I AM PATHETIC

"Quick! Are those sacks ready yet?"

"We are still filling them? We are running out of dry sand to fill them. Curse the rain."

The men were busily working and pushing their limits to build the sack wall but so far, they hadn't been successful. The rain was pouring heavily, blurring their vision and even making the river side muddy. The men had to be careful lest they slip and fall into the river, the current were so strong that if they were to fall in the river, they would not survive. These all obstacles made the process slower and difficult.

Alpha Enrique was standing there, watching the men work with a straight face. The river side was huge and the currents were getting stronger. They had to work on the parts where the river was prone to flooding first.

The rain showed no sign of stopping, in fact he felt as if the sky was turning more violent with time.

He looked at the exhausted face of his soldiers, they had been working on this since the morning. He could not even estimate how long they have worked for since the rainy clouds were obstructing the sun, making it difficult for him to predict the time.

He wondered if Licia had eated anything yet.

Back at the castle, Licia was looking outside the window to see if there was any sign of Enrique returning. She looked at the sky and muttered to herself, "It is getting late…"

"Are you worried, Luna?" Polene asked, she had noticed that the Luna was checking outside through the window every now and then, refusing to rest or eat. Licia turned her head and said, "Worried? Of course, I am. I town will flood if the river over flows and I am sure none of them would have eaten a proper meal yet."

She remembered that her husband had left home early, the matter was of such urgency that he didn't even have the time to have his breakfast. It was post afternoon now and the rain was only getting heavier and heavier. She was sure he must be working hard despite his soaked clothes and hunger. He must be covered with mud from head to toe, fighting against his exhaustion to protect his pack but here she was…

"I am pathetic." Licia said slowly grabbing the attention of the housekeeper who was setting up the table for the lunch for her. "Pardon?" She asked to which Licia said, "Everyone, even the Alpha is out there working in the rain to protect the pack but here I am nice and warm, having a good meal. I am the Luna of this pack, I too share the same responsibilities as the Alpha when it comes to the pack."

"I am pathetic because I can't do anything to help them. Even when things are so critical right now, all I can do is sit here and pray that everything is alright."

Polene stared at her Luna for a while before saying, "I have always had this thought since we first met, Luna. You are truly the odd one amongst them all."

"What?" Licia flinched, not understanding what the housekeeper meant.

The woman began to explain herself, "I have served quite a few nobles and family members of Alphas in my life after being born in an Omega household but you are the first one who genuinely cares about her pack and always keeps looking for things to do or fix."

"What I mean is people like you don't 'need' to do anything, Luna. All you have to do is sit in your bed and order, leave the works to servants and Omegas like us. But you, Luna… You clean the castle, check the supplies yourself and even ask how my day was with a smile."

"No memeber of the ruling clan has even bothered to know what I was called, let alone be friendly with me. This is also the first time I have spoken with a Luna while laughing and was given to liberty to speak my mind like this. People like you who are in the upper position don't treat people like me good, they don't even respect us as humans."

"Also, I had the guts to speak so much because it was you. If it was someone else, I might have been beaten and banished from his Pack by now for being disrespectful and crossing m limits."

Polene stopped there and smiled kindly, "My Luna, no one will blame you for not being able to do something this difficult. In fact, you have already done more work than any Luna would do in her entire life for the welfare of her people."

"Just take your time, Luna! All you have to do is work on the things that you can do now. Alpha was really worried when you were down with the fever last night, I saw him up all night, changing the wet cloth on your forehead and taking care of you. If you really want to help him, you need to recover and get healthy."

"Don't be anxious, Luna! Everything will be fine."

Licia was touched by what Polene had said just now, this was the kind of appreciation that she never received from anyone in her life. This reminded her of her mother, she was the only one who used to praise her but that too only if she did an achievement and all her praising would follow up with more pressure to work harder.

She was also well aware of the plight of the Omegas in a werewolf pack; after escaping from the castle she was sold tocthe West Wing Pack as an Omega and she had witnessed more horrors in there than the ones she could have seen in the battlefield.

She was constantly tried to be raped, was beaten up for the entertainment of other members in the pack and given severe punishments over the slightest mistake. She was also sent to Alpha Enrique's castle as his bride just because Anna was not interested in marrying him. She could have been killed if things went wrong but Anna's interest valued more than her life.

This was the sad reality of the society she was living in; Polene was a lot kinder than most of the people she has known all her life but just because she was born into an Omega family, which wasn't even her fault, she was forced to be a slave forever.

Polene served her her lunch and kept her company untill she was done. She checked Licia's temperature to determine that the fever has went down and left after giving her a final dose of the herbs just in case the fever came back.

After she left, Licia was left alone in her room to rest. She heard the thunder rolling outside and her mind was traced back to Enrique and the men who were working by the riverside. She had officially recovered from the fever now and can think about the way to help those men.

Licia started pondering- what is it that she can do for now?

"Damn, it's overflowing!"

"It is going to collapse."

"No, hold it up! If even one of the sack slides of, it is over for us now."

The current grew fsr more stronger than they had estimated and the sacks that they had managed to stack weren't enough to hold back the water. The water was colliding with the barrier, threathening to collapse the wall anytime soon.

The men used all their strength to hold the sacks in it's place and prevent it from falling. Even the one who were filling the sacks rushed over to hold back the sacks.

"Hold it!"

"Hold on… Please."

Suddenly, they heard water breaking in through more leaks in the barrier and the sacks slipping off from the top. Their eyes spread open and their face as they looked at the sack about to fall on them. "It's falling…" The men screamed and closed their eyes but could not feel the pain they were expecting from the sacks falling on them.

They opened their eyes to see that Alpha Enrique has pounced in between and was holding back the sacks which were about to collapse.

"A- Alpha?"

"Don't worry! Sitting back and watching isn't really my thing." The man said as he forced the sack back into the place and immediately helped them place more sacks there to stop the barrier from collapsing.

The men were shocked to see that he had actually came to help them. All the previous Alphas who have ruled them would give out orders at the best and would not even come down the river to see what the situation was. There were even many times when they would simply let the land flood and people suffer than lending a helping hand. This was their first time having an Alpha who did not treat them brutally because they were from lower rank than him and didn't shy away from helping them.
