Chapter 14 Fight
“What should we do?” Selene asked quietly, her voice calm despite the tension tightening her chest.
Her wolf didn’t answer with words. Instead, instinct surged through her veins.
“Stand your ground.” She said to herself.
Selene lifted her head, forcing her posture tall and proud. She refused to back away. Her silver coat caught the moonlight even more brightly as she held their gazes, daring them to make the first move. Fear clawed at her, but she locked it away. Showing weakness now would invite death.
The rogues circled tighter. Leaves crunched beneath their paws. One stepped forward, lips pulling back to reveal stained fangs, saliva dripping onto the forest floor. Another growled, deep and hungry, the sound echoing against the cliff behind Selene. They thought she was alone. They thought her beauty made her weak.
They were wrong.
Just as the nearest rogue lunged, the night exploded with movement.
A massive shadow burst from the treeline, fast and deadly. A huge black wolf slammed into the rogue mid-air, sending him crashing into the dirt with a sickening crack. The wolf that emerged was unlike any Selene had ever seen. His fur was pitch black, thick and powerful, absorbing the moonlight instead of reflecting it. His body was broad and muscular, built for dominance and war. Every step he took radiated authority.
Alpha energy rolled off him like heat.
“That’s not Christopher’s wolf, that is way bigger than his..”
The air itself seemed to shift under his presence. The remaining rogues froze for a heartbeat, startled by the sudden intrusion. The black wolf snarled, a deep, commanding sound that shook the ground beneath Selene’s paws. His eyes burned with intensity..
Without hesitation, he attacked again.
He moved with brutal precision, tearing into one rogue before it could react. Bones cracked. Blood splattered dark against the silver-lit forest floor. Selene barely had time to process what she was seeing before instinct took over.
The black wolf glanced back at her and gave a sharp nod. It was an unspoken signal to fight together with him.
Selene didn’t hesitate.
She launched herself at the nearest rogue, her silver form a streak of light. Her fangs sank into its shoulder as she twisted, using her weight and momentum to bring it down. Her wolf roared with exhilaration as claws met flesh. This wasn’t fear anymore, it was survival.
The black wolf was everywhere at once, moving with terrifying speed. He tore through the rogues like a storm, his strength overwhelming, his presence crushing. Selene noticed how the others faltered whenever he faced them head-on, how their confidence crumbled under his dominance.
Still, she had no idea who he was.
Only that he was powerful. Dangerous. And unmistakably an Alpha but that would be impossible. She knows that Christopher is not around, he is too busy handling his affairs to even bother going in this forest.
Selene and the black rouge fought side by side, seamless despite never having trained together. Selene took down one rogue with a swift bite to the throat, then spun to assist the black wolf as another lunged at his flank. Her claws raked across its side, and the Alpha finished it with a single, brutal strike.
Moments later, the forest fell silent.
Five rogue wolves lay motionless on the ground, blood darkening the soil beneath them. Selene stood there, chest heaving, silver fur stained but proud. The black wolf stood a short distance away, his form tense, alert, eyes scanning the darkness.
Then a sound of footsteps and the distant echo of howls could be heard inside the forest.
Selene’s ears flicked toward the noise. She recognized it instantly—the Delta and the warriors. They were coming fast.
The black wolf stiffened. He looked at Selene one last time, his gaze lingering as if committing her image to memory. There was something unreadable in his eyes—relief, maybe, or something deeper.
Before Selene could react, he turned.
With one powerful leap, he vanished into the forest, his black form swallowed by shadows.
“Wait—” Selene started, but it was too late.
She stared at the place where he disappeared, her heart pounding for a reason she didn’t fully understand. The forest felt emptier without him, quieter, as if the night itself had taken a breath.
The sound of approaching wolves grew louder.
Moments later, the Delta burst into the clearing with a squad of warriors behind him. They froze at the sight before them.
Five dead rogues and then they saw her.
“Selene?” the Delta said, disbelief clear in his voice. “What—what are you doing here?”
Selene stood still, her silver fur glowing beneath the moon, surrounded by the aftermath of the fight. Her gaze moved slowly from the fallen rogues to the dark path where the black wolf had vanished. Her heart was still pounding, her mind crowded with questions she couldn’t yet answer.
She didn’t know who he was.
“Delta…” Her voice trembled as she spoke.
The Delta was already at her side. “Are you hurt?” he asked urgently, circling her, his sharp eyes checking for wounds. “Why are you here? Are you okay?”
Selene exhaled and let her wolf retreat. Her form shifted back to human, and the cool night air brushed against her skin. Only then did she realize how much blood covered her. It streaked across her arms, staining her clothes, drying along her hands. She stared at them for a moment, surprised by the sight.
“I’m fine,” she said quietly, taking a steadying breath. “None of it is mine.”
The Delta studied her face, searching for any sign of pain or weakness. “You’re sure?” he pressed. “Five rogues don’t just fall like this without a fight.”
She nodded. “I’m sure.”
He turned sharply and motioned to one of the warriors. “Go to the main hall. Inform the Alpha about what happened here. Tell him we found Selene and five dead rogues near the cliff.” The wolf didn’t hesitate and took off at once, disappearing into the forest.
The Delta faced her again, his tone softer now. “Why weren’t you with the Alpha?” he asked. “It’s dangerous to be alone at night.”
Selene lowered her hands and met his gaze. “I went to the market earlier,” she answered. “My aunt asked me to sell the vegetables from her garden. I stayed longer than I planned.”
His brows furrowed. “And you came back alone?”
“Yes,” she replied. “I didn’t think—”
He raised a hand gently, stopping her. “We’ll talk about that later.” His voice became more formal. “We need to go to the main hall. There has to be an investigation, and you’ll need to be questioned. It won’t take long, but your account is important.”
Selene nodded, though her thoughts were still elsewhere. On the black wolf and on the way he had vanished without a word.
They hadn’t gone far when the sound of hurried footsteps approached. Another wolf emerged from the shadows, shifting into human form as he reached them.
“Delta,” he said, slightly out of breath. “Alpha is on his way.”
Selene looked up at the mention of his name, her grip tightening slightly at her side as the weight of the night finally began to settle in.
