CHAPTER 105: THE EAST GATE REVOLT.
CHAPTER 105: THE EAST GATE REVOLT.
Adrian’s POV
The alarms echo through every corridor of the compound, a shrill metallic scream that slices through the fragile moment Serena and I shared only seconds ago.
The sound floods the command room like a wave of ice water, snapping every man inside to alertness. Serena reacts instantly, her posture shifting from emotional intensity to sharpened readiness. Her jaw tightens, but her eyes stay steady, focused, and controlled. She steps to my side without hesitation, the movement so natural it feels inevitable.
Luca stands in the doorway, breathless and tense. “They’re inside the east gate,” he says, voice low but urgent. “At least twenty. Maybe more. And they’re not hiding who they follow. They’re wearing the Prophet’s insignia on their sleeves.”
The betrayal is not abstract anymore. It has a face, a direction, and a proximity that leaves no room for denial. The Prophet’s war has crossed the line from threat to invasion.
I nod once, a gesture sharp enough to signal that hesitation is no longer tolerated. I reach for the weapons cabinet embedded in the wall panel. Serena crosses the room with me, her movements precise and unerring. She selects a handgun with a steady hand, checking the magazine with the kind of instinct born of necessity, not habit. When she clicks the weapon into place, the sound resonates with finality.
We move quickly down the hallway, and our footsteps echo against the cold concrete floor. Men rush past us, some heading toward the east wing, others sealing off the vulnerable entrances.
The compound has become a living organism reacting to a sudden wound. Serena walks beside me with a fierceness that radiates in the tightness of her shoulders and the deliberate cadence of her steps. The tension between us is different now, less intimate, more lethal, but still threaded with the heat of everything unspoken.
As we approach the central stairwell, I place a hand against her arm to guide her behind a column when gunfire erupts somewhere ahead. The sharp burst of sound ricochets down the corridor.
Serena looks up at me, her breath quick but controlled. “They’re pushing forward. They’re not here to intimidate you. They want you in chains.”
“They will not leave this compound with what they came for,” I answer quietly, my voice steady enough to anchor us both.
Luca meets us at the base of the stairs, his expression grim. “They’ve taken control of the service courtyard. They’ve blocked the secondary exit, and they’re posting snipers near the wall.”
“They’re trying to trap us,” Serena murmurs, her gaze tracing the hallway as if she can already see the enemy positions through the walls.
“They think I’ll walk out to negotiate,” I say. “They don’t understand me as well as the Prophet believes.”
Luca shifts anxiously. “Adrian… there’s more. They’re calling you out on the loudspeakers. They want you to come out alone.”
Serena stiffens at my side, a reaction so visceral it pulses through the air between us.
“We’re not giving them that,” she says firmly, her voice low but commanding.
I turn my head just enough to meet her eyes. Her defiance is a flame burning through the fear she will never admit aloud. The Prophet’s men chose the east gate for a reason: it is the oldest structural weakness, the one point I never fully renovated because it was meant to be retired.
The irony is not lost on me. He learned that from me.
We move through a side passage that leads to the surveillance hub overlooking the courtyard. The monitors flicker with grainy images of the invaders. Twenty of them, armed and disciplined, moving in a formation that bears my signature from years past.
Their leader stands in front of the group and lowers his hood, revealing Marcus Vass, one of the men I trained personally. He was always sharp, always arrogant, and always eager to prove himself. His allegiance to the Prophet stings deeper than I expect.
Serena leans over the console beside me, her arm brushing mine. The light from the screens illuminates her face, revealing a calm focus that steadies something inside me. She studies the footage without blinking. “They’re not here to negotiate. They’re here to make an example.”
The loudspeaker in the courtyard crackles, and Marcus’s voice echoes through the compound.
“Adrian Volkov, step out and face judgment. The Prophet has declared you unfit to lead. Surrender, and the Brotherhood will be restored.”
Serena exhales slowly, as if the sound itself is an act of defiance. “Restored to what? Blind obedience?”
Her anger vibrates through the room, subtle yet powerful. I feel it in the way her fingers tighten around the edge of the console. She is not angry with herself; she is angry that men I once trusted have turned their weapons toward me.
Marcus continues speaking, his tone dripping with the smug certainty of someone who believes he has already won. “If you refuse to face accountability, we will take you ourselves. Your loyal followers can choose to step aside or fall with you.”
Luca mutters something under his breath, but I keep my attention on Serena. Her gaze meets mine again, sharp and unwavering. “He thinks he can break you by turning your own disciples against you. He thinks the Prophet can strip you down to nothing and rebuild the Brotherhood in his name.”
“He’s wrong,” I say. “He will not rebuild anything.”
Serena’s hand lifts slightly, almost to reach for me, but she stops before she makes contact. Still, the intent lingers in the air like a touch that didn’t quite happen. “Then we go to the courtyard,” she says quietly. “But under our terms, not theirs.”
I study her for a long moment, absorbing the force of her resolve. Every instinct in me wants to shield her from what’s coming, but she has already chosen her place in this war. I nod.
“We move through the storage hallway and flank them from the side,” I say. “They won’t expect us to approach from the blind corner near the generator room.”
Luca nods, already in motion. “I’ll gather a small team.” “No,” I say sharply. “Just us.”
Luca stops, startled. “Adrian...”
“I need stealth, not numbers,” I say. “And Serena stays with me.”
Serena straightens with a subtle, burning pride that ignites something deeper in my chest. Luca hesitates but ultimately nods.
We slip through the narrow back corridor, the dim lighting casting long shadows along the concrete walls. Serena moves with silent precision beside me, her presence a steady force at my periphery. The tension between us has shifted again, less emotional, more tactical, but still laced with the relentless pull we cannot escape.
As we near the generator room, the sound of Marcus’s voice grows louder, echoing through the courtyard. Serena presses her back against the wall beside me, her body close enough that the warmth of her breath brushes my jaw. Her eyes lift to mine, steady and fierce.
“Whatever happens out there, we stay together,” she says quietly.
The declaration hits me with an intensity I did not anticipate. I lean closer, lowering my voice until my breath grazes her ear. “Always.”
Her eyes darken, not with fear but with something rawer, deeper, and dangerously intimate. For a moment, the war outside the walls feels secondary to the war inside my chest.
We slip out the side door, keeping low behind the row of stacked crates lining the courtyard. The Prophet’s men stand in a formation that is too tight, too confident. They expect me to approach the main gate, not come from behind. Marcus continues to call out for my surrender, unaware of how close I already am.
Serena touches my arm lightly, signaling that she has spotted one of their snipers on the roof. Her fingers linger for a fraction longer than necessary, sending a quiet surge of heat through me. She mouths the trajectory and I nod.
The moment I move, everything erupts.
A single suppressed shot cracks through the courtyard as Serena eliminates the sniper with precision so clean it nearly steals my breath. Before Marcus’s men can react, I step out from behind the crates and fire at the two closest soldiers, dropping them instantly. The courtyard erupts into chaos.
Marcus shouts orders, but panic breaks through his discipline. Serena moves beside me with lethal grace, each motion fluid and controlled. She fires, reloads, and fires again, her movements syncing with mine as though we have trained together for years. Gunfire echoes against the concrete walls, and one by one, the Prophet’s men fall.
Marcus realizes too late that he is exposed. He fires blindly in our direction, the bullets sparking against the metal crates. Serena ducks beside me, her breath harsh and fast, her shoulder pressing against mine. I steady her, my hand pushing her gently behind a pillar before I pursue Marcus.
He flees toward the gate, but I catch him before he reaches the exit. I force him to the ground and press the barrel of my gun against his skull. His breath comes in harsh, frantic bursts.
“The Prophet promised...” he begins, but I push the barrel harder, silencing him instantly.
“The Prophet promised betrayal,” I say. “And you accepted it.”
He trembles beneath me, fear finally cracking through his arrogance. “He said you were compromised. He said you were...”
“He lied,” I cut in. “And you were foolish enough to believe him.”
Before he can speak again, I strike him across the jaw with the gun. His body goes limp. The courtyard is silent again.
Behind me, Serena lowers her weapon slowly, her chest rising and falling with the remnants of adrenaline. Her gaze finds mine across the open space, and the connection between us holds with a force that pulls the world back into focus.
I cross the courtyard to her, and the moment I reach her, she steps closer, her breath still unsteady, her eyes burning with intensity. She reaches up as if to touch my face but stops inches away.
“You could have been killed,” she says softly, her voice trembling with restrained emotion.
“So could you,” I reply. Her hand finally makes contact, resting along my jaw with a gentleness that contrasts sharply with the violence around us. The heat of her touch moves through me in a slow, consuming wave.
“We’re not done,” she whispers.
“No,” I say, my voice low. “This was only the beginning.” The Prophet took his first step. Now it is my turn.
