Chapter 83: "The Fractured Path"
\~~~
The chaos around Felicia blurred as time seemed to slow. Nelson’s voice echoed in her ears, his command to run repeating like a broken record. But she stood rooted to the spot, her breath uneven, her fingers trembling against the book’s rough leather cover.
The green-eyed woman recovered quickly from Nelson’s initial attack. With a sharp whistle, she signaled her group to focus fire, and in an instant, the air was alive with movement. Weapons clashed, blades glinted in the dim light, and the scent of metal and earth filled Felicia’s nostrils.
Nelson fought like a demon unleashed, his movements fluid yet ferocious. Every swing of his sword carved through the night like lightning, his sheer determination enough to keep the group at bay—for now. But it was clear he couldn’t hold them off forever.
“Felicia, go!” Nelson barked again, his tone edged with desperation as he deflected another attacker.
She couldn’t. The thought of leaving him—of abandoning him to fend for himself—made her stomach churn. She gritted her teeth, clutching the book tighter. She wasn’t helpless, not anymore. Whatever secrets this book held, it had been her father’s most guarded possession, and if he had trusted her with it, she had to trust herself.
Felicia scanned the scene, her gaze darting between the attackers. Then she noticed it: a small pouch hanging from the belt of one of the masked men, its contents rattling softly with each step he took. Grenades, or at least some kind of explosive.
She felt the weight of her dagger against her thigh, reclaimed during her sprint through the woods. Her fingers brushed the hilt, and an idea began to form—a reckless, dangerous idea, but one that might buy them time.
Her voice shook with adrenaline as she yelled, “Nelson, down!”
Without waiting for confirmation, Felicia hurled the dagger at the man’s pouch. It wasn’t a perfect throw, but it struck true enough, slicing the strap that held the pouch in place. The pouch hit the ground with a muted thud, its contents spilling out—three small, cylindrical grenades rolling in different directions.
For a moment, everything stopped. The attackers froze, their gazes snapping to the ground. Nelson dove to the side, instinctively shielding himself.
Felicia didn’t think. She lunged for the nearest grenade, her fingers closing around the cold metal as she pulled the pin. With a sharp flick of her wrist, she hurled it toward the group.
“Cover your ears!” she screamed, diving behind a tree.
The explosion that followed wasn’t large, but it was loud enough to send shockwaves through the clearing. Shouts erupted as the attackers scrambled, some retreating while others fell to the ground, stunned by the blast. Smoke and dirt filled the air, shrouding the scene in a murky haze.
Nelson was at her side in an instant, his face streaked with sweat and dirt. “Are you insane?” he hissed, grabbing her arm and pulling her up.
Felicia didn’t have time to answer. The green-eyed woman emerged from the smoke, her expression livid, her weapon raised. Nelson reacted instantly, stepping in front of Felicia and parrying the blow meant for her.
The clang of steel meeting steel reverberated through the clearing, and Nelson pushed back with a growl. “Felicia, *now* you run!”
But she still didn’t. Her gaze flicked to the book in her hands, then to the woman whose ferocity rivaled Nelson’s. “She’s not going to stop,” Felicia muttered, a hint of fear in her voice.
Nelson spared her a brief glance. “Neither are we.”
Felicia’s chest tightened, but before she could respond, the woman’s voice cut through the chaos. “Enough of this!” Her tone was venomous, filled with frustration and something darker. “You don’t understand what you’re protecting, girl. That book isn’t a shield—it’s a curse.”
Felicia’s grip on the book tightened. “And you think I’m going to believe *you*? You came here to kill us!”
The woman’s lips curled into a cruel smile. “I didn’t come here to kill you. I came here to save you—from yourself.” Her gaze burned with intensity. “That book contains things no one should know. Secrets that will destroy everything you love if you hold onto them.”
Felicia hesitated, the woman’s words gnawing at the edges of her resolve. Was she lying? Manipulating her? Or was there some kernel of truth buried beneath the menace?
Nelson didn’t wait for Felicia to decide. He launched another attack, driving the woman back with a flurry of strikes. But she was skilled, parrying each blow with ease, her movements almost serpentine in their grace.
Felicia’s mind raced as she tried to make sense of everything. Her father’s obsession, the warnings, the attackers—all of it led back to the book. What could be inside it that warranted this level of chaos? What secrets had her father kept hidden, even from her?
Her thoughts were interrupted by a sharp cry. She turned just in time to see Nelson falter, the green-eyed woman landing a glancing blow to his side. He staggered but didn’t fall, his teeth gritted against the pain.
Rage flared in Felicia’s chest. She grabbed a second grenade from the ground, pulling the pin with trembling fingers. She didn’t hesitate this time, lobbing it toward the woman with all the strength she could muster.
The explosion was deafening, and for a moment, all Felicia could hear was the ringing in her ears. When the smoke cleared, the woman was gone, her remaining men retreating into the shadows of the forest.
Felicia stumbled to Nelson’s side, her hands shaking as she helped him to his feet. Blood stained his shirt, but he waved her off. “I’m fine,” he muttered, though his face was pale. “We need to move.”
Felicia nodded, her throat tight. Together, they staggered away from the clearing, their steps unsteady but determined. The book pressed against her chest felt heavier than ever, its weight a constant reminder of the danger they faced.
As they reached the edge of the forest, Felicia slowed, her breath hitching. Nelson turned to her, his expression softening despite the pain etched into his features.
“We made it,” he said quietly, his voice rough.
“For now,” she replied, her eyes flicking back toward the darkness they’d left behind.
Nelson reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Felicia, whatever happens, we’ll figure it out. Together.”
She wanted to believe him, to let his words be enough. But something in her gut told her this was only the beginning. The green-eyed woman’s warning echoed in her mind, chilling her to the core.
As they turned toward the faint glow of the town in the distance, Felicia stopped in her tracks. Her hand moved instinctively to her stomach, a strange sensation blooming within her—warm, almost electric.
Nelson noticed and frowned. “What is it?”
Felicia shook her head, unsure of how to explain. But before she could speak, the ground beneath them trembled, a low rumble rising from deep within the earth. They exchanged a look of alarm as the rumble grew louder, the forest behind them seeming to come alive with movement.
And then, in the distance, a faint, eerie glow pierced the darkness, illuminating the tree line like an ominous beacon.
Felicia’s heart sank. Whatever they’d just unleashed, it wasn’t finished with them yet…
