Chapter 282 The Secret Room
Chapter 282 The Secret Room
Ella's POV
"I've been digging around in secret, but I haven't gotten far. The enemy's too well-hidden. I don't even know what they're really after. Are they after the secret our family protects? Or do they just want to wipe us out? I moved our headquarters here and beefed up security to protect the family and to draw them out."
Owen's eyes flicked between Mason and me. "I call that organization 'The Master.'"
My mind was blown.
Owen isn't 'The Master'? He's fighting against 'The Master' too?
"The letter," I said, my voice shaking as I held it up. "What about this? If 'The Master' is your enemy, why did you send orders in their name?"
"Because it was the only thing that made sense."
Owen looked at me with an intensity I couldn't grasp. "Ella, you're my only and biggest weakness. As long as you're out there, you'll always be the best weapon they can use against me. I had to bring you back, keep you safe, and make sure no one knows you're here or how important you are to me."
He took a deep breath, like he was making a huge decision.
"So, I turned their plan on its head. I got wind of an attack on the SilenceSpace Pack. I faked that letter, giving the order to capture you alive in 'The Master's' name. It was the only way I could think of to get you out of the chaos and keep you safe."
His voice was full of genuine emotion, and his explanation seemed perfect, connecting all the dots into a new, shocking story.
In this story, he wasn't a conspirator or an enemy but a lonely guardian forced to work in the shadows to protect his sister and the entire Pack.
I was stunned, the documents and the letter in my hands feeling as heavy as a ton of bricks.
I looked at the letter, then at the death list, and finally at Owen's face, etched with exhaustion and sincerity. My mind was a mess. I didn't know what to believe or doubt.
I felt like I was drowning, struggling in a sea of truth and lies, about to suffocate. Instinctively, I clung to Mason, my lifeline, my only support.
"Mason," I looked up at him, my eyes filled with helplessness and pleading.
I needed him, his judgment, his rationality to tell me if this was the truth or just a more sophisticated, terrifying lie.
Mason didn't speak. He just quietly observed Owen, scrutinizing every expression and word. After a long while, he finally spoke, his voice flat and emotionless.
"Do you have any solid proof of this 'Master' organization, besides this death list?" Mason asked, his voice steady.
Owen met his gaze calmly and nodded. "I do."
He continued, "That's why I'm glad you found me so quickly. I can't keep this up alone. I need allies. Strong enough to help me drag these rats out of the shadows."
He walked to the far end of the study, where a large painting of a forest hung on the wall. He pressed a spot on the frame.
With a faint mechanical sound, the wall with the painting slid aside, revealing a hidden, deep chamber.
A cold, musty air wafted out from the chamber.
"All the evidence, everything I've gathered over the years, is in there." Owen turned to us, his face showing an unprecedented seriousness.
"Alpha Mason, Ella," he said each word deliberately, "will you believe me now and join me in uncovering this damned truth?"
I felt like I was being pulled into a bottomless vortex. Every word Owen said shattered my previous understanding and tried to reshape it.
A secret chamber? Evidence? Allies?
Mason's arm was still tightly around my waist, supporting my shaky body and mind.
Owen had turned to face the large forest painting.
His movements were unhurried, as if performing a routine task. Yet, when the wall slid open with a faint mechanical sound, revealing a dark entrance, I couldn't help but gasp.
Beyond the entrance was a descending stone staircase. Deep, silent, as if leading to an unknown underground world.
A cold, musty smell, mixed with a hint of dust and ink, wafted out, filling the study.
The smell wasn't unpleasant but carried a suffocating sense of oppression, as if countless heavy secrets were sealed inside.
"All the evidence, everything I've gathered over the years, is in there."
Owen's voice echoed slightly in the empty study. His face showed a seriousness and gravity I had never seen before. His eyes, once filled with gentle smiles, were now as deep as the entrance to the chamber, unfathomable.
"Alpha Mason, Ella," he said each word carefully, "will you believe me now and join me in uncovering this damned truth?"
His gaze swept over me and finally landed on Mason, filled with a desperate hope.
I instinctively tightened my grip on Mason's arm.
Go or not? Believe or not? My mind was blank, unable to think. I could only rely on Mason, who remained calm and strong no matter the danger.
