Chapter 52 The Truth Unravels
Chapter 52 The Truth Unravels
Luna's POV
I woke up in a hospital bed with fluorescent lights too bright and Damien sitting in the chair beside me looking like he hadn't moved in hours.
My wolf felt distant and depleted, like she'd been wrung out and left to dry, but she was still there.
Still intact.
"How long was I out?" My voice came out rough.
"Six hours." Damien leaned forward, relief flooding his face. "The doctors said your wolf will recover fully but it'll take time."
"Sarah and the baby?"
"Stable. Both going to survive." He handed me water that I drank gratefully. "You did it."
The healing came back in fragments, the cold hungry energy of what I'd thought was a hybrid child, Sarah's screaming, the hours of channeling power until I collapsed.
And then her confession that the baby wasn't supernatural at all.
"It was all theater," I said. "Vivienne made Sarah think she was carrying something special, poisoned her to create symptoms, and orchestrated the whole crisis."
"To force you into healing her, yes." Damien's expression was grim. "But that wasn't the only goal."
"What do you mean?"
"My investigators worked through the night. They found something." He pulled out his phone and showed me footage. "During the healing, someone accessed the hospital's security system remotely and copied all the footage from Sarah's room."
I watched grainy video of myself with my hands on Sarah's belly, glowing with Blessed Wolf energy that was clearly visible on camera.
My stomach dropped. "Vivienne has proof I used supernatural abilities in a human medical facility."
"Documented, time-stamped proof." Damien set down the phone. "Using supernatural powers in human spaces without council approval is technically illegal. Minor violations get overlooked but publicly healing others can trigger investigations."
"So she has leverage." I closed my eyes, exhaustion and understanding hitting me at the same time. "She can use this footage for blackmail or actually file charges with the supernatural council."
"Yes."
"Theo's dream was right. Something important changed." I laughed without humor. "I exposed my Blessed Wolf nature in a legally questionable way and now Vivienne has evidence she can use against me whenever she wants."
"The trap was never about saving Sarah. It was about creating this exact situation."
I wanted to be angry but I was too tired. "She's always three steps ahead. Even when I know it's a trap, I still walk right into it."
"You saved two lives."
"And gave Vivienne exactly what she wanted." I looked at him. "When does this end? When do I stop being her puppet?"
Before Damien could answer, someone knocked on the door.
Marcus appeared, looking subdued and smaller than I'd ever seen him. "Luna. Can I come in?"
I nodded, too tired to care about making him uncomfortable.
He stood at the foot of my bed, his hands clasped like he didn't know what to do with them. "Thank you. For Sarah and the baby. I know I have no right to ask anything from you, but you did it anyway."
"I didn't do it for you."
"I know. But thank you anyway." He took a breath. "Sarah wants to speak with you. If you're willing. She's in her room down the hall."
I looked at Damien who gave a small nod like he was saying the choice was mine.
"Okay," I said. "Help me up."
Damien helped me out of bed carefully, my legs shaky but holding. We walked slowly down the hall with Marcus leading the way.
Sarah's room was quieter than the chaos of last night, just her and a few monitors beeping steadily.
She looked diminished somehow, smaller in the bed, her confident cruelty replaced by something that looked like fear.
"Luna," she said when I entered. "You came."
"You asked to see me."
"I wasn't sure you would after—" She gestured vaguely at everything. "After what I did to you and Theo."
I sat in the chair beside her bed, Damien standing behind me. "What do you want to say?"
Sarah's hands twisted the hospital blanket. "I need to tell you everything. About Vivienne and what she asked me to do."
"We already know most of it."
"But you don't know why I agreed." Tears filled her eyes. "Vivienne found me two years ago. I was enforcer for the Northern Pack but I wanted more. I wanted to be Luna, wanted power and status I couldn't get on my own."
"So she offered you Marcus."
"She offered me a path to everything I wanted. Seduce an Alpha, become his Luna, carry a powerful hybrid child that would cement my position." Sarah wiped her eyes. "She said the baby would have abilities no other wolf possessed. That Marcus would give me anything I wanted to protect our child."
"But it was all lies."
"The doctors told me this morning. Pure human genetics. No supernatural abilities at all." Her voice broke. "I alienated a child, destroyed a family, and poisoned my own body for a normal baby. For nothing."
I watched her cry and felt no satisfaction in her suffering.
Just more exhaustion at how thoroughly Vivienne had used everyone.
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.
Sarah looked at me directly. "Because I want to help. I want to testify against Vivienne, to expose everything she did publicly. The payments, the instructions, the manipulation."
"Why would you do that? It destroys your reputation too."
"My reputation is already destroyed. Marcus knows the truth now, the baby has no special powers, and I'm just another wolf who got used and discarded." She sat up slightly. "But I can at least stop Vivienne from doing this to someone else."
I studied her face, searching for the calculation and cruelty I'd seen before.
All I found was fear and something that might have been genuine remorse.
"You understand what testifying means? Vivienne will come after you."
"I'm already a dead woman walking. She poisoned me for weeks. Who knows what long-term damage that caused?" Sarah's hands went to her belly. "But maybe I can do one good thing before she finishes destroying me."
I looked at Damien who raised his eyebrows slightly, leaving the decision to me.
Sarah was offering to become an ally, to expose Vivienne's methods publicly, to give us ammunition we desperately needed.
It was also possibly another trap, another manipulation hidden inside apparent cooperation.
But right now I'd take whatever advantage I could get.
"Okay," I said. "You testify against Vivienne. Full disclosure about everything she asked you to do."
Sarah nodded, relief flooding her face. "Thank you. For saving me and for giving me a chance to make this right."
"Don't thank me yet. Vivienne isn't going to let you betray her without consequences."
"I know." Sarah's voice was quiet. "But I'd rather die fighting her than live knowing I helped her destroy innocent people for a lie."
I stood to leave, my legs still shaky.
"Luna?" Sarah called as I reached the door. "Why did you save me? You had every reason to let me die."
I looked back at her. "Because my son's dreams told me it mattered. And because letting you die would have made me the person Vivienne keeps trying to prove I am."
I left before she could respond, Damien supporting me as we walked back to my room.
Sarah had just become an unexpected ally in a war I still didn't know how to win.
But at least now I had someone on the inside who knew Vivienne's methods and was willing to expose them.
It wasn't much, but it was something.
