Chapter 42

Chapter 42

Kane's sudden question made me blurt out what was really on my mind.

"I thought you got this scent from another woman, and I was a bit upset. I didn't expect it was perfume you bought for me."

After saying that, I quickly covered my mouth.

Oh my god, how did I say that out loud?

I carefully watched Kane's expression, afraid he would think I was being unreasonable for saying such things.

But unexpectedly, after hearing what I said, Kane's eyes suddenly lit up.

He looked at me, the corners of his mouth lifting uncontrollably.

I was about to say something when suddenly his arm wrapped around my waist.

Then my body was suspended in the air as Kane lifted me up.

The sudden weightlessness made me cry out in surprise.

I looked down at Kane's delighted expression and couldn't help but lightly pat his shoulder.

"You scared me."

Only then did Kane seem to come back to his senses. He gently put me down, with a hint of embarrassment in his eyes.

This was the first time I'd seen Kane show such an expression.

I found it quite fascinating and blinked at him.

Kane seemed a bit different from usual. I tentatively asked, "You seem really happy."

"You're jealous. Of course I'm happy."

My mouth opened slightly, disbelief showing in my eyes.

Kane was actually happy that I was jealous of him.

This left me a bit at a loss.

I stared at Kane blankly as he stepped forward, cupping my face, his deep eyes reflected in mine.

"My wife is jealous of me. Shouldn't that make me happy?"

But I blurted out in response, "But didn't you tell me before that I just needed to have your child?"

Wasn't Kane basically saying back then not to bother him? That we should just live our separate lives?

Hearing this, something I couldn't quite read flashed in Kane's eyes.

He touched his nose, seeming to think about what to say to me.

Bandel spoke up from behind us at that moment, "Actually, Mr. Moretti has always been someone who says the opposite of what he means. Plus, his environment doesn't allow him to always tell the truth, otherwise someone might use his honest words to do bad things to him."

I looked at Kane in surprise and blinked.

Was that really the case?

I asked, "So when you said those things to me, it was just to keep others from knowing?"

Kane glanced at Bandel and said with a smile, "He's not wrong, but I was more worried that someone who didn't like me would use you against me."

Kane told me a story from his past.

Once, Kane had a puppy he really loved. His father didn't want him to keep the dog.

That time, Kane insisted on keeping it and even had a fight with his father.

In the end, the puppy stayed.

Kane was really good to the dog.

He brushed its fur every day and fed it the finest food.

But one day, the dog disappeared.

In the dog's bed was just a note that read: [If Kane wants his dog back, he needs to go to a certain place.]

Kane went, of course. But this trip brought him big trouble.

Kane's dog had already been tortured to death.

When he arrived at the address on the note, he only saw the dog's skinned pelt and chunks of flesh everywhere.

Although Kane could accept the killings that came with his family business, seeing his beloved dog treated this way made him lose his mind for a moment.

That's when people from a rival gang came out of nowhere and kidnapped Kane.

During that period, Kane suffered some very painful torture and abuse.

So after that incident, Kane never showed his weaknesses to others again.

Hearing Kane say this, I felt sad.

So what he said that day was actually to protect me.

My expression became complicated.

"So you're saying I can be jealous, right?" When I asked this, I was still a bit cautious.

I was afraid I'd misunderstood Kane's meaning. But unexpectedly, Kane nodded seriously, his eyes full of tenderness.

"You're my wife, the person who will be with me for life. Of course, you can be jealous."

Kane's hand gently stroked my head. "You can even forbid me from associating with any other women."

Kane's words definitely moved my heart.

My heartbeat suddenly quickened, and even my breathing became beyond my control.

I felt I shouldn't be so easily charmed by Kane, but when he said this, I really couldn't help it - my heart was racing, and my face was flushed.

I swallowed and looked at Kane hesitantly, finally asking the question that was in my heart cautiously.

"Can I really trust you?"

Kane didn't get angry at my question. He tilted his head and asked me back, "Why can't you trust me? From when we met until now, I don't think I've ever lied to you about anything."

I thought about it. From when Kane and I met until now, he really hadn't deceived me about anything.

I closed my eyes, steadied my breathing, and finally showed Kane a bright smile.

"If that's the case, then I think maybe we can get along well in the days to come."

That was a rare heart-to-heart conversation between Kane and me.

Hearing my words, Kane reached out and held me in his arms.

In front of others, without the emotional intensity from before, I felt quite embarrassed and wanted to pull away.

But Kane held me tighter and even carried me upstairs.

I looked at Bandel and Athena, who were watching with teasing expressions, and couldn't help but blush with shyness.

I thought Kane was going to do that kind of thing again, but unexpectedly, he just gently placed me on the bed.

Kane lay beside me, reaching out to stroke my hair.

"Your hair looks so much smoother than when you first came to the house."

I unconsciously reached up to touch my own hair.

The straw-like dry hair from before had become much smoother, even feeling cool and silky to the touch.

This was all thanks to Athena, who spent more than three hours every day brushing my hair.

She also used lots of essential oils and conditioner on my hair, and washed it with special spring water each time.

That's what made my hair become so smooth in such a short time.

Kane touched my hair like he'd found a new toy, his fingers gently circling on it. He seemed quite fond of it.

"You've also gained some weight recently, and your skin has improved, too. Keep it up, okay?"

Kane's tone was like he was comforting a child.

I nodded shyly, showing that I understood.
