The only thing I can whisper is, “I am sorry Laura.”
“It doesn’t matter now does it?” she walks slowly to me and hugs me for a long time. “I missed you.” She sniffles.
“How did you find me?” I ask her, pulling away from the hug.
“Chance. I saw you with a wanted mafia member.”
“When?”
The tension subsides and we stare into each other’s eyes for a long moment. Gradually, our truths lay bare o each other. For some reason I see her face change to show the same face I remember; the face of trust and love.
“I have so much to tell you Laura.” I say as I hold her hands and walk her down the beach.
"I can't wait."
I hold her hands and we talk about everything that happened to me since I left Tudor, from Gilberto, to working as a nanny and everything I have faced since I became a member of Cammora and finally finding my one true love that's I can't stop thinking about.
"So much has happened to you Lily. I'm glad you're happy now. So when do I get to see your Mr handsome and talk to him?"
"Soon."
‘Thank heavens that I did not make a fuss about the letter.’
“Why did you choose to send me a letter anyway? What if someone else saw it?”
“I have no idea Lily. I guess I wasn’t thinking.” She rests her head on my shoulder as we walk.
"It's okay, you did what you had to do and thank you for not giving up on me."
"It's my pleasure."
"Tomorrow is my wedding by the way.”
“No fucking way.”
