Chapter 220

Chapter 220

Even though Elise had looked in the mirror that morning, she hadn't noticed the finger marks on her face. When Matthew exposed this, her expression immediately turned panicked, and she quickly covered her face with her hands, "there are finger marks on my face?"

Matthew was actually just tricking her. Although she still denied it, her expression had already told Matthew the truth.

"It really was that bastard Zander! He dared to hit my woman—he's asking for death!"

After saying this, Matthew turned to leave.

Elise's heart tightened. She quickly walked around Matthew, spreading her arms to block his way, "what are you doing?"

Matthew's eyes were bloodshot, his teeth clenched, "I'm going to find Zander!"

"What for!" Elise glanced at Atticus, who was sitting on the bed looking shocked. "Come with me!"

Elise pulled Matthew along, dragging him all the way to the balcony at the end of the hallway.

"What are you doing? Going after Zander in front of the child? Do you know how much this affects him?"

"I really shouldn't have agreed to let you come take care of him!"

Matthew said, "letting Atticus know what kind of person Zander is isn't a bad thing! Let him know that only his real father can protect him!"

Elise said angrily, "I get it now. You don't actually care about me—you just want to use this chance to win Atticus's favor, right?"

Matthew's eyes widened, looking at Elise in disbelief, "if I didn't care about you, would I be this angry? Elise, is there something wrong with your brain?"

Elise was firm, "you can't go after Zander. This is just between the two of us, you don't need to get involved! He and I are engaged. It's normal for couples to have little conflicts sometimes! You don't need to stick your nose in!"

Elise's distant words made Matthew gasp. So he was just sticking his nose in!

"Don't forget, Elise, your real name is Amelia. You and I haven't dissolved our marriage yet. You're still my wife. If I don't allow it, you and Zander can't get married at all! My wife won't be hit by another man—absolutely not! He didn't just hit you, he hit Matthew's face, the Moore family's face!"

Elise shouted, "is there anything in your heart besides face? Is face really that important?"

A tender light flashed in Matthew's eyes, "besides face, I also can't stand seeing the woman I love being hit by another man. Never!"

Elise's expression froze. Those words were so powerful! What woman wouldn't want to hear words like that!

However, Elise quickly snapped out of it and snorted coldly, "save that sweet talk for Mia. I'm not a little girl anymore!"

"I'm telling you one more time—you can't go after Zander! Otherwise, I'll make sure you never see Atticus again! I'll take Atticus and disappear!"

Matthew's anger was completely ignited. He suddenly grabbed Elise's neck, glaring at her viciously, "you dare?"

Elise looked at Matthew fearlessly, "you can try and see."

Matthew was silent for a long time, finally compromising and releasing Elise, "fine, I promise you. I won't go after Zander this time. But this is the last time! If there's a second time, I'll pay him back ten times over!"

Matthew turned and left. Only then did Elise breathe a sigh of relief.

After that, Matthew and Elise had no communication. He asked Atticus a few questions, then left the hospital to go to work at the company.

That afternoon, Matthew met with a private detective on the roadside. The driver followed the detective's directions to an apartment complex.

When the apartment door opened, a young woman's face appeared—she looked about twenty-five. She was very surprised to see Matthew and the others, with wariness mixed in with her surprise, "who are you looking for?"

Without asking permission, the private detective walked in.

Then came Matthew's bodyguards, then Matthew.

"What are you doing? Who are you people?" the woman shouted in panic. "If you don't leave, I'm calling the police!"

The private detective looked around the room. It seemed she lived alone. He laughed coldly, "go ahead and call the police. We'd love for you to call them. Let's see how you explain the kindergarten incident when they arrive!"

The woman's face went pale. She nervously looked at Matthew and the others, "what kindergarten incident? I don't know what you're talking about!"

Matthew signaled the bodyguard to close the door, then stared at the woman coldly and sharply, "Verity, you know exactly what you did! All you can do now is tell me the truth honestly. Otherwise, think about what will happen when the police find out!"

The private detective said sternly, "over a hundred children hospitalized, seven or eight of them in intensive care. Think about it—how many years would you get for a crime like that?"

Verity's whole body went cold. Her eyes blankly swept over Matthew and the others, "who are you people?"

Matthew spoke slowly, word by word, "you don't have the right to ask who we are. Either tell us the truth or we hand you over to the police!"

Verity's face turned ashen. After a long silence, she finally asked quietly, "what do you want to know? Yes, I did it!"

Before she finished speaking, Matthew rushed up to her and slapped her hard, "hurting children—are you even human?"

Matthew hadn't expected that the person who poisoned the children's food would be such a sweet-looking woman!

Verity suddenly broke down emotionally, crying loudly, "what choice did I have! My mom's in the hospital waiting for money! You're all rich people—you don't know what it's like to be poor! You don't know how a few thousand dollars, tens of thousands of dollars can drive someone crazy! When someone's pushed to the edge, they can do anything!"

Matthew slapped her hard again, knocking Verity onto the sofa, "now tell me—who paid you to do this?"

Verity raised her chin, showing a stubborn defiance like she was ready to die. The corner of her bleeding mouth even curved into a mocking smile, "they gave me money so my mother could pull through. I swore on my mother's life that I wouldn't betray them! If you want revenge for the children, just kill me now!"

Matthew and the private detective exchanged glances.

The detective came over and spoke quietly with Matthew, "from the look of her, she really won't talk!"

Matthew clenched his fists, his eyes bloodshot, "she has to pay the price!"

"She hurt innocent children. I want her to experience what it's like to never have children!"

Verity's face immediately showed panic, "what are you going to do?"

Matthew said coldly, "you hurt children, so you should face the punishment of never having children! I'll call a doctor to come perform a sterilization surgery on you!"

"No, no!" Verity's body went weak. She knelt before Matthew, grabbing his leg. "Please, don't do this, okay? I had no choice!"

Matthew didn't listen to her explanation anymore and gave orders to the bodyguard, "Verity is in your hands. You need to watch her until the doctor arrives!"

The bodyguard nodded, "got it!"

Matthew and the private detective left the room and entered the elevator.

"Mr. Moore, maybe..." the private detective wanted to plead for Verity. "The person behind this is the one who's truly unforgivable!"

Matthew's face was cold and merciless, "the mastermind is definitely the most unforgivable, but Verity is too!"

The detective knew he couldn't persuade Matthew and could only sigh, "alright! Next, I think we should still have someone follow Verity, see who she contacts, so we can catch the mastermind!"
