Chapter 49 Chapter 49

Chapter 49 Chapter 49
The dpo 's insensitivity and incompetence made me mad.
Ken is a dangerous criminal and the DPO was acting like he was just a common thief Just because I was the victim and not a richer person who could wet their hands.
"That's what I can give_ two officers only."
"But. "
"Its OK Mira, I'm here." Scar interrupted my protest.
"See! your guardian Angel is watching over you, why do you fear. Let's only hope nothing happens to him." The dpo smirked.
Scar took up his words. “Is that a threat?" he asked with clenched teeth.
"Why would I threaten you after all you are not the criminal here." The DPO replied. There was a hint of mockery in his voice when he spoke to Scar. I didn't quite like it neither did I find it comfortable.
Scar narrowed his eyes at him, but didn’t say another word.
"You do not trust him, do you?" I asked scar after we left the office to wait outside. "I cannot bring myself to trust him too not after all I know about the police and gangs. Gangs own the town."
It was sunny outside but I felt cold from within. I was so tired of this feeling. I wanted it all to end. The feeling of impending doom kept clawing on my chest. I wanted to rip my heart out just so it could stop its incessant beating.
"I don't need to trust him." he replied. He curled his hands around my waist and pulled me to him. "He just needs to do his job. Don't worry I will protect you. I won't leave your side. That's why I am going with him."
"I know but still I-i feel something will go wrong and I need you to protect yourself when it does go wrong. Promise me that you will protect yourself if need be. Promise Me that if you had to choose between the both of us you will choose you. I don't want you to die for me."
"Neither do I want to, trust me. But I can't promise you this. I will give my life for you a thousand and one times so that's like promising that_"
"Then don't go with me. This is not your fight! I don't want to lose you to him." I looked away and bit my lip to restrain myself from crying.
God! I hated feeling this way.
"Don't tell me you want to start this now. You as well as I know that this became my fight the moment I stopped Ken from taking you. I am now his target too."
"Just stay away please."
"Stop being childish Mira! you know I cannot stay away even if I want to. It is sweet for you to try to protect me but I do not need protection. Stop reaching!" He groaned, exhaling through his mouth.
"You are the one being childish and crazy!" I snapped.
He burst out laughing. That kind of laughter you let out after listening to a baby pout. I was a woman not a child. It vexed me that he thought of me as a child.
I rolled my eyes and at that point I wanted to kill him more than I wanted to kill Ken and that was saying something. It was the first time I had seen him laugh this much. I wanted to laugh with him, but I kept having this hollow feeling in my gut that I couldn't shake off. Something was going to go wrong today. I could feel it.
"You know I am crazy for you." He whispered in my ear, his laughter dying to chuckles. He brought me closer to him wrapping his arms tight around me. I kicked his leg refusing to look up at him. I didn't want to reply, I didn't want to ask what he meant. I only wished time could stop at that point.
He was crazy for me. I couldn't believe it.
The DPO came out of his office with two other police men. He gave one of them the keys to a truck and then motioned for us to join him in his car.
"We will be in front. I advice you both stay at the back to keep alert." He said to the officer, they both saluted him and he returned the gesture.
He entered the drivers seat and closed the door.
"Get in." He motioned to us.
I was happy thar at least I didn't have to enter the truck the other officers were in. Even the thought of it made me scrunch up my nose.
Scar and I entered the car as the dpo had ordered.
The dpo drove weigh past speed limit causing me to become even more anxious than I was at first. The car dived into portholes, but he still didn't have the decency to reduce his speed.
"A supposed law abiding citizen breaking the law unapologetically." I whispered into Scar's ears causing him to chuckle.
After about an hour we got to Ogwa town and I became more alert.
"If you should see your aunt’s house will you recognize it?" The dpo asked turning back to face me. I shifted uncomfortably on my sit not wanting to think back at the past.
"Yeah I guess so." I murmured. I was not interested in knowing anything about her house.
This whole environment brought nothing to me but bad memories.  I wished to forget everything about her, every single thing, but with a mind like mine it was next to impossible. That was the problem with having a good memory.
"Calm down. It will be fine I am here. No one will hurt you." Scar whispered into my ears when he sensed how uneasy I was now feeling.
He rubbed my thigh soothingly and I relaxed a bit. I laid my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes enjoying the feel of his hand around my waist. His presence was all I needed to go into a different world of my own where I wasn't being pursued by a gang leader.
I soon became oblivious of everything as I let myself fall into a light sleep.
Scar seemed to be very alert unlike me and I could do with just that. I hated that I was now dependent on him, but I couldn't help myself from feeling that way.
The dpo brought the car to an abrupt halt causing my eyes to fly open.
I looked out the window to see that we were still on the road and now close to a bush.
"Let me get down here. Wait for me I need to do something." He informed us.
"What is that? Can't whatever it is wait until we are done?" Scar asked, narrowing his eyes. He was worried as he should have been. The road was lonely and covered with bushes. I didn't feel good about it either.
The dpo ignored him and took out the key from the ignition.
"I guess he wants to pi or something. Let him." I whispered to Scar, trying to calm him down.
