Chapter 60 Nothing Should Happen To My Son

“No!”
It was too late. The knife was already in him and I couldn’t do anything about it. Time seemed to slow down as I watched it happen.
“Whose kid is this? I know it’s not yours so who does this kid belong to?”
I couldn’t even answer her. All my focus was on Leo, on the blood spreading across his shirt.
“Leo, please stay with me baby. Open your eyes, I’m here. I’m here. Mommy’s here. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
The word slipped out without thinking. Mommy. I’d never called myself that before but it felt right at this moment.
“Whose kid is this? Did you have a kid here already?”
Leo’s eyes were closing and I didn’t know what to do. I pressed my hands around the wound, trying desperately to stop the bleeding.
“Somebody help me! Help me!”
She just stood there watching me as I begged for help. She looked almost pleased with herself, like this was exactly what she’d wanted.
I wanted to leave him and run inside to get help but I didn’t trust her not to do something worse to him so I just kept screaming, kept applying pressure.
“Somebody help!” Tears gathered in my eyes as I watched his blood drain to the ground, forming a pool beneath us.
He was barely breathing. His little chest was moving so slightly I could barely see it.
“Shit! Let’s go!” I suddenly heard Lisa shout and I looked up.
They were back. Elijah and Hazel were back. I screamed so they would know something was wrong, so they would come faster.
Lisa needed to pay for what she had done and I wasn’t going to let her get away with it.
It was Elijah and he just stood there looking at me, completely frozen in place.
“Elijah! Help!”
I didn’t know if it was the shock of seeing Leo like that or surprise but he just stayed there and stared at us.
Eventually, I had to shout again for him to move and he finally scooped Leo up in his arms and ran toward the pack doctor’s house.
I followed after him to check on Leo. Elijah’s legs were so fast as he ran, moving faster than I’d ever seen anyone move.
“Doctor! My son, fix him!”
He looked so broken when I caught up. There was a look in his eye I’d never seen before and I could see something was dying inside him.
I didn’t know if I should go to him so I just stood there and waited for the doctor to come back out with news.
How had Lisa gotten into the pack? I knew how hard it was for anyone to infiltrate the guards so what had happened to them?
Now Leo was wounded and Lisa was responsible. But she’d been aiming for me.
But why did I feel so responsible? I should have protected him better. I should have made sure my body shielded him completely.
But she had gotten to him anyway.
I started hearing sobbing and I could see Elijah’s shoulders shaking terribly. The sound was awful, broken. That broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes.
I slowly walked toward him and took a seat beside him on the bench outside the doctor’s office.
“Elijah, it’s going to be—”
“Get away from me!”
I fell to the floor in shock. His eyes were so red and tears were streaming down his face. His vein was bulging out of his neck.
“Stay the hell away from me. If anything happens to my son, you will have to pay for it. I will make sure you regret it, I swear!”
“I’m sorry. I tried to stop her but she didn’t listen. I didn’t know she had a knife. I’m so sorry.”
He crouched down to my level and pointed his finger directly in my face.
“I don’t care what you knew or what you didn’t know. All I know is that nothing should happen to my son or else you will regret it.”
“Elijah!” Hazel called him away and he stood up and walked out, leaving me there on the floor.
She ran to me and held my shoulders, helping me up.
“It’s going to be okay. Don’t cry, don’t cry.”
She held me as I cried, not knowing which pain to feel. Whether the pain of Leo being in the hospital fighting for his life or the fact that Elijah blamed me for it.
I just stayed there sobbing because I didn’t know what to do. If something bad happened to Leo, then I didn’t know what would happen to me.
First, I didn’t think my heart would take it. Leo had become so important to me. But then again, I didn’t want to know what Elijah would do to me if Leo died.
“It’s going to be okay. He’s just mad. He’s scared. He doesn’t mean it.”
The doctor came outside and I rose to my feet immediately, hope and fear warring in my chest.
“Docto—”
Elijah appeared out of nowhere and stepped in front of me, blocking my view and stopping my sentence.
“Where’s my son?”
Now that I wasn’t in his good book, he looked intimidating and I stepped back a bit.
“He is fine. We just have to take him for surgery.”
My heart dropped into my stomach.
“Surgery? Why? You just said he was fine.”
“Yes, after we took the blade out, we were able to stop the bleeding but we need to determine there are no internal injuries. That blade saved his life. If you had taken it out, he would have bled out before you got him here.”
The doctor’s words hit me hard. I was glad I remembered not to pull it out. Even when another part of me urged me to. Because the sight of it was scary.
The doctor walked away to prepare for surgery and I sighed but I couldn’t be relieved yet.
Elijah turned around to look at me, his eyes cold.
“If anything happens to him, you’ll have me to deal with.”
