Chapter 16 The Witch
"You told me you were going to get things done, we can't keep waiting for her to turn on her own." Lucius said with a hiss, frustration evident in his voice and demeanor.
Maya shook her head, she understood his impatience but she was also on the edge too. The task she had been ordered to carry wasn't an easy one especially since it's very possible for her to loose her life if she gets caught.
"The order needs to be patient, it's not easy for me too, I need more time." She told him pleadingly, casting her eyes around their surrounding to see if they weren't being eavesdropped on. A soft glow of light sat at the base of her palm, making her able to see through the darkness and the scowl on Lucius's face too.
"Time is a luxury we do not have, Eira. The full moon is tommorow. If the girl still doesn't turn then carry on with the plan. Use the vial for heaven's sake." Lucius stated in a whisper, laying emphasis on the vial.
"Act fast or the order will. And you know what that means for you, Eira." He added as he moved closer. "Maya. Do not use my real name here." She whispered back at him in a harsh tone, "If you care so much about your identity then you should also watch the way you use your powers. Someone may see you." Lucius retorted, glancing at the glowing light on her right hand.
"I will do exactly as ordered. You may leave now." Maya said with a cold glare, ignoring his warning.
Lucius retreated back into the shadows but not before giving her a warning glare. A shudder ran through Maya's body, she pulled her cloak closer to her body thinking about the consequences of failing.
Maya had been nervous but ready when she was tasked by the order to monitor Fernanda and provoke the catalyst in her. The order were very strict when it came to the catalyst, nothing else mattered. They've spent years preparing for the arrival of the prophesized one, and now that she is here, Maya didn't want to be the one to ruin everything.
Her heart almost leaped out of her chest when she turned and saw the huge and tall silhouette of a man. His hazel eyes glowed in contrast to the darkness hovering around him. Maya immediately knew who it was from the way she started to panic.
The only person who had that intimidating effect on people asides from Sebastian is Levi Griffin, his beta and the vice-commander of the Clawshirean Army. He was as ruthless, merciless and war driven as Sebastian Kozlov himself.
Maya knew seeing him right there in front of her meant trouble for her. Had he overheard her conversation with Lucius? "I doubt he heard anything, Lucius wouldn't have left here alive likewise me." She thought, racking her brain for all kinds of excuses she could come up with that would make sense.
Levi stood before her with his arms crossed, his face set in a stern expression. He had been feeding his horse in front of the royal stable when he noticed a movement out of the corner of his eye. Unsure of who it might be, he trailed behind the figure to see where they were heading.
Much to his surprise, Levi suddenly lost sight of the cloaked individual, who seemed to have moved with incredible speed or vanished into thin air. He had wanted to leave but the thought of a tiny hooded figure moving suspiciously in the dark was enough to rouse his attention and he wasn't going to leave untill he finds out who it was.
And now he found himself standing face-to-face with the hooded individual, a female and even smaller than he had imagined. But that wasn't what surprised him more, his eyes were fixed on the glow of light on her palm. "Uncloak, now." He silently ordered.
Maya immediately hid her hand behind her as soon as she realized he was looking at it, she shuddered in fear, this was a man who wouldn't hesitate to execute her on the spot if he was given a valid reason to. And she wasn't certain he was going to let her leave there alive considering what he just saw.
"I said remove your cloak, witch." He ordered again when she hesitated but this time in a much more deadlier tone, saying the witch word like it was a slur. His eyes glowed a dark shade of red in the dark, a warning to her. Maya immediately removed her cloak, revealing her face which was already covered in sweat.
The tension in Levi's face immediately went down and was replaced with surprise, "You..." He said when he saw her, wondering what Fernanda's maidservant was doing roaming around in the dark. "What was that?" He demanded with a snarl.
Maya knew there was no point in denying who she was, he had clearly saw her. Witches were rarely seen in the Lycan territory, they weren't particularly enemies to the them but the Lycans still always felt threatened by their abilities.
"Spare me... Please." Was all Maya could muster to say. It would be unwise to try to fight him, Levi was not only faster but stronger and besides, doing that will only jeopardize the order's plans, so she had to be smart in order to escape her current situation.
"You know I can't let you leave here alive, your presence in this kingdom poses a threat. And my duty to the kingdom is to terminate all kinds of threat towards it." He told her, his gaze firmly fixed on her as if he was expecting an attack from her.
"I promise I am not a threat." She stated firmly, her voice thick with desperation. "It doesn't seem so considering the circumstances of our meeting. I will ask you once more witch, what made you come here?"
Maya swallowed. If she lied, he would kill her where she stood. If she told any truth, she risked giving Lucius’s order away. She weighed the options fast, the way only someone who’d learned to survive on very little time could. "Common witch, give me a reason not to execute you right now." Levi thought, his eyes still firmly fixed against hers.
