Chapter 218 Book 2 CHPT 50: EPILOGUE
ALINA’S POV
The mornings here always begin quietly.
Not the kind of silence that feels empty, but the kind that feels full. Full of breath, of life, of something steady that doesn’t rush you out of bed or demand anything from you.
I sat on the wooden porch, one hand wrapped around a warm cup of coffee, the other resting absentmindedly on the gentle curve of my stomach.
The early sun stretched across the fields in soft gold, touching everything it reached with a kind of calm I had once thought I would never feel again.
Five months.
I was five months pregnant with our second child.
Sometimes I still had to pause and let that settle in properly, because there was a time I wasn’t sure I would even survive the first.
A soft breeze passed through, lifting the edges of my dress and brushing against my skin. It carried the scent of earth, fresh and clean, mixed with the faint sweetness of growing crops.
And laughter.
I smiled before I even turned.
Out in the field, Valentino stood with our son, both of them already covered in dirt like they had declared war on the soil itself.
Matteo’s laughter rang out again, high and bright, the kind that made your chest ache in the best way.
He held onto a small watering can that was clearly too big for him, struggling to tilt it properly while Valentino crouched beside him, guiding his hands with patience I still found hard to believe sometimes.
“Slowly, bambino,” Valentino said, his voice softer than I had ever known it to be. “You don’t flood it. You give it just enough.”
Matteo ignored half of that instruction and poured too much anyway.
Water spilled everywhere.
He clapped like he had just done something extraordinary.
Valentino laughed, a real laugh, open and unguarded, and I felt something warm spread through my chest at the sound of it.
This man… this same man who once carried the weight of an empire on his shoulders, who lived surrounded by danger and control, now stood barefoot in a field, teaching his son how to water plants like it was the most important job in the world.
If someone had told me this would be our life, I wouldn’t have believed them.
Not then.
But now… I was living it.
I took a slow sip of my coffee, my eyes never leaving them.
Finally, I’m living the life I have always wanted. Nobody knows where we are, not even Giulia and Dante.
Speaking of Dante, he had officially taken over the Don title a year ago. The Romano empire is now at peace, no bloodshed or violence, just peace.
Matteo suddenly turned, spotting me on the porch.
“Mama!” he shouted, his small voice full of excitement.
Before I could even respond, he dropped the watering can and started running toward me, his tiny legs moving as fast as they could carry him.
Valentino straightened, shaking his head with an amused smile before following behind at a much slower pace.
I set my cup aside just in time to catch Matteo as he collided into me, wrapping his small arms around me like he hadn’t seen me in days instead of minutes.
“Careful,” I laughed softly, holding him close. “You’re going to knock Mama and your little sister over.”
He pulled back just enough to look at my stomach, placing his small hand on it like he always did.
“Lil sister,” he said seriously.
My heart melted instantly.
“Yes, baby,” I whispered, brushing his hair back gently.
“Your little sister.”
He nodded like that made perfect sense, then leaned forward and pressed his cheek against my stomach.
I looked up just as Valentino reached us.
His gaze met mine, and for a moment, everything else faded the way it always did when it was just us.
There was no tension in his eyes anymore.
Just warmth and pure love.
“You’ve been sitting here too long,” he said, his voice dropping low as he stepped closer.
“You should be resting.”
“I am resting,” I replied, smiling. “I’m watching my boys make a mess of your farm.”
“Our farm,” he corrected gently.
I raised a brow.
“Is it? Because from where I’m sitting, it looks like I’m the only one not covered in mud.”
He smirked, then reached for my hand.
“Come,” he said. “You’re joining us.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” I started, but it was already too late.
Matteo grabbed my other hand, pulling eagerly.
“Come, Mama!”
I sighed, but I was already smiling as they led me off the porch and into the field.
The grass was soft beneath my feet, the earth warm from the sun.
Valentino kept a careful hand on me the entire time, making sure I didn’t fall.
The moment we stepped in properly, Matteo immediately bent down, scooped water with his hands, and splashed it toward us.
It hit Valentino first.
Then me.
I gasped.
Valentino froze for exactly one second before narrowing his eyes at our son.
“Oh, you think that’s funny?” he said.
Matteo squealed in excitement as Val picked up his own can.
What followed was chaos.
Water splashing everywhere, laughter filling the air, Valentino chasing Matteo around while I tried, unsuccessfully, to stay out of it.
I didn’t last long.
A splash hit me again, and that was it.
I joined in.
At some point, we all ended up breathless, soaked, and laughing too hard to stand properly.
Valentino pulled me down gently, making sure I landed safely as we lay back in the grass.
Matteo climbed between us, still giggling, his small body warm against mine.
The sky stretched endlessly above us, wide and blue, the kind of view that made everything else feel small.
Valentino reached for my hand, intertwining his fingers with mine.
I turned my head slightly, looking at him, then at our son, then back at the sky.
And for a moment, I just let myself feel it.
All of it.
The love, peace, and joy.
Valentino squeezed my hand gently and Matteo shifted closer.
“This…” I whispered softly, my voice almost lost in the breeze.
“…is everything I ever wanted.”
THE BEAUTIFUL END……….
