Chapter 28 What a night

Chapter 28 What a night
The moment we stepped into the bedroom, something shifted in him.

He stepped closer, his eyes sweeping over me with a heat that made my breath catch. His fingers brushed my waist as he leaned in, voice low and warm against my ear.

“You look unbelievable tonight.”

The compliment hit harder than it should have. I felt the blush rise instantly, and he noticed — of course he noticed — his lips curving into a faint, knowing smile.

He reached for the zipper on my dress and slowly pulled it down. The dress fell off my shoulders. Before I could even think, he easily picked me up and put me down on the bed.

I didn’t tell him it was my first time. I couldn’t.
Not when the moment felt too fragile, too charged, too easy to break with the wrong words. I didn’t want him to hesitate or see me differently.

When he moved toward his jacket, I knew exactly what he was reaching for.

And I stopped him.

My hand closed around his wrist before I even realized I’d moved. He looked at me, startled, searching my face for the reason.

“I’ll get the pill,” I said quietly.

I shouldn’t have — not as a doctor, not as someone who knew better — but logic had left the room the moment he walked through my door.

He hesitated for a moment, giving me space to change my mind.

I didn’t.

And when he came back to me, everything slowed.

He kissed me with a tenderness that made my chest ache, his hands moving over me with a kind of reverence that felt almost unreal. Every brush of his fingers, every whispered word, every moment of closeness felt like he was trying to show me something.

It was not just desire, but care, attention and devotion.

He didn’t know it was my first time. But somehow, he treated me like it mattered.Like I mattered.

And the way he held me, the way he moved with me, the way he made sure I felt safe and wanted — it was more than I ever imagined my first time could be.

My heartbeat was still settling, my thoughts still scattered, but instinct kicked in. I slipped out of the bed and headed to use the bathroom, just to be safe and avoid infection.

I didn’t look back, but I felt his eyes on me.

When I came back, he was lying on his back, one arm behind his head, the other resting loosely on the sheets. His chest rose and fell in slow, steady breaths, but his eyes were still on me the moment I stepped back into the room.

I just slipped back into the bed and rested my head on his chest. His arm came around me automatically, pulling me closer with a gentleness. For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The silence wasn’t awkward. It wasn’t heavy. It was… peaceful.

We understood that we had changed things between us and didn't know the future. However, being here like this, now, is all we need.

The front door creaked open, and I froze mid‑breath.
Sarah.
Of all nights…
Of all moments.... No, no,no..

My heart slammed against my ribs as her footsteps echoed towards my room. I hadn’t even locked the front door. Or my bedroom door. And if she walked in right now — if she saw Marco in my bed, shirtless, hair a mess, looking like every secret I’d been hiding — I would never hear the end of it.

“Em? You home?”

I shot upright so fast I nearly fell off the bed. Marco blinked at me, confused for half a second — then realization dawned, and he burst into a silent laugh.

“Not funny,” I hissed

He lifted both hands in mock innocence, but the laughter in his eyes was unmistakable.

I grabbed my pajamas, hopping on one foot as I tried to pull them on. Marco watched like I was the most entertaining thing he’d seen all week.

“Emily?” Sarah called again. “Why is the door unlocked? Are you okay?”

Sarah’s footsteps grew louder. She was almost at my door.

I sprinted to the bedroom door and locked it just as she reached it. The handle jiggled.

“Em? You never lock your door. What’s going on?”

Marco mouthed, Busted.

I glared at him, then cracked the door open just enough to slip out. “Hi,” I said, breathless

Behind me, the bed creaked. Marco had moved.

I slammed the door shut before she could hear anything else.

“Why was your door locked?” she asked, voice tight with concern.

I forced a smile, hoping it didn’t look as guilty as it felt.
“I was… changing.”

Her eyes narrowed.
“Changing what? Your entire personality? You never lock your door.”

I swallowed, trying to keep my expression neutral.
Behind me, through the door, I could almost feel Marco’s presence —very much still in my bed. The thought alone made my pulse spike again.

“I’m fine,” I said quickly. “Just… needed a minute.”

Sarah stepped closer, lowering her voice.“Em, are you sure? You look… flushed.”

Of course I did. I probably looked like someone who had just sprinted a marathon and then tried to pretend nothing happened.

I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, trying to look casual. “Long day,” I said. “I wasn’t expecting anyone.”

She studied me for a long moment, suspicion flickering in her eyes. Then her gaze drifted past me — toward the closed bedroom door.

My stomach dropped.

“Is someone here?” she asked

My heart slammed so hard I thought she might hear it.

“No,” I said too fast. “No. Why would someone be here?”

She raised an eyebrow. “That’s what I’m asking.”

Behind the door, the bedsheets rustled — the soft, unmistakable sound of someone shifting their weight.
