Chapter 45 BETWEEN BROTHERS
~ Elara ~
"W... what? I nothing." I stumble out, trying to avoid eye contact so he wouldn't notice my lie.
Although it was bad enough I'm sure he could already tell.
He looks up behind me, his eyes on Calvin and his mother. As soon as he saw Calvin his jaw clenched, his gaze burning with anger as he looked at his brother.
"Do you want to go on a walk with me?" Wayne suddenly asks me, still looking at his brother. I look up, shocked at the sudden words that left his mouth.
" W..walk now?" I stutter out, looking up at him confused. It was nearly one in the morning.
" Yes, now. If not you can continue stalking my family." Wayne says jokingly as he shrugs, turning around as he walks down a hall.
It felt like all my problems had just gone away, I telt calm.
" Seems like Calvin got a reputation with the workers here too." Wayne laughs. It wasn't a regular, happy laugh, it was a laugh that sounded annoyed.
"Oh..him." I only say. I hadn't been surprised that it was all Calvin’s doing that they had to be careful with hiring young ladies.
At least I knew I wouldn't be his next target, maybe not in the best way since he wanted to kill me, literally.
I wanted to ask Wayne why he'd always looked so mad at his brother, what happened between them, but I figured that was too personal of a question to ask, especially as just a maid.
" In the cafeteria, when you spilled your food on Calvin, he didn't say anything to you right?" Wayne asks me as we continue walking down the path cutting through the garden.
His eyes were trained on me as I tried to figure out someway to answer that question.
"N..no he just told me to watch where I'm going." I say, deciding not to mention anything else that happened between us.
Wayne seemed like he was in thought for a moment, his eyebrows scrunched together as he looked ahead of him while we were walking.
"I..I have a question for you." I suddenly blurt out, watching him carefully just in case I shouldn't have said that.
He looks down at me shocked, a smile playing on his face. " Of course, go ahead." He laughs, his eyes almost seemed even more blue under the lit up garden.
"W.why do you talk to me? I'm not interesting, everyone else at that school hates me, and I'm just a maid, nothing special." I say, looking down at my feet.
My fingers had unconsciously tangled together again nervously as I waited on him to answer.
When he doesn't I look up, only to see his bright eyes already looking down at me, a glint of amusement in them.
" W.what?" I ask, confused at why he was looking at me.
"I'm just shocked that's all." He shrugs and I purse my lips together, only more confused at that response.
" What do you mean?" I ask, feeling a gush of wind suddenly blow through my hair. I could feel the goosebumps on my arms rise at the cold chills.
" I barely even know you, yet I already know you're the nicest person I've ever met, you’re shy but easy to talk to, and of course you're beautiful.
I don't see any reason why I wouldn't want to talk to you, why anyone wouldn't." He says, and the entire time I watch him talking I could feel my heart warm.
No one's ever said anything that nice to me. I think my brain was confused on what to say, being so used to nasty words that I couldn't think of a way to react.
"T.thanks." Is all my brain manages to come up with. A laugh leaves Wayne’s mouth at my response and I could already feel the embarrassment rush to my cheeks as they turned red.
"Let's start heading back, you look like your freezing." He suddenly says and I look down at myself, only now noticing my arms that were tightly wrapped around my cold body.
I nod my head, a small smile on my face as we turn back around towards the house.
"I've been meaning to ask you about that bruise on your eye, what happened?" He asks as we nearly reach the door, and I rack up any sort of lie in my head that seemed somewhat believable.
" Ooh, I fell down the stairs pretty bad and bruised up my eye." I lie, surprised to see he'd believed it.
"Ouch, that must've hurt like a bitch." He says, wincing as he looks more closely at the bruise. It definitely didn't look as bad now compared to a couple days ago.
Both of our heads suddenly snap towards the kitchen when the sound of glass reaches our ears.
I look up at Wayne but he already started walking towards the kitchen.
I follow behind him after closing the back door, a quiet gasp leaving my mouth when Calvin comes into view.
He was drunk, really drunk.
His hair was messy, his eyes didn't seem as cold as they'd always been, he looked tired, yet angry at the same time.
It's like he was trying to fight some horrifying war with himself.
Wayne watches Calvin from the entrance of the kitchen, his fists clenched at his side.
"Let's go." Wayne mumbles, turning around and walking back down the hallway.
I look at Calvin once more, my head tilted to the side when he makes eye contact with me. The blood from his face was now only covered with bruises and cuts from what I figured was a fight.
He looks away from me, downing the rest of the drink in his hand and I turn around, walking fast to catch up with Wayne .
"A aren't you going to help him?" I ask Wayne when I finally catch up to his long strides, already out of breath.
I don't think I should've said that, it only made Wayne more tense.
" He doesn't want my help." He says. I could hear the pain through his voice and I furrow my brows together as we silently walk towards my door.
"I'll see you tomorrow, goodnight Elara ." Wayne says, giving me a small smile before leaving.
I sigh, looking towards where the kitchen had been.
I shake my head at my thoughts, walking into my room after remembering he had threatened me.
