Chapter 98 CHAPTER 98:THE NIGHT EVERYONE KNEW

Chapter 98 CHAPTER 98:THE NIGHT EVERYONE KNEW

~ Elara ~

The first thing I noticed when I walked into the house was the sound.

Laughter warm and unrestrained. Music humming softly through the walls. The clink of glasses, the low murmur of voices blending together in a way that felt… full.

Alive.

Calvin’s hand tightened around mine instinctively, like he felt it too.

“You okay?” he asked, leaning down slightly so only I could hear.

I nodded, though my chest felt too tight for a proper breath. “I think I’m overwhelmed in a good way.”

His lips brushed my temple. “Good. Because there’s no escape.”

I laughed softly as he opened the door wider, revealing the living room completely transformed. Warm lights were strung along the ceiling, golden and soft, casting a glow over familiar faces friends, family, people who had watched us separately for years and were now seeing us as us.

Together.

Someone had gone all out. There were flowers everywhere—white and deep green, elegant but not excessive. A long table stood against the wall, filled with food and drinks, and at the center of it all sat a small sign that read:

CALVIN & ELARA : SHE SAID YES

My cheeks burned.

“Oh my God,” I murmured. “They made a sign.”

Calvin chuckled. “I told them not to.”

“You did not.”

“I tried,” he corrected, unapologetic.

Before I could respond, someone squealed.

“Elara!”

I barely had time to brace myself before arms wrapped around me, nearly knocking me off balance. I laughed as I hugged back, the familiar comfort of someone who had seen me through too many phases of my life to count.

“Let me see the ring,” she demanded, pulling back just enough to grab my hand.

I lifted it shyly, the diamond catching the light.

Her eyes widened. “He did good.”

“I’m standing right here,” Calvin said dryly.

She looked up at him and smiled. “Exactly.”

The night blurred into a series of moments I wished I could bottle and keep forever.

Hugs that lingered longer than usual. Congratulations whispered with sincerity. People looking at us like they were trying to reconcile the past versions of us with who we had become together.

At one point, Calvin was pulled away into a circle of friends, claps landing on his back, voices overlapping.

“Didn’t think you were the settling down type, Conner.”

“She broke you,” another teased.

Calvin just smiled calm, content, unbothered.

“She didn’t break me,” he said. “She chose me.”

I felt that sentence in my bones.

I was by the drinks table when Calvin’s mother found me.

She didn’t say anything at first just looked at me with that quiet intensity that had always made me feel like she saw more than I wanted her to.

Then she took my hands.

“I’ve never seen him like this,” she said softly.

Emotion swelled in my throat. “He makes it easy to love him.”

She smiled, eyes shining. “No. He learned how to love because of you.”

I swallowed hard.

Before I could respond, she pulled me into a hug that was firm and grounding, the kind that said welcome to the family without ever needing the words.

Later, Calvin found me near the back patio, staring out at the city lights beyond the glass.

“You disappeared,” he said, sliding an arm around my waist.

“I needed a second,” I admitted. “This is a lot.”

He hummed in understanding. “Too much?”

“No,” I said quickly, turning toward him. “Just… I never imagined this.”

He tilted his head. “What did you imagine?”

I thought about it.

“I imagined surviving,” I said honestly. “Not being celebrated.”

His expression softened. “Then tonight is overdue.”

Someone clinked a glass.

I turned just in time to see Calvin’s best friend standing near the center of the room, already holding a drink, already grinning like he was about to expose secrets.

“Oh no,” I whispered.

Calvin sighed. “I should’ve stopped him.”

“Everyone!” his friend called. “If I can have your attention for a moment yes, even you in the back pretending not to listen.”

Laughter rippled through the room.

“I’ve known Calvin a long time,” he continued. “Long enough to know he doesn’t do anything halfway. He doesn’t love casually. He doesn’t commit easily. And he definitely doesn’t let people in unless they earn it.”

He raised his glass toward me.

“Elara, you didn’t just earn it. You changed him. You made him softer without making him weaker. And if anyone deserves a lifetime of happiness, it’s the two of you.”

Cheers erupted.

I felt tears sting my eyes as Calvin leaned down and kissed my hair.

Then someone called my name.

“Elara, your turn!”

I froze.

Calvin stiffened beside me. “You don’t have to”

“I want to,” I said quietly, surprising even myself.

I stepped forward, heart pounding, hands trembling slightly as I accepted the glass.

The room went quiet.

“I’m not great at speeches,” I admitted, earning a few smiles. “But I know this I didn’t always believe in endings that were happy.”

I glanced at Calvin, my voice catching.

“I believed in endurance. In getting through things. And then Calvin walked into my life and showed me what it meant to build something instead of just surviving it.”

My breath shook.

“He loves quietly. Deeply. Without conditions. And being loved by him has been the safest thing I’ve ever known.”

I lifted my glass.

“To love that feels like home.”

The room erupted again, and when Calvin kissed me this time, it was slow and grounding, like a promise sealed in front of everyone who mattered.

As the night wore on, the party softened.

Music lowered. Conversations deepened. Laughter turned lazy and content.

Calvin and I ended up in the corner of the couch, my feet tucked beneath me, his arm draped loosely around my shoulders. The ring felt heavier now not in weight, but in meaning.

“Still overwhelmed?” he asked.

I smiled. “Still happy.”

He kissed my knuckles. “Good. Because this is just the beginning.”

I rested my head against his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat.

And for the first time in my life, the future didn’t feel like something to fear.

It felt like something to walk into hand in hand, surrounded by love, knowing exactly where I belonged.
