The midwife

Hilda, are you ok? Do you still have an issue with Silas’? Genni tried to sound as sympathetic as she could but it had no effect other than to make tears well up in Hilda’s eyes and ask if she may leave. ‘No, not yet. Please follow me to my office. Molly, Sara if you will’ the two women rose and followed their Luna to the stairs waiting. Clasping Jonas’s hand quickly she bade him goodbye for now and nodding her head in turn to the others left closing the door behind her. Genni and the other two women waiting patiently for Hilda to walk across the entranceway all the while glancing at the door. Almost longingly, catching on Genni linked with Silas and told him to come to the pack house to wait for Hilda. Hearing his response so quickly in her mind she realised that he was stressed to be away from his mate. Speaking softly now to Hilda as they all ascended the stairs to the third floor Genni asked how things really were with Silas ‘Your Grace, its going ok I guess, you heard him apologise when I was in the hospital and he has done so since that day. Sometimes more than five times a day. I have forgiven him for what he said for I understood the strain he was under. He was on enemy territory and as you had stopped him from shifting he felt threatened and as with any animal when they are cornered they lash out…..’ Hilda stopped talking then and looked at Genni from under her eyelashes. Genni could tell she wanted to say more but to less people perhaps? That was something that Genni would have to arrange sooner rather than later. There was obviously a problem and Genni wanted to help her. As they reached the corridor that led to their home apartment Genni could see a figure standing there waiting outside her office door, she also heard Sara cuss at herself and Genni guessed correctly that Sara had forgotten to cancel the meeting with the midwife Dor Banks. Rolling her eyes at her Gamma she shook her head in a disappointed sort of shake but Sara caught the ghost of a smile play on her Luna’s face and she knew she was off the hook. Her mother on the other hand was a bit pissed at her and proceeded to tell her via the mink link. To have your mother berate you at any age was awful but having ones mother do it when you were a grown She-wolf with a Mate no less was just plain embarrassing. Genni was aware that Molly was laying into Sara. Although the lecture was a little harsh Genni didn’t interfere as she did believe that Sara needed reminding on occasion that she was a Gamma and not just here in the capacity as a best friend. Nearing the older women now Genni could see just how old she was and was surprised to see the tiredness in her eyes. The reprimand that Genni was going to give evaporated when she saw the old women bow her head in full submission, smiling softly at the midwife Genni asked her to follow her into the office. Linking with Molly she asked if Hilda could wait in her or Sara’s office whilst she dealt with Ms Banks.

Closing the door behind her Genni gestured to the seat opposite her desk. This wasn’t going to be an informal chat after all. Asking the midwife if she wanted something to drink and having a no in response Genni sat down and began straight away.

‘Ms Banks, do you know why you are here’? Enquired Genni and she wasn’t surprised when the older women shook her head. ‘Do you recall a cub by the name of Braxdon? He is a week old, maybe a bit older’? Waiting to be answered Dor Banks replied in a lofty tone that she remembered every child she delivered. ‘Yes, well’ Genni continued ‘ about 3 hours ago little Braxdon was rushed to the hospital where Dr Julia is performing life saving surgery on the infant’. Genni could hear the small gasp leave the mouth of the older person as clearly as if she had done it in her face. ‘Luna, that is truly awful for the child and his parents but I fail to see what it has to do with me’ said Dor Banks calmly. ‘Raising her eyebrows in question at the women now Genni could feel her anger rise again ‘it has everything to do with you Nurse Banks. Michelle and Michael Francs spoke to you many times since the child was born with concerns regarding his health and you brushed them off without a moments thought. I’d like an explanation for this, if I may’ said Genni very politely but irritated b the nonchalant way the midwife spoke. ‘Rushing the child to the hospital is a complete waste of time Luna, the Francs cub is just a sicky baby, some cubs are like that but like I told them he will grow out of it. Your worrying and putting your nose where it don’t belong Luna. Said the old women gruffly and Genni was so taken aback at being spoken to like that she remained speechless for a second of two. Then her anger got unleashed ‘How dare you sit in front of your Luna with such contempt in your voice and with so little compassion for the poor cub who could have died on your watch’! Genni was so upset now that there was a knock at the door and Molly rushed in before Genni could say anything ‘are you ok Your Grace she said standing by the now closed door. Nodding to her Beta Genni began explaining to Molly the predicament she now found herself in. All the while talking out loud so she could hear herself speak so she could make sure she said the right thing. ‘Nurse Banks, you are relieved of your duty as Midwife to the Luna Shadow

Pack effective immediately. I do not wish another mistake to happen with the children of this pack and I’m afraid you have lost my trust in you. Having already spoken to Dr Julia she gave me free rein to do as I believed right. You do not have to leave the pack but you will be asked to take retirement from your work as Nurse and midwife. Do I make myself clear Ms Banks’? Staring daggers at Genni Nurse Banks stood up asking if there was anything else the Luna wanted to waste her time on and having no response back the older women shuffled out of the office and Genni just stared at her incredulously. Looking totally perplex and a little bit hurt that a member of her pack could be so rude Genni looked to Molly with questioning eyes. Shrugging her shoulders and at a loss for what to say Molly stepped forward and stopped Ms Banks before she left ‘What gives you the right to speak and act like this in front of the Grand Luna? Who do you think you are’? Molly was furious now as the old women just looked at her with blank eyes. Then it hit Genni like a bolt of lighting looking at Molly and Sara she relayed to them that Ms Banks was to be stopped from leaving. Obeying their Luna Sara got up from where she was sitting and joined her mother at the door. Raising from behind her desk Genni walked slowly forward until she was standing in front of the old women. Genni had to look down upon her as she was so short ‘Ms Banks, please sit back down. I was not finished in what I was saying’. Even though you could see the midwife visibly try to leave, Genni’s power, magic, whatever you wanted to call it was stronger. So the old midwife sat back down but this time instead of sitting down opposite her Genni stood next to her and placed her hand on the older women’s shoulder. Registering the Magic that was within this women Genni push her own back at her so it surrounded her then she went to sit down ‘WHO ARE YOU! And what is your purpose here’ both Molly and Sara looked at the old women with renewed interest and watched raptly as their Luna once again dealt with forces that no Werewolf should have to deal with. Genni waited for the thing to answer her and when it did start talking Genni was not surprised to discover she had been right to trust that feeling she had earlier.
