Chapter 66
I stared at the woman in front of me in shock, almost thinking I must have heard wrong.
Alice looked at me with a flash of disdain in her eyes.
Then she stroked her elegant red curls and walked up to me.
She was taller than me, and her shoulders were broader too.
I instinctively took a step back. Seeing my reaction, Alice rolled her eyes.
She held out her hand, admiring her bright red manicure, and said to me in an unfriendly tone, "I don't know why Mr. Moretti ended up choosing a country bumpkin like you to marry, but I'm warning you, don't even think about keeping Mr. Moretti all to yourself."
I shook my head, feeling a pain in my chest.
I knew I was upset because of Kane's betrayal.
But didn't Kane say before?
After we got married, I just needed to have his children, and for everything else, we'd each do our own thing. Thinking about this made me feel sad.
But I didn't want to cry in front of Alice. I tried hard to hold it in, and my breathing got heavier.
Alice continued, "When you weren't around, I was the one who spent the most time with Mr. Moretti. Even now, he still comes to see me. Today is my birthday."
I opened my mouth, remembering Bandel's sudden, somewhat urgent phone call.
My eyes started to turn red.
So was everything that happened at Tina's yesterday just an act?
He just wanted to put his mother's mind at ease, to let her know he had a wife.
But what that wife thought didn't matter.
Tears fell from my eyes again, and my breathing became rapid.
Seeing me cry, Alice looked like she'd found an interesting toy.
She stared at me expressionless, but the mockery in her eyes was unstoppable.
She said to me, "What are you crying about? You took the position I've always dreamed of, getting to appear with Mr. Moretti at any occasion. Don't act all innocent after getting what you want."
I lowered my head and shook it desperately. This wasn't the life I wanted.
I used to think I could accept Kane being with other women, but now I realized it hurt so much.
Could I have fallen in love with Kane earlier than I thought?
I shook my head.
I couldn't love Kane. With his power and status, he would definitely have countless women around him.
Just like this beautiful, bold redhead standing in front of me right now.
He would leave me sooner or later.
Thinking about this, my breathing became difficult.
Alice watched my emotional changes, a smile forming at the corner of her mouth.
She moved closer, saying to me with a challenging tone, "If you know what's good for you, get lost now. When Mr. Moretti comes back and sees you here, he'll probably think you're stalking him, right? You won't get anything good out of that."
I wanted to argue back, to say that Kane had asked me to come.
But when I saw Alice's cold eyes and her confident smile, I couldn't speak.
What did Kane really mean?
If he asked me to bring him a late-night snack, that meant he didn't mind me coming over.
Did that mean he also didn't mind me knowing about him and Alice?
My mind was a complete mess right now.
The happiness at the farm yesterday and this cold reality kept intertwining in my mind. My head was starting to hurt.
Suddenly, there was movement at the door.
I saw Alice's expression change dramatically.
She snapped at me coldly, "Do you still want to see Mr. Moretti now? If you pretend nothing happened, maybe he'll still maintain the appearance of being married to you, and you can keep enjoying your wealth and comfort. But if he catches you here, maybe even those surface things will be gone."
Actually, Alice wasn't wrong.
I should listen to her, hide now, and pretend not to know whatever happens next.
Then wait for them to finish and leave this place.
But my legs felt like they were filled with lead. I couldn't move.
I wanted to see Kane. I wanted to hear him say these things to me himself.
Seeing me standing still, Alice looked even more panicked.
She even reached out to pull at me, trying to shove me into a nearby closet.
But just as she was about to touch me, I heard a cold rebuke, "Stop! What are you doing?"
Then I was pulled into a familiar embrace.
When I smelled that familiar cologne mixed with a faint tobacco scent on Kane, my emotions finally couldn't be controlled anymore.
I buried my head in his collar and cried silently.
Kane felt my sobbing and looked a bit flustered.
He held me, coaxing me gently, "It's not what you think, Sonya. I think you'll believe me, right?"
Kane's flustered explanation left me confused.
I frowned and pointed at Alice, saying, "She's one of your lovers, isn't she?"
Kane glanced at her. I'd never seen such heavy killing intent from Kane before.
Alice seemed scared of Kane. She took a step back, then gathered her courage and stepped forward, as if trying to grab Kane's clothes.
But Kane directly avoided her and shouted coldly behind him, "Bandel, come here."
Bandel appeared immediately.
The moment he saw Alice, Bandel's expression changed too. He scolded harshly, "Who told you to come here?"
Alice looked very wronged. She looked at Kane and said softly, "Mr. Moretti, didn't you use to love having me keep you company at night? You said my skin was as smooth as silk, that you could never get enough of it."
The moment Kane heard Alice speak, he first instinctively looked at me.
Seeing that I didn't have any particular expression, he then coldly rebuked Alice, "I remember I already gave you enough money before and told you not to bother me again. It seems you don't like peaceful solutions."
After Kane said this, Alice's expression changed dramatically.
I saw deep fear in her eyes.
Could Kane's lovers also be afraid of Kane?
Thinking this, I couldn't help but laugh at myself.
When I first met Kane, I was terrified of him, too.
Alice bit her lip unwillingly.
She knelt down in front of Kane, "Mr. Moretti, I'm the one who's been by your side the longest. You said no one understands you better than I do."
Kane seemed amused by anger. He stared at her and said word by word, "I used to like you because you knew your place, because you wouldn't appear in front of people you shouldn't appear in front of. But now you've caused my wife to misunderstand, so it seems I don't need to keep you around anymore."
With that, Kane snapped his fingers.
Then Bandel came forward with a group of men in black.
Alice screamed, "No, Kane, you can't do this to me. I'm pregnant with your child."
In an instant, the atmosphere went quiet. Everyone's expression froze, including mine.
I lifted my head from Kane's embrace and stared wide-eyed at Alice's stomach.
She was slender, but her belly did seem slightly rounded.
Seeing that Kane didn't have her thrown out, Alice lifted her chin proudly.
She smiled at me slightly and said, "Yes, that's right. I'm pregnant, and I'm already three months along."
I could hear that Alice was very happy.
But I could also feel that Kane had reached a state of extreme anger.
