Chapter 349 New Assignment
ADRIANA
Doctor Jones's professional mask slipped, replaced by a genuine concern that made him look years younger. He held his hands up in a placating gesture as if I were a skittish animal.
"You do look pregnant. I'm not saying you added on weight or anything like that." He chose his words with the precision of a surgeon. "But there are certain things in a woman that I look out for when she's pregnant, and you seem to have some of them."
I was going to ask what they were, but then I knew that it wouldn't be a good move. I would start focusing on those things, and they would become a distraction. It was better if I didn't know.
"Oh, that's fine then." I forced a smile that felt brittle on my lips. "I can assure you though that I'm not pregnant. My last child just started walking and besides, no morning sickness yet and there's nothing to show. So…"
He hesitated before nodding and reaching into his leather bag. "I would like to give you my card, my Queen. In case there's an issue of emergency at any time or if you need help with the baby, give me a call."
Hazel collected the card for me, and I waved him off as he left, his footsteps echoing down the hallway.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Hazel practically danced in front of me, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Isn't he so handsome?"
I barely glanced at her as I turned around and started walking back inside, the doctor's words still rattling around in my mind.
"Forget it. He's in love with Sandy."
"What?! He didn't say that? How do you know that?"
He didn't need to tell me. I noticed things. The way his eyes softened when Sandy's name was mentioned, the slight hesitation before he spoke about her.
I stopped walking abruptly, and her shoulder bumped into mine.
"I thought you were gay."
She opened her mouth to answer, but I raised my finger, cutting her off before she could speak.
"I take that back. Don't worry about it."
Now, we had a new assignment.
"Hazel, leave that doctor alone. You're going back to the coast. We need to find anyone who is related to Alisha." I ran a hand through my hair, frustration mounting. "I don't know how that's going to be possible, but we need to find a brother or mother. Someone who knew Alisha. Or else, we'll never know what happened to her baby or who was the father."
I couldn't believe Alisha was a mother. What sicko would even think of having a kid with her?
"What does it matter to us if she had a child? The child can't help us now."
She was right, but there were still things we needed to cross off our list. We also needed to cover every base. At this point, nothing was too small to be known.
"It doesn't matter. We need to know. As a matter of fact, I'll come with you. It'll be better if I'm there myself. That's if we end up finding anyone."
I wasn't optimistic that we would find anyone who would openly say that they were related to her, but we had to try. We at least had to try.
The next day, we took our time before we left for the coast. We didn't want to rush since we had gone at least a certain length in our investigation, and this time, we were already knee deep in.
It has officially been two months since we'd started investigating. I did have evidence that Alisha was guilty of killing Lucy, I just didn't know who killed Lucy or if she was still alive at all. And it was beginning to seem that Lucy had secrets of her own. I wanted to know if she did give birth to that baby.
"Hazel, the men I asked you to keep on Tobias, have they checked in?"
She looked down at her phone, her fingers flying across the screen. "I haven't called to check in yet."
While she dialed their number, I went back to my chair, my mind racing. I didn't know if Alisha had any other friends besides Lucy. She seemed very dependent on her, especially with the fact that she was also in love with Lucy. I needed to dig deeper into her life and know everything about her. Someone has to know something.
After breakfast, Leo agreed to take Lana so I could leave. As we got into the car, I began to think that maybe we should have let the house earlier so that we would be able to find what we were looking for. This is not like we're going to one house in particular, so we need time to be able to move around and ask questions. But whatever it is, we will do what we can with the time left.
I didn't see Elijah outside as I left the house, but his car was still in the driveway. I wonder why he hadn't gone out this time. He didn't come down to dinner too. He was a very odd man. I figured that if he wanted to talk about what was wrong, he would, and me constantly bringing it up won't change a thing.
"So, I just heard back from the men," Hazel said, breaking the silence. "They tell me that there is a place where Tobias goes to often. It's a house, they don't know who stays there, but he visits it only at night."
Even a stupid person would know that that was suspicious. However, we didn't know who lived in the house.
"Tell them to sit on it. They must not make contact and must not be seen. We'll go in ourselves at night."
Hazel turned around to look at me, her eyes wide. "What are you saying? We'll go and check? We don't know what's in that house. There could be murderers."
I couldn't believe her.
"Are you sure you're the Beta and not the Barbie Princess? Because you're supposed to be the bravest woman in the kingdom."
"I have courage, not an urge to get killed for something that has nothing to do with me. I'd rather the men went in before us."
She did have a point.
"The lesser the people that go in there, the better for us because they might mess things up, and I don't want that."
She eventually saw reason with me, even though she didn't like the fact that we would be going in alone.
We eventually got to the coast about an hour later and started our search. It was hard, given the fact that we didn't know where exactly we were going.
