Chapter 69

A day passed in tense silence before the letter arrived. It came without warning, slipped under the door in the dead of night, its edges crumpled as though it had been hastily delivered. I hesitated as I picked it up, the weight of it strange and foreboding in my hands. The paper was jagged, the typewritten words formed from clipped newspaper letters, something about the presentation felt wrong, like a warning.

I opened it carefully, my fingers trembling as I unfolded the paper. The words were written in bold, unsettling letters, their sharp contrast searing through me.

"You can't hide forever."

The silence in the room was deafening as my eyes traced the message over and over. My pulse quickened, and a cold sweat prickled down my spine. The letter felt like an omen, a shadow creeping closer.

Mother, who had been in the kitchen, appeared in the doorway. Her face went pale as she read over my shoulder. I could feel her anxiety radiating off her, but she was careful not to show it too openly.

"This... this is bad," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Her eyes flickered at the window, as if expecting someone to appear.

The words on the paper were like a match for dry tinder. The calm we had settled into shattered in an instant. Chaos erupted in the house. Mother began pacing, muttering under her breath, while I stood frozen, the weight of the message sinking into my bones.

I felt it then, a sudden, sharp awareness. Our safety, our sanctuary, was no longer ours to claim. Someone, or something, was coming, and there was no escaping it.

My hands trembled uncontrollably as I stared at the letter in front of me. The words etched on the page sent a chill down my spine: "You can't hide forever."

Who sent this? What did they mean?

Since taking over Zendaya's body and identity, my life has been anything but smooth. I discovered that she and my former sister were bitter enemies, and that Zendaya had almost died at her hands, a score I haven't yet had the chance to settle.

Kidnapped, assaulted, and nearly killed, all because of another woman's jealousy. And now this; a cryptic, ominous letter delivered to my doorstep.

How many enemies does Zendaya have? Or rather, how many of her enemies have now become mine?

She always seemed so peaceful, so carefree. But appearances can be deceiving. What had she done, or who had she crossed to earn such relentless hostility?

Was this because of Rome? Were his enemies targeting me now, knowing I was the easier prey?

My knees felt weak, barely able to hold me upright. The room tilted for a moment, the weight of everything pressing down on me, suffocating. I was about to collapse when I heard footsteps approach.

Before I could react, a pair of warm hands wrapped around me, pulling me into a firm embrace.

"Why didn't you call me?"

The deep, familiar voice filled my ears, grounding me for the first time since the chaos began.

Rome was here.

"I... I couldn't think properly," I stammered, reaching out instinctively to touch his hands. His warmth steadied me, even as my mind raced.

He sighed, his grip firm but not forceful. "I thought you'd be safe here. But I guess I was wrong." His voice softened as he added, "You'll have to stay with me now."

Stay with him? At the pack house?

I had never lived there, though I'd spent countless hours working within its walls. The idea of moving in felt... unsettling. But what choice did I have? Refusing his offer would mean staying there, vulnerable and exposed, waiting for whoever sent that letter to strike again.

The thought made my stomach churn. Someone had already breached the security of my home, reaching my door undetected. I wasn't safe here, no matter how much I wanted to believe otherwise.

Rome's presence offered a glimmer of reassurance, but his words also carried the weight of inevitability.

"I'll adjust," I whispered, more to myself than to him. There was no other option.

"I’ll ask your butler to help pack your things and have them sent to the Pack house," Rome said, his tone calm but firm. "I have a meeting in ten minutes, but I’ll Skype them from here. I don’t want to leave you alone. Is that okay?"

How could a man be so perfect?

I had lived two lives, endured two entirely different existences, and yet this man continued to surprise me every time he spoke. He wasn’t just protective, he was thoughtful, considerate in ways I hadn’t thought possible.

"You can use my laptop," I offered, eager to make things easier for him.

He shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. "No need. Marcellus is waiting in the car. I’ll just ask him to bring mine."

"Then I’ll make you some coffee," I said quickly, not waiting for an answer before heading to the kitchen.

The truth was, I needed a moment to myself. The way Rome cared for me, his unflinching presence and unwavering support, was overwhelming in the best way. But it also reminded me how fragile my world had become. As I filled the kettle and watched the water begin to boil, I realized I wasn’t just making coffee for him.

I was trying to regain control of something, anything, in a life that seemed to keep slipping through my fingers.

But has my life ever truly been in my control?

When I returned, I found Rome seated at my desk, his laptop open, speaking in that authoritative tone that left no room for argument. His meeting had started. Quietly, I walked over and placed the coffee cup next to his hand.

"Thank you, my Luna," he said without breaking his stride.

For a moment, I thought I’d misheard him. Did he just say Luna? My heart skipped a beat, the weight of that single word sinking in. Was he acknowledging me, claiming me, in front of everyone at the meeting?

"You’re welcome," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sound of his conversation.

I moved to my bed, positioning myself, so I had a clear view of him. The way he carried himself, majestic and commanding, there was no mistaking him for anything less than the Alpha King. His presence filled the room, effortlessly drawing attention, even when he wasn’t speaking.

Rome spent most of the meeting listening, letting others voice their concerns and ideas. When he did speak, it was brief but decisive, his confidence in them evident. He wasn’t the kind of leader who micromanaged; he trusted his people to handle things, which made his rare words all the more powerful.

Then, his voice shifted, cutting through the dialogue with purpose.

"Ah, I have an announcement," he said, his tone calm yet commanding.

I tried not to react, keeping my expression neutral, but there was no way to avoid overhearing him, not when we were in the same room.

"My Luna will start living in the Pack house. You are all required to avail yourselves in two days for her crowning ceremony."

My breath hitched. Crowning ceremony? He wasn’t just claiming me privately, he was making it official, binding me to him in a way that left no room for doubt.

A mixture of emotions surged through me; shock, pride, and a nervous anticipation that made my chest tighten. I’d never imagined my life would come to this moment, this point where someone like Rome would not only choose me but publicly declare it.

Yet here we were.
