Chapter 62 My Fault
ADRIANA
“I fell.” I muttered the words.
He didn’t hear me.
“What did you say?” the doctor leaned closer to hear me better.
“I said I fell. I fell down from the bench outside.”
He looked at me and just sighed.
“We’ll need to get you a room and then we’ll check you out properly. This needs to be set and casted.” I shook my head but he didn’t look like he was going to listen until he got me to a hospital bed.
Hazel walked up to us then, concern written all over her face.
“What’s going on?” She looked at me closely. “Why is your face like this? You look terrible.”
She moved past the doctor, taking charge.
“Let’s get you a room.”
With resignation, I followed the doctor to the room and they immediately put an IV in my hand. The needle pinched but I barely felt it.
Sleep suddenly took over me and I slowly closed my eyes and went to sleep, grateful for the escape from consciousness.
By the time I woke up, I felt significantly better. The fever had broken and my arm, while still painful, was a lot more manageable.
Hazel was beside me and she was reading a book, her feet propped up on the edge of my bed.
“Hey.” I croaked. My throat felt dry.
She dropped the book immediately and turned to me, relief flooding her face.
“Hey. You’re awake. You want something?”
I pointed to the cup of water beside me and she brought it to me, helping me sit up a little.
“Thank you. What the hell happened? I don’t remember a lot after they brought me here.”
I noticed the white cast on my arm now, going from my hand to my elbow.
“Did he hit me?” I chewed my bottom lip. My eyes becoming teary.
I didn’t like that. I disappointed him and made him that angry.
“What? What did you say? Who hit you?”
Her voice was sharp with concern.
I suddenly felt drowsy again and I couldn’t even open my eyes anymore. They’d probably given me something strong for the pain.
“Elijah. Did he hit me because of what happened? I’m sorry.”
I fell back asleep before I could hear her answer.
ELIJAH
When the doctor said Leo was going to be okay, I was so happy I nearly collapsed with relief. I couldn’t imagine anything happening to him at this point in time when he meant so much to me.
Hazel had come back with the report that it was wolves from Donald’s pack. And I was going to deal with that in due time but right now, I needed to make sure my son was okay.
What happened last night, I couldn’t get it out of my mind.
The way Adriana fell on the ground and crouched, hiding her head in her hands and crying, it melted my heart. I couldn’t bear to see her like that, so broken.
I had no idea that bastard father of hers had laid his hands on her. I thought he only mistreated her emotionally but that wasn’t the case at all.
It made me feel terrible that I had made her relive something as traumatic as that. What kind of man was I?
I wanted to go and hold her and tell her I would never hit her but Hazel beat me to it, wrapping Adriana in her arms.
I felt like I had been punched in the stomach and then things got worse when she ran away, knowing I'd driven her away.
“Do you see what you have caused? It’s all your fault! Why do you have to do that?” Hazel snapped at me.
She looked like an angry goddess, and if this was a cartoon, she would probably be breathing fire.
“My son is in the hospital and it’s all her fault!”
“What did you expect her to do?! You know she doesn’t have her wolf and you know she doesn’t know anything about how to deal with situations like this so what did you expect her to do?! Get stabbed? She could have died but she stayed with him even though she knew she could get killed! You think Leo was the target? She was and she used her body to protect him! Have you seen her arm? Poor thing is so shaken the adrenaline is stopping her from realizing she was cut too.”
It took me a while to process everything Hazel said. She had been cut too. Adriana had been injured.
Hazel walked away to go after her and I wanted to follow but I didn’t think my presence would do any good so I stayed back.
When the doctor came around to tell me Leo would be fine, I’d never felt so happy before.
Then he started talking about Adriana’s arm and the way she looked. I could see it and that was why I’d been looking at her.
Her arm didn’t look fine at all, it looked broken and out of place. She looked flushed with fever and she was shivering but the fact that she was denying it was confusing.
Why was she denying it? Didn’t she want help?
I was about to speak up when Hazel brushed past me and started speaking to the doctor, taking control.
She hadn’t spoken to me since last night when she’d told me off. I watched as they took Adriana away and I stayed until I could see Leo.
He wasn’t awake yet but he was regaining color. His chest rose and fell steadily.
God, I was so happy nothing worse happened to him. The doctor came in then.
“Is everything okay over here?”
“Yes, it’s fine. I was just checking on him. Is he really going to be okay?”
He nodded with a reassuring smile.
“He is. Don’t worry. Kids are resilient.”
I nodded, relief washing over me.
“What about her? The lady you took to the other room?”
“She is doing okay. She had a broken arm and due to the cold, she almost had hypothermia. But she’ll be okay now.”
If anything had happened to her too, it would have been my fault.
