Chapter 29 White Streak
ELIJAH
Adriana fell asleep after crying for almost an hour.
I watched her as her chest rose and fell and her silent snores filled the room.
I knew she was tired so as soon as she started crying, I brought her to the bed.
I felt bad for her, having to deal with all this and wanting none of it. She was scared, that much was obvious and I couldn't do a thing to help her.
The first shift was something that has to happen naturally and being what she is, it made it worse. I could see that she hadn't the slightest clue what was going on or what it was about.
“Can’t we do something?” I asked Ezra as soon as he told me what was going on.
“What exactly do you want to do? Help her shift? You and I both know you can't do anything.”
“How about we get the doctor? I mean, he can give her something for the pain.”
“And risk messing up? She's no ordinary wolf, Elijah. She's a special wolf. I told you this before.” He said, sounding tired of me.
“Yes, but you didn't tell me much. So forgive me for offering the only help I know.”
The fact that she didn't want me there got me worried because I wanted to be there.
“What is there to tell you? Special wolves appear or rather shift only when a war is about to break out. Which means you have a war to deal with.”
“You say that like we're not one person.”
“I'm not the one on the outside."
Perks of being a wolf.
If what Ezra was saying was right, then that meant that there was impending trouble. That stupid Antil Cult had gone and done it this time and I had to be involved.
In the meantime, I'd gone to Hazel and IDEN and asked them to up their training, to train for war because when it comes knocking, we won't be given a heads up.
I didn't have much information to give them and I also didn't want to tell them about Adriana so I just left it at that.
Luckily, they didn't ask questions.
She was in a very vulnerable state right now and I didn't want to put any attention or pressure on her so when she started crying, I wasn't surprised.
For someone who had never shifted before, and their first time was that painful and traumatic, it was allowed.
I remember my shift. It wasn't anything special. But being the Alpha's kid and the one who's supposed to take over when your father died, it was kind of a big deal and my father pestered me everyday for it.
My wolf came late, a few months after I turned twenty one. But within those few months, he made my life hell. He had to present me to his cabinet as his heir and make me find my mate, or take a wife, whichever happened first. He couldn't do that without me finding my wolf.
So he made life horrible for me. In the time when I was still waiting for Aiden to show up, I was basically his punching bag. When he was in a bad mood, he'd take it out on me and there was no one to save me.
My mother had died from childbirth so it was just me and him.
When I finally got my wolf, things got better. His attitude towards me changed and I was finally living like his kid. So I could understand the pain she had been through up to this moment.
Wolves treated you like trash when they found out that you didn't have your wolf. It's like you're an outcast and no one sees you as anything.
My life was better because although I faced prosecution from my father, other people around still treated me like a human being.
Adriana had been through the worst. The people she'd thought would be there for her weren't and it wasn't like she didn't have family. Her father turned a blind eye to her which made her sister and ex boyfriend make her life hell.
“I’m sorry for bringing you back luck.”
I wanted to tell her that she didn't bring me back luck, that the only thing she had done since I met her was make my life easier but she was sobbing profusely so I doubted she wanted to hear my words of encouragement right now.
I just let her cry while I stood there and held her before taking her to the bed.
I had no idea when we both fell asleep. She was still in my arms by the time I woke up and it was already nightfall.
Why hadn't anyone called for me? Didn't they need me?
I hadn't slept for this long before. My subconscious would have told me that I had a kingdom to run and I would have been up on my feet barely two hours into my sleep.
But I slept for almost twelve hours and I knew that it was because of her.
This was the longest I'd slept in ages. Probably since I became Alpha.
I didn't want to wake her up so I didn't move. I knew that I was going to be here for a while and I didn't mind.
She looked so different now and I knew that it was because she had shifted. Aiden couldn't feel her wolf anymore but he could sense her.
She was around but not communicating. He said it was because she wasn't ready yet but when she was needed she would surface.
I worried for her. Not just because of what she'd been through but because of who she was.
If people found out who she was, then they would come after her and that would not be good.
“That doesn't matter. As many as they may want to be, I'll be there. I'll be there for her.”
Yeah, she doesn't have to be alone anymore.
