Chapter 67 Mysterious wolves
Mysterious wolves
Milo’s POV
The next few days blurred into an everyday routine of waking up, going to work, enduring the hate and silence treatment from the fellow workers, and then back to the Master's palace. Master still hadn’t returned from wherever he went. And despite myself, each night, I would always wonder where he went to? And why is he not yet back in this time that his pack needed him most.
It had been three days since the incident with the wounded soldier, and yet the whispers hadn't stopped. If not, it had grown worse.
Every time I walked past a corridor, I felt their eyes that continue to trail on me. “Dog.” “whore.” “He doesn’t belong here.” The words rolled off their tongues like venom. At first, they stung, but I forced myself not to crumble. If I broke now, then the people will see me for who i am, a weak omega
So, I kept working and assisting in any way I could.
Mopping floors. Carrying and washing the sheets, throwing away the rubbish. Because of the hate and no one allowing me to.come close to them, I could only do one of these.
And somewhere in my work, the little girl who I got to know to be Rachael, became my anchor and my friend.
The girl had a strange warmth about her and is the only pure hearted soul in the whole hospital apart from Daphne who has been lazy recently. The girl laughed easily, even when her own body trembled with fatigue and weakness. During the time of my break, she would come over to keep me company. She would sit beside me, and chatter about different things. Sometimes about her mother’s cooking, sometimes about the stars, sometimes about nothing at all. It was through her I knew most things happening in the pack. Like for instance the full moon celebration coming up shortly. For the first time in a long while, I had someone I could talk to other than being shunned by everyone.
I stepped into the hospital today. The familiar scent of dettol and izal hitting me immediately I entered. Today was a new day of enduring the silent mocking and hate from everyone, but that hardly mattered anymore.
“Good morning Daphne" I greeted as I approached her. Without waiting for her response, I helped her immediately carry the bags of medicine she was carrying.
“Any successs?…” I asked quietly, my eyes searching hers
She shook her head, her response the same for the past three days, the numbers kept on increasing rapidly. And up till now there has been no cure for it, no matter how hard the pack doctors tried to find one, there has been no discovered cure yet.”
The heaviness in her voice made me bite my lips in worry. I wanted to say something comforting, but the truth was, I lack words to say. Instead, we walked towards the store together in silence. The bags balanced in my two hands.
When we reached the store, I cleared my throat. “Rachael mentioned something yesterday… about a celebration coming up in the pack” I glanced around, before looking at her “What’s the full moon celebration really about?”
For the first time that morning, Daphne’s tired face softened a bit, a faint smile tugged at her lips. “Are you regretting your deal with Cornel? You can still back out if you…”
“No nooo. I just want to know what it is all about.” I replied quickly
“well if you say so. The full moon celebration is an important event in the pack. It's on the night of the full moon and everyone in the pack looks forward to it, no matter what’s happening. It’s more than just a party. It's a night of unity, strength, and tradition. A reminder that even if the world condemned us, we won't condemn ourselves.” she paused, her eyes glimmering into a distant memory.
“There will be music, dancing, feasting, and…” She paused, her eyes darting to me in a knowing look.“...and battles.”
“my stomach tightened.
“Okay…this battle, how is it?”
“It’s the way warriors test themselves.” Her gaze lingered on me, serious now. “This month’s celebration is only a few days away, Milo. You can still…”
I blocked my ears, going a little further in front, but a crashing sound made me turn back in panic to see Daphne trying to get up.
“Jesus, what happened.” I ran to help her get up. I noticed her hand trembling, that was when I really looked at her face, and for the first time this morning, I realized how pale she looked.
“Are you alright?” I asked, worry already brewing in my chest.
She forced a smile. “It’s nothing. Just tired.”
But I wasn’t stupid. For the past three days I have hardly seen her sleep for 5 minutes, always working tirelessly from morning till night.
“You need to rest Daphne. You have been overworking yourself ever since trying to research the cure. It's time to take a break.” I preached, but she shook her head with a defiant expression.
“I will only rest when I find out the cure for this calamity that has befallen us.” She said, trying to walk but she stumbled for the second time.
A yell escaped my throat. I ran to her to steady her. Her breathing became labored, and without being told, I knew that something was wrong.
A loud commotion came from the hospital lobby, breaking the delicate moment.
“Something is wrong” Daphne pushed forward, running towards the loud commotion. I followed hot in her trail, but I froze when I reached the lobby.
My heart stopped for a moment.
A group of people gathered towards a man that was bent over on the floor. His body writhing in black veins that darkened across his skin like black lightning. With foam coming out from his mouth. Healers and helpers crowded him, trying to hold him down.
but that was not what made me pause… It was the person that was on the stretcher.
my heart froze.
James.
Master’s former Beta. He was infected.
