Chapter 40 The Hybrid Revelation
Chapter 40 The Hybrid Revelation
Luna's POV
I couldn't stop staring at the medical reports, at numbers and genetic markers that didn't make sense.
Sarah's pregnancy wasn't just non-Marcus genetics. It was something that defied natural law completely. The documents showed abnormalities human doctors had written off as equipment errors or lab contamination.
But supernatural healers would recognize them for what they were, biology that shouldn't exist.
"What exactly is growing inside her?" I asked.
"Something that requires very specific care to survive." Vivienne had stayed near the door, watching my reaction like it entertained her. "The pregnancy will kill Sarah without intervention. The hybrid needs supernatural medical attention that only certain bloodlines can provide."
She paused, letting that sink in.
"Blessed Wolves," I said quietly, understanding hitting me like cold water. "Like me."
"Like you," Vivienne agreed. "Your newly awakened bloodline has healing capabilities that could save both Sarah and the child. Isn't that convenient?"
The trap revealed itself in layers. If I helped Sarah, I proved Vivienne could manipulate my choices. If I refused, an innocent child died and I became the monster everyone already thought I was.
Either way, I lost.
"You planned this from the beginning," I said.
"I planned pieces of it." Vivienne examined her nails casually. "I approached Sarah months before Marcus's affair, offered her money and power in exchange for strategic positioning. Her job was simple, destabilize Marcus's pack, turn Theo against you, and carry a child that would eventually need your help."
"You're using a baby as a weapon."
"I'm using leverage." She looked at me directly. "Everything in war is a weapon if you're creative enough."
Damien stood suddenly, his chair scraping against the floor. His eyes went pure gold and his voice dropped to something barely human. "You involved a child in your sick revenge game. Neutral ground or not, there will be consequences for that."
"Will there?" Vivienne didn't even flinch. "Because last I checked, everything I've done is technically legal within supernatural law. I haven't broken any treaties or violated any territorial agreements. I simply made business arrangements with willing participants."
"You manipulated a pregnancy—"
"I facilitated a pregnancy between two consenting adults." Her voice stayed level. "What happens with that pregnancy afterward isn't my legal responsibility. I'm simply sharing information I thought Luna might find useful."
The casual way she dismissed creating life specifically to use as leverage made my stomach turn.
"Does Marcus know?" I asked. "About what Sarah's really carrying?"
"Of course not. Marcus believes he's having a son, a strong Alpha heir to rebuild his pack legacy." Vivienne smiled. "The truth will destroy him when it comes out. And you, Luna, get to decide when and how that bomb detonates."
She moved toward the door, her point clearly made.
"Think about what I've offered you. Help Sarah and the child lives but you prove I control you. Refuse and watch an innocent baby die because of your pride." She paused at the threshold. "Either way, you lose something important. That's the beauty of a well-designed trap."
"This isn't over," Damien said.
"No, it's just beginning." Vivienne looked back at me one last time. "Oh, and Luna? The person who actually engineered Sarah's pregnancy and provided the supernatural genetics? They're not working for me. I'm simply taking advantage of someone else's scheme. You might want to figure out who before their plans come to fruition."
She left with her guards following, the door closing softly behind her.
I sat there with the medical reports spread in front of me, trying to process everything she'd just revealed. Sarah was carrying a hybrid that would kill her without help. Marcus had no idea he'd been manipulated into creating something dangerous. And somewhere behind all of this was another player I didn't even know about yet.
"She's lying," Damien said, but his voice lacked certainty. "This has to be manipulation."
"The medical records are real." I touched the papers. "These came from actual doctors and labs. Whatever Sarah's carrying, it's not normal."
"That doesn't mean you're responsible for saving it."
"But if I don't and the baby dies—"
"Then that's on Vivienne and whoever engineered this situation, not on you." He moved to stand beside me. "Don't let her guilt you into playing her game."
My phone rang before I could respond.
Catherine answered it first, her expression changing from alert to concerned. She handed it to Damien.
He listened for a moment then his face softened. "We'll be there in twenty minutes."
"What happened?" I asked, standing quickly.
"Theo woke up from a nightmare. He's asking for you and won't calm down." Damien was already moving toward the door. "Your mother tried to comfort him but he only wants you."
Reality crashed back into focus with brutal clarity.
I'd been sitting in an estate playing strategic games with Vivienne, thinking about hybrid pregnancies and revenge plots and ancient Lycan politics, while my actual son was at home scared and needing his mother.
I grabbed my things and followed Damien out to the car, guilt settling heavy in my chest.
I'd spent the evening focused on winning against Vivienne, on proving I was strong enough to stand beside Damien, on handling threats and making strategic choices.
Just like Marcus used to do, putting pack politics and power games above being present for his family.
I'd sworn I would never repeat his mistakes and here I was doing exactly that, so focused on fighting battles that I'd forgotten what I was actually fighting for.
My son needed me and I'd been too busy playing war games with his father's e
nemies to be there when he woke up scared.
