Chapter 20 A Promise Kept
Christopher closed the door behind them. The lock clicked softly, the sound carrying through the quiet apartment. Kai didn’t move at first, simply stood there near the entryway, watching him as he slipped out of his jacket and set it aside like this was any other night. She leaned back against the wall, arms loosely crossed, eyes bright with amusement. The faint light from the hall framed her face, catching the slow curve of her smile
“So,” she said lightly, breaking the silence. “Is this where you make it up to me?”
Christopher paused. He turned to face her, and for a moment neither of them spoke. He hadn’t forgotten the promise. It had sat at the back of his mind since the moment he’d said it. He stepped closer, stopping just short of touching her. His presence alone pressed into her space.
“I told you I would,” he said.
Kai’s smile deepened, satisfaction flickering behind her eyes. “You also did say anything I want.”
A muscle in his jaw tightened. He stepped closer, stopping just short of touching her. His presence filled the space easily, familiar and steady.
“You never waste an opportunity.”
“Why should I?” she replied lightly. “You were the one who needed convincing.”
Her hand lifted, fingers brushing the front of his shirt, tracing downward as though she had all the time in the world. She leaned in, closing the distance, and kissed him before he could respond.
The kiss was unhurried. It was slow and intentional, a kiss meant to remind him that this wasn’t impulse. This was payment. Christopher’s hand came to her waist, grip firm, grounding himself. He kissed her back, heat building beneath restraint. Kai felt it, the tension under his control, and smiled against his mouth.
She pulled back just enough to speak. “You’re still holding yourself back.”
“I’m not,” he replied.
She raised a brow. “You are.”
Her fingers curled into his collar, tugging him closer. “I didn’t ask for restraint, Christy. I asked for you to please me. Just like you promised in exchange for withdrawing my plan in challenging my adorable sister.”
That broke something loose.
He kissed her again, deeper this time, and guided her backward until the edge of the bed pressed against her legs. Kai went willingly, laughing softly as she fell back, pulling him with her.
The room was dim, lit only by moonlight slipping through the window. This was Christopher’s space, orderly and controlled, everything in its place. Kai disrupted it just by being there.
He hovered over her briefly, eyes searching her face, something unreadable passing through him.
“You knew exactly what you were doing,” he said quietly.
She reached up, fingers brushing his throat. “Of course I did.”
“You knew I couldn’t say no.”
“You could have,” she replied easily. “You just didn’t want to because I know you also want this, right?”
The truth settled between them without needing to be spoken again. They moved together without urgency, heat building slowly. Clothes were discarded without ceremony, the focus not on haste but on intention. Kai guided him as much as he guided her, every touch deliberate, every breath shared.
The bed shifted beneath them as Christopher finally let go of control.
The quiet apartment filled with sound. Soft at first, then less restrained. Kai’s breath caught as she arched closer, a low moan slipping free before she could stop it.
"Oh, Christy..." Kai moaned.
Christopher buried his face against her shoulder, his own breath uneven, a quiet sound torn from his chest as he moved with her.
There was nothing tentative about it now.
They came together fully, heat and motion blurring into something instinctive and consuming. Kai clung to him, nails pressing into his back as her voice broke softly against his skin. Christopher answered her without words, the rhythm between them steady and unrelenting, the bed creaking faintly beneath the force of it.
The sounds they made were unguarded. Easily heard in the stillness of the night.
Time lost its meaning.
When it finally slowed, it did so reluctantly. Christopher stayed close, his forehead resting against hers, breath still uneven. Kai’s fingers remained curled into his shoulder as if she hadn’t quite decided to let go yet.
Eventually, they collapsed together, bodies warm, tangled in sheets and silence.
Kai shifted first, settling against his chest, her cheek pressed to his skin. Christopher’s arm came around her without thought, holding her there as his breathing steadied.
For a while, neither of them spoke. Outside, the moonlight slipped quietly across the room. Kai traced a lazy line along his side, her voice soft, satisfied. “You kept your promise.”
Christopher stared at the ceiling, aware of the weight of her words. “I did.”
“And you’ll keep doing it,” she added lightly, already certain.
He didn’t answer.
They lay there together, the aftermath heavy and intimate, knowing whatever line they had crossed tonight could not be undone.
When the tension finally eased, the world beyond the apartment felt distant and unreal. They lay tangled in the sheets, bodies warm, the quiet hum of the night pressing in around them.
Kai rested her head against his shoulder, fingers tracing idle patterns across his chest. Christopher stared at the ceiling, breathing steady, aware of the weight of what had just passed between them.
“You were quiet during the Rite,” Kai said softly.
“I was thinking.”
“That’s rarely a good sign.”
He let out a quiet breath of a laugh. “About dominance. About how easily people confuse force with power.”
“And what did you decide?”
“That control wins.”
Kai smiled, pleased. “It always does.”
Silence settled again, comfortable but heavy. Outside, the moon climbed higher, its pale light slipping across the floor.
“Selene’s changing,” Kai said suddenly.
Christopher didn’t answer right away. “She always has been.”
“She’s watching more,” Kai continued. “Reacting less. She’s learning.”
“Like you.”
Her smile returned, slow and knowing. “You don’t sound afraid.”
“I’m not,” he said. “I worry about what people will do when they realize what she’s capable of.”
Kai shifted, lifting her head to look at him. “And me?”
He met her gaze. “You don’t need protection.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
He hesitated, then nodded once. “Yes.”
The answer satisfied her. She relaxed again, curling closer, one leg draped over his.
“Good,” she murmured.
They lay there for a while, the promise fulfilled but far from resolved. The air between them felt charged, not with urgency now, but with consequence.
Kai traced a slow line across his chest. “You know this doesn’t end here.”
“I know.”
“You’ll owe me again.”
He closed his eyes briefly. “You enjoy collecting debts.”
“I enjoy knowing when I have the upper hand.”
Christopher didn’t argue. He knew better.
Kai yawned softly, the tension finally easing from her body. She settled more comfortably against him, eyes drifting closed.
“You did please me and I must say, I am more than satisfied tonight,” she said quietly.
He didn’t answer. He knew promises like his never truly ended. They only shifted, waiting for the next moment to be called in.
Outside, the moon watched in silence.
And somewhere across campus, the Bloodbound Rite prepared for its next trial.
