Chapter 59

Third person's POV

"Well, I didn't see that coming," Nemesis chuckled, her voice resonating through the space. Selene heard Nemesis before she saw her, and it made her roll her eyes. Why does she always appear uninvited to her territory?

As the Moon Goddess, Selene spent much of her time alone, a solitary guardian of the night and the mother of wolves. She found solace in the tranquility of the moonlit skies, her silver hair flowing like liquid light around her ethereal face. Her domain was one of serenity and silent strength, guiding her children-the wolves-with a gentle yet unwavering hand.

Nemesis, on the other hand, was the Goddess of Justice and Judgment. She kept vigilant tabs on humans, delivering retribution to the oppressors and justice to the oppressed. Her role was dynamic and often tumultuous, contrasting sharply with Selene's calm and measured existence. Selene admired the importance of Nemesis's work, though she would be darned before she admitted it. Although she held a certain respect for her fellow Goddess, Selene didn't see the need to inform her. After all, they were not friends, merely acquaintances.

"You are here," Selene spoke, acknowledging Nemesis's presence.

Nemesis appeared in a golden light that could blind a mortal, her arrival as dramatic as her personality. Instead of her usual imposing attire, she wore a simple golden dress, a peculiar choice for the fierce enforcer of divine justice. Her eyes, usually filled with the stern authority of her duties, held a spark of amusement as she regarded Selene.

"Yes, I am," Nemesis responded, her voice carrying a hint of mischief. "And it seems I've caught you by surprise."

Selene chuckled but walked towards Nemesis. They were in her field, surrounded by an array of flowers that swayed gently in the cool breeze. The air was fragrant, filled with the sweet scent of blossoms. They stood in silence, each lost in their thoughts, weighed down by their concerns about a certain human.

Their thoughts centered on the human upon whom they had placed their bets: Semira, now reincarnated as Zendaya. The bet itself was insignificant compared to the progress of the human involved. Something was wrong, and they both felt it.

Selene had bet that Semira, upon meeting her mate, would forget her desire for revenge and choose love over hate. She believed that the power of true love could heal Semira's wounds and guide her towards a better path. On the other hand, Nemesis had bet that Semira would choose her revenge over love. She knew Semira had never experienced love before, making it more likely that she would cling to her hatred and thirst for vengeance. Nemesis couldn't blame her; the child had endured more than her fair share of suffering, but it was her fate nonetheless.

What neither of them anticipated was that Semira's fate would change. This unforeseen twist made things a lot more interesting for the two goddesses but also left them uneasy. Their celestial wager had taken a turn neither could predict, leaving them both in a state of apprehensive curiosity.

"Do you think we meddled too much?" Selene asked, breaking the silence, her voice soft and reflective.

Nemesis sighed, her eyes scanning the field of flowers. "Perhaps. But isn't that what we do? We test, we judge, we guide. It's the nature of our existence."

Selene nodded in agreement. "Would you like some tea?" she asked.

"Sure, when will I get the chance to drink tea with you?" teased Nemesis.

They walked to a gazebo nestled amidst the flowers. Selene poured hot tea into delicate cups, and they both drank in silence, each lost in their thoughts. The tranquility of the garden contrasted sharply with the turmoil in their minds.

With a sigh, Selene spoke again, "Why do I feel like there's so much about that human's fate we don't know about?"

Nemesis shared the same worry and had been pondering the possibilities for a while. "Aren't you supposed to know the fate of your precious children?" she asked.

Selene's expression grew contemplative. "I usually do. But Semira's-Zendaya's- seems...clouded. There are forces at play that I can't fully see."

Nemesis took a sip of her tea, her eyes narrowing thoughtfully. "It's unsettling. She's not just any human. Her soul carries the weight of her past, and her future is entangled with powers beyond our usual influence."

Selene's gaze dropped to her cup, watching the steam rise and swirl. "Do you think we underestimated the impact of her reincarnation? That maybe her new life has altered her destiny and others in ways we couldn't predict?"

Nemesis leaned back, considering Selene's words. "It's possible. Fate is not always as linear as we perceive it. Her reincarnation might have created new threads in the tapestry, weaving connections and challenges we didn't foresee."

Selene sighed again, a mixture of concern and resignation in her voice. "I just hope whatever happens, she finds her way. Whether it's through love or revenge, I hope she finds her peace."

Nemesis's expression softened slightly, a rare glimpse of empathy. "Peace is a luxury not everyone gets, especially those like her. But maybe, just maybe, she'll find a way to carve it out for herself."

The two goddesses continued to sip their tea, the weight of their divine wager pressing heavily upon them. The fate of Semira, now Zendaya, was a mystery yet to unfold, and with it, the true test of their celestial influence.

"Something in her has changed for sure, and I'm worried about how it will affect those around her. There's a darkness in her that wasn't there before," said Selene, her voice tinged with concern.

"Selene, all humans have darkness inside them," Nemesis replied thoughtfully. "What they choose to do with it is all that matters. They are like coins with two sides, and sometimes one side takes over the other completely. She is resilient, she will be fine."

Selene raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "I have never heard you compliment anyone before."

Nemesis chuckled softly. "I haven't met someone like her before."

Selene's gaze softened as she considered Nemesis's words. "You see potential in her, then?"

Nemesis nodded. "I see a strength that goes beyond her circumstances. She has endured more than most, and yet she continues to fight. That kind of resilience is rare."

Selene sighed, a mix of hope and worry in her eyes. "I just hope that her darkness doesn't consume her. She's been through so much already."

Nemesis reached out and placed a reassuring hand on Selene's. "Have faith in her, Selene. Sometimes, it's the darkness that helps us see the light. She will find her way."

The two goddesses sat in companionable silence, the weight of their thoughts hanging between them. They were bound by their concern for Zendaya, a human whose fate was intricately woven with their own divine purposes. As they sipped their tea, the future remained uncertain, they both held onto a glimmer of hope that Zendaya's resilience would see her through the trials ahead.

"Maybe we are not so different after all," the two goddesses thought about each other.

Selene and Nemesis, despite their contrasting domains-Selene as the Moon Goddess, the mother of wolves, and Nemesis as the Goddess of Justice and Judgment-found a surprising kinship in their mutual concern for the fate of one human. Their shared worries and hopes for Zendaya's future had brought them to a rare moment of understanding.

Selene glanced at Nemesis, her usual serene demeanor giving way to a softer expression. She realized that beneath Nemesis's stern exterior lay a deep sense of duty and compassion, traits she herself valued highly.

Nemesis, in turn, saw in Selene a kindred spirit-someone who cared deeply for her charges and who grappled with the complexities of fate and free will. It was a side of Selene she hadn't fully appreciated before.

In that quiet moment, surrounded by the tranquility of Selene's garden, they both acknowledged the unexpected bond forming between them. It was a reminder that even in their divine roles, they shared the same ultimate goal: to guide and protect those under their care.
